Coast guard boats are speeding between the chain of islands, slowly evacuating the population of nearly 9,000 people as Pine Island’s bridge was destroyed in the wake of Ian. NBC News’ Blayne Alexander and her team made it to Matlache to hear more from residents.

GOOD GOD DONT LIKE UGLY GETTING LORD
This looks like the scene from “Day of the Dead 1985” which took place in Fort Myers. Prayers for all those who lost their property
Oh nowwwww we want the government involved.
Amazing to see year after year, hurricane after hurricane, the same homes using wood and plaster totally destroyed. Don’t anyone use steel or reenforced concrete when they rebuild their new homes or move further inland????
“Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.” —— George Carlin
How about the Fake News that’s being reported? Amazing how people are willing to share stories with the media now! Haven’t heard a truth from Donald yet!
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.❤️🙏
Time is short,we are living in the end times as it is mentioned:
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God- 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
Out of love for you all please repent before its to late.God only saves you through Jesus christ alone.God bless you all❤️🙏❤️
There are times when humans just boggle my mind lol:
1. You live on an island 🏝️ with one road in, FL is flat meaning very high probability of flooding.
2. You was told days in advance that this hurricane would be directed towards you and told to evacuate and you live there year-after-year knowing dam well what happens in FL during hurricane season.
3. Now you want to complain about not receiving info from authorities about when you will be rescued lol.. and they told you to leave.. it’s a 🌀 hurricane that took out electricity, landline phones, cell phones and internet.
Can’t get any stupider, than stupid.
Her New York accent makes me beg to differ she’s from here and been threw every storm . Storm surge is only thing worse this time around . This is what happens when a storm hits low lined areas . Stop politicing everything and stay where ur from it u can’t take the heat .
People are assuming they stayed on the island when they probably did not. They needed help getting their stuff across because they had no more bridges left. They had a press conference about the island but sent no one to help them out is what they are complaining about. Being land locked is a lot different than having to cross the ocean with your stuff. Anyways they should have got food and water at the least because it’s an island with no way to get to a store and some mentioned they don’t have a car or have no way to get to the other side. Help never comes fast enough but if they have a press conference about my home and then send no help, I’d be angry also. lol
what stuff? In this situation you only bring the bare necessities.
I was able to get my online business started after transacting enough successful deals with Maskoffweb

Sending thoughts and prayers to Florida and SC. Thoughts for DeSantis and Graham…prayers for the people. NO AID TO FL OR SC
what does that mean Terry? No AiD from whom? The Feds, other states, private citizens, non profits? And Why?
Not prepared ?? To evacuate??? 🧐
Deathsantis would rather spend taxpayers’ money for other states then fix Florida’s infrastructure. Two lifelines to islands in Lee County gone.
DeFool Is a Disgrace.
President of The United States? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is what happens when you don’t HEED THE WARNINGS TO EVACUATE PEOPLE!! Don’t place the blame on DeSantis!! My cousin lives in Pine Island and he and his family were smart enough to GET OUT!!!!!
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), a Florida native and lawmaker, voted against a measure to open the Federal Emergency Management Agency up to millions of dollars in disaster relief.
Gaetz was one of several House Republicans on Friday who voted against a resolution to allow FEMA to use up to $15 million in the Disaster Relief Fund, Newsweek reported.
The bill eventually passed in both the House as well as the Senate and it awaits President Joe Biden’s approval.
The vote comes in the same week that Hurricane Ian killed dozens of Florida residents, flooded communities and destroyed homes and businesses.
I was in Fort Myers between June and July. My sister Malgorzata lives there. A beautiful village. Paradise on earth. Americans believe that you will rise. Poland was destroyed many times. two years. I wish you with all my heart strength and peace in rebuilding. You have a beautiful country of cool people. I have never met so many smiling people. Optimism beats from you. Take care of people and animals you will rise. After that you will come out even stronger!
I feel like eating pierogies
It’s an island! Why didn’t folks evacuate? Now these same folks are complaining about communication and where to go! Recovery takes time. They should have left the Island when warned!
“We had no communication from authorities “ lady I live 1000 miles away from Florida and I heard at least week before hurricane hit that people should evacuate.
What about Puerto Rico?
What I have wondering is two fold. Where are they going to put all the construction and house trash from clean up, especially from the islands, and will this cause more homeowners insurance companies to leave Florida and/or increase our premiums?. Mine almost doubled this past year and the “special seesion” the state had in the Spring didn’t do anything about it.
Lynda, of course it will result in higher premiums or refusal to insure by insurance companies. Why shouldn’t it? In a capitalistic society, companies cease to exist if their income doesn’t at least cover their expenses. If insurance companies are to assume the risks that are inherent to properties, they must charge accordingly.
This is where DeSantis should’ve spent that wasted 12 million tax payer dollars, instead of flying those migrants to Martha’s Vineyard.
They need to used concrete make houses those like My Jamaica!… materials they use can’t stand up to heigh wind on those low line land…..
After seeing & hearing about what happened in Florida re: the Hurricane, what kind of person would say, LIFE IS AN ADVENTURE!!? I was speechless. Please tell me what I did not & do not get!!
Maybe the government needs to establish how close real-estate can be sold near oceans. It’s just costing our state and federal government millions of dollars.
Or be able to build there, but offer the land at risk with no coverage for insurance.
That’s cause they are taking care of the millionaires on sanilbel.
If you choose to live on a sandbar at sea level in a hurricane zone then you have to accept the consequences.
sad part is if the federal government would get out of the way the bridge could have a temporary usable fix in a few weeks but with unions, prevailing wage, environmental regs, and other blessings it will take years. These people have a long difficult time ahead.
So? Where is RON?
I would move out
no communication from authorities? What does that even mean? Do these people not have a radio? Why were these people NOT prepared? Basic supplies. Food, water, medicines. Communication ither than cell. There are HAM Radios CB radios AM / FM Radios. It’s not like there were no warnings. You live on an island at sea level, what do you expect?
DeSantis should’ve kept some of the immigrants from South America as migrant workers that he bussed up to Martha’s Vineyard.
Prayers
🙏
As long as the rest of the country picks up the tab people will continue to build on barrier islands and the state won’t stop them. Then let the taxpayers of FL pay to rebuild those houses. Barrier Islands are there to protect the shoreline…not build homes on. Wake up!
If you chose to stay, then that was your choice just like not wearing a mask during Covid.
These people were told to evacuate before the storm… they decided they knew better… they are not injured nor frail… they should pull themselves up by their own bootstraps… They failed themselves… Authorities have life and death concerns; so, these people get no internet nor television nor A/C before their turn… swim or steal a boat which isn’t sunk.
Moving resources consumes resources. Reminds me of ww2 where it cost the nazis 2 gallons of fuel to haul one gallon of fuel to the Eastern front. This is why you either prepare to be on your own for several weeks or evacuate. The more people that are sent to help, the more resources the helpers themselves will consume. #1 priority is to get these people potable water. People can survive weeks without food but only a few days without water. 100 years ago most people didn’t have electricity in their homes, 30 years ago, most people didn’t have a cell phone, somehow we survived. They need water now though.
So, you just refuse to listen to evacuation orders then whine that no one is rescuing you? The people interviewed look like they have the recourses to leave. Sorry you lost your home but not sorry you’re sitting there stranded, it’s your own fault.
DISNEY UNIVERSAL AND THE CRUISE SHIPS COULD STEP UP AND HELP THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE??? SHAMEFUL!! THEY OPENED UP THE NEXT DAY $$$$ GET THE TOURIST OUT ASAP!!! THEY WOULD BE FUNDED LATER??? WOW!!!
thoughts and prayers- i thought my prayers would save me . .
oops
Cleanup will be especially hard since your on a island.
Luckily Florida believes is less government, state’s rights and pulling yourself up from bootstraps. I know they will turn down help from FEMA and turn down all federal assistance and dollars.
No handouts……… This is ridiculous. MAGA for life!!
When you refuse to evacuate what do you expect.
What part of evacuate did these people not understand?
They complain about or ignore the evacuation order, and now they’re complaining about not receiving help 3 days after the hurricane ravaged an entire region that has affected millions, including businesses.
Why would anyone ever want to retire to Florida? The odds of a hurricane destroying a person’s life savings increase EVERY year for the rest of their life. It’s like playing Russia Roulette with extreme weather events.
and don’t assume everyone has insurance, because if your house or mobile home is bought and paid for like mine, you do not have to have it, many of us seniors on fixed incomes, cannot afford the insurance…..
Hmph if the house are gone the new town guy or girl some r!ch @$$Ole wanna build some fancy highly expensive because they billionaire I hope they make the some building if not new rich own the house. 😒
if you live on an island you should be prepared to leave and have resources including another residence
Prayers
I think this is what is wrong with America. We are so reliant on our government that when something awful happens, we don’t have a clue what to do! We need to be more self sufficient and be there for one another as a community. This is not a criticism, it is an observation that hopefully will move us all to be able to help ourselves.
“I’m from the government and I’m here to help you”
At any moment, regardless of natural disaster or otherwise, you can be totally on your own. Expecting help when you didn’t help yourself speaks volumes.
Well said.
Boo hoo hoo. You live in floriduh and vote for savages. Karma pays you back.
Why didn’t they evacuate?
I feel bad for people who are told to evacuate and have no money, no transportation and no where to go. For people in this predicament government should have some kind of fund for situations like this. I know you can’t put a price tag on your life but it’s a reality when just living is there expensive there is no way of saving money when some can barely afford the necessities. Groceries and rent should be a necessity not a luxury. Without oxygen we can’t live. Food falls under the same category
They were told to leave the barrier islands in FL. Plenty of time to call for help or find shelter inland. Every storm I see people stay when ordered to evacuate and then they are either killed or begging for rescue during the storm, risking others lives. No sense at all staying on a barrier island with a big storm like Ian.
Never rely on any Govt.
I have the Ultimate Solution to flooding in Florida!.
Build a Structure the same as the American
National building located in Galveston Texas!.
1 Thousand Hurricanes! Can’t destroy that Structure!. Problem solved!.
We have lost Florida to climate change and the cost to repair all the damages between now and 2050 will be worth more moving people out of the state.
Caribbean codes need to be brought to our coast. Solid conccete with rebar and concrete roofs.
Lol
I did not know til today that my Cousin, her two kids, and her husband lived in Pine Island. They sheltered in place and got airlifted out by helicopter from Pine Island Sunday. Everybody is OK, they don’t know yet how much is lost.
My sister used to live on Sanibel and Ive been there several times. Was shocking and sad to see all the damage.
THEY TOLD U A HURRICANE WAS COMING. YOU EXPECT TO MUCH HELP
So great during this time of crisis to see Trump out there raising funds for himself…
I didn’t know he was still in the White House however, every hurricane he donates… a lot of his own money.
No rest
Should have not ignored the evacuation notice.
Those poor wealthy folks.
PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY
GOES……..
HAND IN HAND WITH FREEDOM❤️❤️🔥🇺🇸
Help is coming but
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU🇺🇸
I have seen comments from misdirected human beings. Making all of it political. If you are a Christian person? Then you don’t talk about wanting things for free. And we complain about being used by the corrupt government and they say that we are prejudice, and whatever. I don’t spend my time hating people. But. the CNN, MSNBC, and the like help create hatred. They create your stupidity.
Ps if fat Al’s story was true the island would be STRUCTURE FOR GROUPERS TODAY😳
DON’T FALL FOR IT❤️🇺🇸
Be cool and chill out
Florida Republicans, you should have Criminal Trump fix the bridges and roads with his mind, “Jedi Mind Trick!” The force is strong with him!
Complaining because residents didn’t listen to evacuation requests?! There are a lot of people impacted – they can’t get to everyone at the same time. I’m sympathetic to the destruction of course but they could have done something to help themselves – EVACUATE when told to. Now the manpower that would be bringing them water and other necessities are spending them time evacuating everyone that should have done that before.
Don’t think many people in Florida understand they are literally sitting on top of a glorified sand bar.
Literally THOUSANDS have died from Hurricane Ian in southwest Florida. but no official channel will say so.
Where it concerns a highly destructive and genocidal weather calamity such as the purposefully geoengineered OPERATION HURRICANE IAN, there is always a very complex and convoluted criminal conspiracy at work. The geoterrorists listed below were each co-conspirators in this murderous false flag operation; therefore, they all collude to systematically cover up the true death tolls lest the awakening populace get suspicious.
I don’t believe in Gods judgment on a nation.. But if God were to judge a nation.. it would be America the wicked and it would probably look like this.
All those poor poor multi-millionaires who decided to stay. Boo Hoo.
There is now a rapidly growing body of scientific proof and hard evidence with confirms that Hurricane Ian was meticulously geoengineered from its very inception until it was slammed into the Florida coastline.
An evidentiary database is now being created which will serve as a repository of all submitted evidence — scientific, physical, circumstantial, forensic, digital, testimonial and anecdotal — which will be evaluated in terms of meeting the necessary legal standards to convene a citizen grand jury.
Former employees of the various colluding alphabet soup agencies and deep insiders within the U.S. Intelligence Community are encouraged to anonymously submit their secret reports. Only one whistleblower is needed to forever expose the highly organized network of covert weather warfare programs and departments operating within Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
What???? Y’all had 5 days to evacuate. There’s no way you had no idea what was going on. No one needs a red carpet to set foot on your property and yell “hear ye, hear ye, hurricane Ian to blow your homes away 5 days henceforth!” 😑
Come on
So the question about ever seeing the island hit this hard? Please. Obviously not, seriously obvious. Y’all could also ask my neighbors the same in Mexico Beach. Don’t ask stupid questions of people who survived a massive explosion. Really?
Yes, it’s a mess there but Floridians are resilient and many will not leave, even now. I wouldn’t stay because I’ve been in one but in a second I’d be back, even swimming back if I had to, to protect my property. Looters have been noticed on the mainland Ft. Meyers and we won’t let more torture evolve around our lives. Our pieces of land and what we have left after something like this we will protect with our lives. And that’s what everyone who stays on these islands will tell you if you ask.
And it doesn’t matter what color, creed, wealth. Everyone needs help in some way but if our administration wants to make it political? Just leave it to us in Florida. We can do better without separatism.
No matter our color or how much money one has earned, we are here for one another, the supposed “new equity crap” not included. We all look the same if turned inside out and we all have a soul that life can take the wind out of.
Too bad! Pine Box Island
Mandatory evacuation is a thing, people.
If you stay that is on you….
Colorful Walking Bridge in South Korea
https://youtube.com/shorts/LwLClhQ0BVs?feature=share
A 15-ft storm surge meant this whole island would be underwater. They were told to evacuate before the hurricane. Roads, bridges, electricity, cell towers, all gone. Now they’re mad there’s “no communication?” You can’t fix stupid. And there’s a lot of stupid in Florida, that’s for sure.
It is truly amazing; people build homes on the ocean front and wonder why did I lose my home?!?!?
Everyone that lives in Florida should have a stand up paddle and inflatable boat handy.
Unfortunately, global warming and climate change will make it increasingly more difficult to reside in such beautiful places. Especially if people keep voting for leaders who vote against doing anything about it. Although the climate change doesn’t cause these storms, it makes them dangerously powerful. I hope the people on this beautiful little Island can recover from this.
no communication??? you were told to evacuate!!! and also told you were on your own , idiots
I like how NBC is pushing the blame on the Florida authorities
How many times are we going to pay to rebuild Florida? F the Governor POS
Stop speaking our of your nose
Remember Florida voted no to emergency aid!
But the best president ever, will care about all American citizens!
