Finland is proposing new border restrictions to prevent the country from being an easy way for Russians to reach the EU as tourists.
That is after the numbers trying to cross the border doubled following President Vladimir Putin’s partial mobilisation decree.
Al Jazeera’s @Paul Rhys reports from the Vaalimaa checkpoint in Finland, from where some Russians trying to escape the draft are being sent back.

Problem is they didn’t leave before when the war started…. because they didn’t care so long as it didn’t effect them now that it does they start to flee…. So they are only think about themselves…. As a Finn I have conflicting feelings about this. On one hand I feel really bad for this dude and others like him, I respect him he seems like a stand up guy and choosing prison over being drafted and all that. I would welcome him and others like him in Finland (or pass through Finland) gladly. But then on the other hand the arguments for closing borders are very good ones. First of all what to do when all anti-war people leave Russia and only the most pro war and also most passive and numb people only remain? It is free reign for Putin then. Russian people are the only hope for stopping Putin along with Ukrainians who are beating him on the battlefield. Also having a growing number of Russian population in any bordering nation of Russia is obviously dangerous since Putin can use that as an excuse to do his funky stuff.
Russia needs for the people opposing Putin and the war to become more organized, stronger, more active and louder. Everyone leaving the country is not helping that.
Nobody in his sane mind would protest right now in Russia: you would either go to prison or go the war.
When Finland closes its borders, the number of mobilized people is growing. I doubt that it helps Ukraine or EU.

The Russian young man that refused to fight in the war against Ukraine, even though he might be imprisoned and tortured by the Russian state, is not unlike what true Christians did in the 1st century C.E. This is what history shows regarding young men who refused to serve in the Roman army, because of what Isaiah 2 says of those who worship “the only true God”, Jehovah.(Isa 12:2, KJV; John 17:3)
At Isaiah 2, it says: “In the final part of the days (that began in 1914), the mountain of the house of Jehovah (or true worship of Jehovah) will become firmly established above the top of the mountains (or political governments now relegated to 2nd place, after people removed patriotism from themselves, placing Jehovah first), and it will be raised up above the hills (or human institutions looked “up to” for support), and to it (people of) all the nations will stream.”

As the apostle John wrote: “If anyone says, “I love God,” and yet is hating his brother (willing to go to war and kill him), he is a liar. For the one who does not love his brother (or another person), whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.”(1 John 4:20)

@Laudato si Ad astra Truama normally requires a lot of help from other people for the affected person, nobody can overcome all of that psychic pain on their own. Many of those people leaving russia are scientists and engineers, people the regime can use to traumatise and kill more people more efficiently. Those people belong in the west, and as the situation in russia deteriorates, then people will see the need to fight against their government, but it needs time.

Some noteworthy points.
– A lot of the Russians going over the border are going just for visit but a lot are taking one way ticket.
-Only very few actual asylum seekers have come over the border, nearly everyone has a Shengen visa that allows them to travel in most of EU.
– Most Russians just go straight to airports, they just go by Finland because it’s the last Russia bordering Schengen area country that lets Shengen visa holders over the border.
