The Department of Energy is expected to announce tomorrow that researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab in California have used lasers to produce a nuclear fusion reaction that creates energy. With such a finite supply of lithium and cobalt, what will happen to current battery-powered electric vehicles? How will we be able to transport food, specifically vegetables and fruit to the higher latitude cities in winter when battery-powered truck driving range is reduced by 60% in very cold winter conditions?
We will still need a multitude of newer generation fission SMRs and microreactors to produce the hydrogen required for vehicles powered by fuel cells. Even electric prop-driven aircraft are restricted to a lower ceiling altitude such that jet fuel for jet engine aircraft will remain critical for another hundred years…….

This is not the “holy grail” that scientists have been chasing for decades. The holy grail they have been chasing is cold fusion not regular fusion which is what this is. Also the only clean energy that is truly clean is Antimatter. It is 100% efficient and 100% waist free. This is because if you take 1 tsp of antimatter and 1 tsp of normal matter they annihilate each other, becoming pure energy. The energy in 1 gram of antimatter when mixed with 1 gram of normal matter is the same as the Hiroshima bomb and could power the SpaceX rocket for a year( if I remember right). This is how powerful and efficient antimatter is. The two problems with antimatter is that it costs 1 quadrillion dollars to make in a lab. And currently there is only approximately 1 microgram of antimatter. And you have to have a magnetic trap to contain the antimatter.
