Cell phone video captured the moments when sparks and debris can be seen shooting from a United Airlines flight after departing from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. The plane, which was headed to Brazil, safely landed after 90 minutes to burn fuel. WNBC’s Adam Kuperstein reports.

They were ALL thankful they didn’t reach Brazil
Thank god everybody returned to the ground safely.
Or you could thank the pilots..
fellow aviation photographers unite!
This is fine. Everyone relax and enjoy the flight.
He said I was excited. Smh
🙌🏻🙏🏻
You drove in a circle for a hour and half, and then got a different plane the next day? Pats on the back for everyone.
It could be a compressor stall but usually compressor stalls don’t look like that.
Just makes us ask if those engines are fixed or not. 777-200 were the other 2 engine failures for United
As a pilot protocol should be land asap so due to overweight I would have dumped the fuel instead of flying to burn it off especially how far they were from the coast
nah he did not just say seven seventy seven just call it a triple seven 😭
Thank God the plane landed safely.
Or the pilot?
Dam the guy was high as fawk when filming
Such a drama queen
Even with the sparks that plane was safer than driving on the highway.
Thank the sweet baby Jesus for the safe return of all the souls aboard
Wow! I saw something similar to this Tuesday night on 9/20/22 approximately 9:10 PM in Houston looking west out my back porch over the lake. It freaked me out..The only difference was no fireballs were falling and the stream of fire was less fragmented..Also, I didn’t see the plane. Just the fire..I don’t really believe in UFOs but I’ve been less skeptical lately since I saw this phenomenon in the sky. Nothing on the news about it at all yet .It’s been a few days and I still haven’t heard anything about it from other residents in my area either..
My friend claims he saw this, he told me when I got back from work. But its strange since we are in the southern hemisphere in Botswana Africa. He described it as you say and I dismissed him since he said its a star that fell from the sky🤣
So whats cause it? Bird? This is “brand new” plane
Hydraulic pump failure.
This “brand new plane” you speak of is 26 years old 🤦♂️
Nothing to see here folks !!!
Circling in the Atlantic for 90 mins? They should’ve just went to the destination.
With a serious problem?
Flairs
Why circle so long? If it’s an emergency, the plane will fall to the ground.
That’s not how any of this works
send them to Martha vineyard
Doesn’t a 777 have fuel dumping capabilities?
Yes, and it used them
@JayJay Aviation In the video they just said “burned fuel”.
@Gabriel Shapiro They’re wrong. The media is wrong about aviation quite often
@JayJay Aviation Agreed.
Azerbaijan, with Turkish and Israeli support, launched an unprovoked invasion last week into internationally recognized Armenian territory, killing over 300 innocent Armenian soldiers and civilians, displacing tens of thousands and occupying land. The bodies of 5 Armenian women have been brutally mutilated. Why is NBC News saying nothing on the truth and condemning the Azeris and Ilham Aliyev, the Vladimir Putin of Azerbaijan? And when will the United States finally sanction and cut assistance to Azerbaijan, Turkey and Israel for killing Armenian lives and fragrantly violating international law?
Imagine circling for 90m just to go back home
would be cool if i was able to catch all that fuel, nd use it for my car.
To the ‘photographer’: If you ever catch something like this on camera again, next time, how about not screaming like a complete imbecile? It makes otherwise riveting imagery unbearable to watch without muting the volume.
Teamwork at work to get the plane down safely
Smoke in the air. Smoke in da air!
Yea
Imagine being a passenger on that plane and being told you’re returning to the terminal because of a mechanical issue, but you have to circle around the airport for 90 minutes with that same mechanical issue before you can land. I know why they do it, but it would freak me out.
Right 🤣🤣🤣
@Unicorn Gas well technically it´s not worse, since crash landing on water is way better than crash landing on land.
@Ken Bob Commercial planes can Dump fuel with a switch in the cockpit. That plane was fully fueled to go from Newark to San Paulo Brazil which is a 8 hour flight, so it would take longer to dump fuel then 90 mins which they would’ve never made it the 8 hour journey with just 90mins of fuel unless you dumped it which you can with a switch that the pilots use to Dump fuel.
@Rage_Scorpio that man needs to be given an award and an accommodation he saved hundreds of lives just imagine what would have happened had he not noticed
@S Chao not all airliners can dump fuel.
An aviation photographer that shoots in portrait mode? Very suspect of his credentials.
Those baggage fees going to the executives instead of maintenance
I’m sure he can articulate words instead of yelling like Tarzan. It could have went like this”. Viewers as you can see from the video it appears to be a mechanical issue with the plane”. But rather we all heard OOOOOOOO!!!!OOOOOOOO!!! Really!!!
Praise Jesus you made it down safely…I went down years ago on emergency landing in Uganda …I believe the Lord gave me a chance to accept Him as my Savior who died on the cross for my sins and ressurected..Only way to Heaven!!!!
🤦♂️
hes a true Aviation geek. like me 😌
Probably loaded down with too much aluminum oxide and baby blood, along with other things….
What
@JayJay Aviation what ?
@Rudy Ferrell what are you talking about
@JayJay Aviation if you don’t know it shows that you get your information from the mainstream media and have zero idea about what’s really going on in this world. Go get your jab bud, it’s gonna be o.k.
Imagine being in there circling for 90 minutes. That’s insanity and scary
@Amber Sampson Guess you are an impatient Karen. If there was a disaster, and jounalist discovered that the piliot was to blame for not following protocol during an emergency, you would be the one asking “Why couldnt they release some of the fuel before landing?”
@Amber Sampson Clueless 🤡
@Dollieglitz Even more so when official investigation confirms the journalist. For clarification, the reason of that safety procedure are:
• reduce the weight of the aircraft.
• reduce available fuel for fire to burn.
Why just to burn fuel!???
@Jen Ivette Bigham Reduce weight. For emergency situations like this, it is preferable for the aircraft to be as light as possible. That, and for less fuel to burn in case of fire. Interestingly, there is no mention of dumping, which the 777 is capable of.
1:05 “the boeing seven seventy-seven” me: cracking up XD
My guy knew the danger ⚠️
That’s definitely settling knowing I’ll be flying the same airline into Newark in a couple weeks 💀
Boeing seven seventy seven 😂
Noooooooooo 😂
Engine flameouts are *more* common than full mechanical failures, I wouldn’t want to be on a plane with either but a plane can safely fly with one engine. Trust in that several million dollar aircraft people.
Planes should have a dump fuel option lol
You could avoid 90 mins of prayers.
The 777 does
Aviation photographer? Wait..am I one? I took a picture of an airplane before…or does it have to be 2 planes? Maybe one day…
I refuse to fly anymore. Boeing is trash, and all American based airlines are trash.
and United is my preferred airline company 🥺
Alright buddy calm down
Imagine all that fuel lost and wasted. No wonder ticket prices are going up smh
The pilot was calm, they told him about a spark,he wasn’t tensed.he still had to follow due emergency procedure.i guess he definitely have told the passengers to be calm
😄 🤣 😂 who tf is screaming ugh
So wait…You cant “IMMEDIATELY” land a plane if theres a safety issue because it creates another safety issue? Try to calmly explain that one to your passengers watching sparks shoot from the engines.
Pilots have checklists they are required to follow to issolate the issue and determain apropriate action. Considering this is a suspected hydraulic faliure and all the flight contols on a 777 are hydraulicly actuated i would suspect the pilots were trying to ensure that they could maintain flight controls while they still had an altitude buffer rather than find out they would lose hydro on approach and have reduced or no control. For example if they lose one or two hydros the plane can still fly they just wont have as much control because they will loose some of their surfaces but not all of them.
Meh that’s what happens when nobody on a Southwest flight pays their ‘no sparks fee’.
he said he was excited???
Dumping fuel into the ocean more like it
The fuel evaporates well before it reaches the ground
No way I’m showing my face after screaming like that😄.
Glad no one was hurt in all seriousness though.
Never flying again…
But you drive..?
Not to burn fuel..to dump fuel.To heavy
Life is short, with United Airline it will be shorter.
Easy it hit its tail. They person is crazy for yelling
Doesn’t seem like you know aviation 🤦♂️
No external fuel dump? They could go out over the ocean and dump the fuel.
They did
@JayJay Aviation That’s over $200k worth of fuel. Ouch.
@TheCyberMantis Better then jeopardizing safety
The Pilot was Calm and Never Panicked. That’s What a Pilot is Trained For, GOOD job
Love his enthusiasm, he might’ve saved those 200+ people
This is why all passengers should be given 🪂. 90 minutes circling, wishing it was open bar time!
who is the ridiculous woman screaming in the video
It needs some speed tape
From my angle looks like they had drone 😮
Hydraulics are a HUGE piece of an airplane, but yet this flight crew staying over the Atlantic?!
Wow!!!
0:43 if you watch this vidéo in a big Tv screen. You can see sparks coming from left wing root.and not from left engine Who is above. Thèse sparks are not eject by exhaust ? ???
I thought those were heat seeking flares.
Would have loved to have heard this guy report on the Hindenburg explosion.
The next morning only one passenger went on the plane to Brazil because he felt suicidal.
People freak out for good reason but those airliners can fly with a couple engines out. It’s when the wing takes damage in hydraulic, fuel, or electrical lines are cut or damaged when you start having real issues. Even a lot of those issues over the years have had revamps on their engineering so the generators and other systems don’t malfunction. As terrifying as a plane crash is, the pilots who go over all the crashes and their issues discuss exactly how safe they really are.. I don’t wanna be struck by lightning either, but we all run that risk.. Glad this was as far as the damage went and everyone went home to their families.
It’s a 4th of July fireworks !
While some commercial aircraft has the ability to dump fuel, other’s don’t and can only fly around to burn off fuel to lighten the aircraft. In circumstances like this where the aircraft has to return to the airport shortly after takeoff, the aircraft is just too heavy to land and the aircraft’s landing gear could actually collapse under the intense weight of the plane if a landing is attempted too soon. Another factor is a heavy aircraft has to land at a faster air speed to keep airflow over the wings to prevent the plane from stalling mid air, the aircraft will likely overrun the runway, unable to brake traveling at such a high speed on the ground.
Really? Because the FAA states aircraft must be able to land 15 minuets after max weight takeoff see FAR25. Either it must have high enough max landing weight to land with the fuel load or the ability to dump fuel.
@Kyle so why didn’t this Boeing 777 just turn back and land? Why did they go circle over the ocean for an hour and a half?
@Kyle The requirement for a transport category airplane is that the landing gear must be able to absorb the energy of a landing where the vertical speed is 600 feet per minute at maximum landing weight. We are talking about a force of about 2.3 G.
The maximum landing weight is the maximum take off weigh minus a typical fuel burn for the routes the airplane is designed for. An airplane designed for long flights will have a maximum landing weight well below the maximum take off weigh. An airplane designed for short flights will have a maximum landing weight closer to the maximum take off weight.
The higher the landing weight, the heavier the landing gear and the supporting structures will have to be. Therefore, defining an unrealistic high landing weight will make the airplane unnecessarily heavy and less controllable on landing.
🙏🙏🙏
I like how they called it burning fuel😂 dumbasses. They dump the fuel. Can’t burn hours worth of fuel in 90 minutes.
I was like 9 years old when my family was about to get on a Delta flight from Sarasota to Atlanta, new years eve. The plane taxied up to the gate and as it was stopping, I saw what looked like a 1 foot flame coming out of the front gear. Like someone who messed with a lighter to make the flame really long.
I said “there’s a fire on the front” and a couple other folks saw it before it went out. We watched as they sent out mechanics with their flashlights trying to figure out what it was. Ended up cancelling the flight and putting us all up in a hotel for the night. I got to swim in the pool until like 1 am and eat shrimp it was cool.
I mean what do you expect…? The on going Global Supply Chain issues is affecting the airlines with not being able to get parts to fix their airplanes. If this problem does not get resolved, Aviation may no longer be a safe mode of transportation.
Imagine it being your first time flying and this happens 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 poor newbies
Photographer ruined a once in a lifetime shot with the yelling. Thanks a lot! 👌🏿
Why took 90 minutes circling around the Atlantic? Every second counts. Pilots should’ve landed immediately even there’s air traffic.
You realizes that it’s unsafe for an aircraft to land with the amount of fuel they had during takeoff. The weight of the remaining fuel would of put pressure on the landing gears and make them explode on touchdown. Also, losing 1 engine won’t do terrible harm to the aircraft. Planes can fly with 1 engine.
That guy he was happy he capture something like this on camera he dident think for a minute what tragedy can happend only what he can gain ! This is the real face of teenagers today! But our generation created this “media monsters”
1 engine going out will literally do nothing. The guy was just excited and shocked he saw that, as he said in the video.
Deploying flares.
All that stupid yelling, you’d think the plane was crashing right into his body. Ridiculous girly men we have now. If they’re not wearing dresses and bras, they’re screaming like little girls.
Good pilot
Im so happy nothing bad happen to that aircraft 🙏🙏🙏
I hope all preferred pronouns were used.
He might have saved over 200 lives.
Que susto!
Boeing quality
Whadda gonna do….
Thanks for filming the clip
i hate flying
Circling in the Atlantic with an issue! Wtf!!!!!
the pilot was so calm after learning about the spares
