Could conflict between China and the West be avoided if the Taiwanese people, for those so inclined, were allowed to migrate on mass to Australia and possibly other countries? After all, Australia needs to grow its population for developmental reasons.
I support the One-China policy and recognise that some Taiwanese are happy to accept mainland rule while others are not. For those that are not, they should have the option of leaving Taiwan for Australia, or somewhere else, especially if that will help prevent conflict between China and the West.
The US will not defend Taiwan because it supports the One China policy which means it recognises the territory of the former as being an indivisible part of China. This means the US believes that China is not committing an act of aggression against an independent or foreign nation by asserting its authority over the island.
So, the question becomes, what chance have the Taiwanese got in a fight against its vastly larger and better armed neighbour? The outcome is obvious and so it is really a matter of saving as many lives as possible that is the real issue here. That can be achieved by allowing those who do not wish to live under the rule of the Communist Party to leave and become citizens of some other democracy, such as Australia.
Upholding Chinese sovereignty does not have to result in a massive loss of life on both sides of the Taiwan Strait in a military conflict that would also result in significant material destruction and environmental damage to both sides, and to any other nations choosing to involve themselves.
A peaceful outcome that is in line with the beliefs of the democracies of this world concerning the sanctity of human life can be achieved in a manner consistent with allowing the democratic aspirations of the Taiwanese to live on, all be it, in another country or countries who are similarly committed to the same way of life.
There does not have to be armed conflict between the West and China. There is another way to resolve the Taiwanese matter.
Does Australia have to emigrate when China wants to get Australia’s territory? China wants islands in the Pacific, and people from these islands have to emigrate? it’s ridiculous.

Buddy, the Nationalists lost the Civil War explicitly because they refused to fight the Japanese and horded all the weapons and supplies the US sent to them in hopes to use them against the communists after the war with Japan was concluded.
Even then, 8 out of 10 Japanese soldiers who died in WWII were killed in China, not in those Islands the US fought the Japanese over in the Pacific.

Some of the largest battles in WWII were fought in China. I am talking about huge large battles with millions of men on both sides involved.
After the WWII in the later stages of the Civil War the Nationalists outnumbered the Communists 3 to 1 in almost everything. The US flooded the Nationalists with ammunition, tanks, warplanes x heavy artillery. The US had thousands and thousands of Military advisors embedded in the Nationalist army. The Nationalists had 3 men for every 1 men the Communists had. Yet in the end the Nationalists still lost battle after battle, city ager city, province after province to the communists.
Why?
Because the Chinese people rejected the vision that the Nationalists had for China.
The Chinese people embraced communism because they saw it as a liberation ideology against Western Imperialism and oppression of China and the Chinese people.
They did this after enduring 100 years of Brutal Western and Japanese Imperialist aggression, crimes and invasions of China.
So much efforts for making sure others have no freedom to choose their own destiny.

Guys, please do not assume China will act like the UK or the US with hegemony or colonial ambitions. Throughout the history of China, neighboring countries have tried to invade it many times for its rich resources. China is always busy defending its territories. Besides, all Chinese customs, languages, cuisines, practices and thousand years of philosophies are way too complicated for other countries to adopt so they do not bother to export them let alone forcing them on other countries far away.

@Andy .P It is very easy to work out in math. According to world bank, china’s gdp per capital (ppp) is $17211 and US $63207 in 2020. Assuming china can grow by 5% per year and US grow 2% per year, it will take around 21 years for china to be half of US. By then, the overall GDP of china is going to be double of the US cos china’s population is 4 times of the US. 21 years from 2020 is 2041. I believe china will start negotiation with taiwanese government about reunification. It will take about 8 years to reach an agreement. Therefore, by 2049 which is 100year anniversary of PRC, Taiwan will return to China peacefully. Exciting, right?! lol

If a conflict breaks out, who will initiate the conflict? Obviously, it will be the mainland. For over 30 years, Taiwan spent less then one and a half percent of its GDP on defense.
