Zimbabwe has a struggling economy and high unemployment, and many graduates can’t find jobs in their specialities.
Now some of them are turning to farming, and are finding some success.
But challenges remain, some of these farmers tell Al Jazeera, as the system is not set up to support their efforts.
Al Jazeera’s @HaruMutasa reports from Goromonzi, Zimbabwe.

Very sad
What’s sad they utilizing their land
Not sad at all. Contribution of young farmers has led the country to have one of its best wheat harvests in over 50 years. Just more accelerated investment is what is needed.
This is the perfect job.
I would like to contribute and teach Agricultural Technology that will benefit this nation.
@Loveisbliss do you know what months spring and autumn start? What’s the environment like?
@FromTheStars so it’s reversed from the US seasons. It’s winter in Zim during US summers and Spring during Fall. However, the temperatures rarely drop below zero in winter although some regions get frost in the morning and by noon the temperatures would’ve risen.
The soils are generally favorable for arable farming, with the best land and weather found in the eastern part of the country and some northern regions such as Mazowe, etc. In the southern part of the country is where animal husbandry is feasible.
Finally, the weather is great and nature breathtaking. The temperatures don’t reach extremes on either end in most of the country. Usually in the 50-82°F for most of the year.
@Loveisbliss do you know the average rainfall levels? Also, is there any seasons with high humidity, and is there lots of fog during fall?
@FromTheStars 21.5 to 35.5 inches. In the eastern highlands, there tends to be more fog and rain. December – March are the wet season with higher humidity levels. Then the rest are dry except for the eastern highlands where humidity is still higher
@Loveisbliss hmm, this is extremely promising.. there’s potential to make alot of progress in the region..
Zimbabwe river always drought
AGRICULTURE IS A JOB AND A VERY GOOD JOB AT THAT
Thanks for covering on this.
The food should stay in Africa though.
How are they going to buy technology from the West and the East if they keep the food in Africa?
it takes more than just keen young farmers the infrastructure and performance of the other services needs to support it the product no matter how good it is needs to be transported to ports and documentation processed etc etc all that has collapsed in Zimbabwe produce will be transported on roads with pot holes farmers will need to bribe customs officials to put through their export documentation on time the list goes on you are competing with much more organised countries without those challenges i really feel for those young people in zimbabwe all we can do is pray for them
As a Nigerian 🇳🇬 and as an Agriculturists, the problems/challenges bedevilling the growth and food production is not farfetched, ranging from insincerity among African Government and corrupt politicians, to lack of modern technology, next is infrastructure- storages & distribution platforms and to cap it all effect of climate change. To get it right, African Government must be intentional and deliberate in formulating policies that’ll reduce hunger&poverty across Africa.
My man same here in Uzbekistan even worse
Nice hot weather in Uzbekistan

@COCKTAIL it gets that cold over there??
@lan dz yeap .In winters usually mild but sometimes it get way too cold
Imagine getting a college degree, not being able to find work, but rather than starting a business offering services ONLINE in the field that you studied… you instead start a farming business… because there was no work…… why didn’t you go and apply for a job as a farmer… BECAUSE THERE ARE NO FARMING JOBS. YOU NEED TO START BUSINESSES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Master degree do not protect you against hunger, but farming gives life

Do not refuse to do good to the needy,
if it is in your power to do so.
What’s better than this job?
I mean gotta study what jobs are in demand where you live… No point in getting a degree in a field where there are no jobs… Unless have the money and means to relocate to where those jobs are… Hope that guy don’t got a bunch of student loan debt now…
Elections this year in Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe get ready for propaganda fake news like this especially with your lithium ban get ready for lies, discouragement. And they will use your own citizen to report fake news
Some of the land went un utilized? MOST of the land did. And what land was farmed on was not nearly as effecient.
Which one is better farming or emploment
