At least six people are dead after severe storms ripped through Alabama and across the southeast, leaving behind significant damage. The weather service says over a dozen tornadoes have been reported in the Yellowhammer State. NBC News meteorologist Bill Karins shares the latest.

The tornado itself skirted us by approximately 1/4 of a mile, and four of the six total fatalities occurred extremely close to us (.6 miles, to be exact) on Autagua County 40, which is the road that runs E to W in front of (perpendicular to) our house. Our subdivision was extremely lucky today. The only damage we received were downed trees, shingles removed, an extensive hail damage. Witnessing firsthand the destructive and relentless nature of something as powerful as a long track tornado is something I never want to experience ever again.
OMG…it had to have been extremely terrifying. Praying for you and everyone who has been affected by this vicious storms.
Back in May 1984 a tornado struck my old neighborhood in Montgomery Alabama. Very horrifying experience I never want to repeat. Yesterday the twister that hit Marbury missed my home by 1/2 mile! My wife was home and for the first time heard “that sound” you never forget when a tornado is close by. We’re currently still without power but we are very fortunate. My wife and myself drove to get dinner where power was still available, the devastation we saw just north of our house is frightening!

The world as we no it has been changing a lot. I bet if it was not for us ang Globle Warning are plant and Storm’s would change. Alot has to do with pollution in the air. Driving are cars trucks semis xcetera and factor’s give off a lot of this. Think of when covid-19 was around. We couldn’t go out much at all and everything was shut down. Within 6 months of that are pollution from vehicles and factories went down by 80%. When it was done and we started are life back up that Lucien went back up to 80% and we’re back in the same exact spot. Pollution equals global equals more storms. We change what we are doing all these problems I bet pollution global warming and storms would be reduced by 50% or more. It’s crazy how we go day by day living are life’s not thinking about the damage that we are doing to our planet. We take a lot for granite and it’s catching up really fast

Aww man 😔, this is rough. The warning alarms should be sooner,and the tornado states should provide underground storm cellars to every resident
People living in tornado states need to prepare themselves with their own tornado cellars, etc. The government is not responsible for taking care of things people should do for themselves. A nanny state is expensive and restrictive. They could choose to live elsewhere.
The sirens actually did go off about 12:15. I heard them loud and clear. It was not even storming at that point in time. I believe they went ahead and activated them while the storm was still in Dallas county. The storm itself hit after 1pm. We live in an area in where those sirens go off frequently. This is at least the third time in 30-35 days. Sadly people become complacent after awhile telling themselves it’s just another “radar indicted tornado” that isn’t actually reaching the ground until it does.

You’re describing most of the country especially if you include coastal hurricanes, earthquakes, flooding., and wildfires. Im not aware of any place totally safe from natural distasters.

After watching 2 tornadoes form over my house, LITERALLY, here in NOLA in Dec & a few months prior to then…my thoughts & deepest prayers are with ALLLLL of those affected 🙏…because just witnessing the power & destruction of a Tornado is traumatizing in itself so my heart breaks for everyone who has to endure the wrathful weather events!

I am born & raised here in New Orleans…being home during Hurricane Ida, only because we weren’t prepared for it to become as powerful & large as Hurricane Katrina was + on the Anniversary as Katrina but sadly Ida became an almost direct hit on the city & was the scariest 12hours I’ve experienced during all of the Hurricanes I’ve lived through thanks to the force & sound of the extreme winds battering my home. Thankfully we endured it & only had minor damage to the exterior of the home & outside fencing…buttttt I REALLY have to say that a Tornado is 1,000×’s more frightening than a Hurricane or Cyclone because it can COMPLETELY decimate your home in a matter of seconds whereas @ least when a Hurricane/Cyclone strikes you have a predicted forecast with a generalized sense of where/when it will make landfall, giving you time to fortify your dwelling and evacuate if you choose…when a tornado hits you have NO IDEA where/when or even IF you’re going to be caught in its path of destruction because they’re so unpredictable! The only thing you can do in preparation for a Tornado’s potential impact is to go hide in the most sturdy portion of your house & pray your house is strong enough to withstand its tremendous force or pray it bounces away from your house & doesn’t take you away to the land of OZ with Dorothy and Toto 😵😱🙏🤞Basically Hurricanes are scary enough but a Tornado is probably the strongest, most severe weather event that Mother Nature’s wrath can do to our beloved, POWERFUL planet! May God Bless & keep all affected by Nature’s Fury around the world SAFE!

Those storms are now rolling through coastal northeast NC 2 am.
Literally missed my neighborhood in Griffin GA by about 5-10miles. A curfew is in effect right now and a lot of people are still without power. Seeing everything in the morning (since this happened around sunset) should be interesting.
Everytime I think about this, these people just lived their lives and woke up today morning as every other day and they never knew this would be the last day of their life. This tornado/rain/storm will end it all. Just a thought I had. RIP.

I work on Maxwell and there was some damage; signs ripped off buildings, small sheds destroyed, etc, but I don’t think it was a tornado. Just very strong winds.

It used to be unusual? Not really. It’s always been documented to happen here because the jet stream really. If anything it’s much more rare than 10-15 and 20 years ago.

I just need to vent this commentary on where we have come as a society. NBC News aired a piece on the victims of this horrific tornado event in Alabama. I was just dumbfounded that a mother did not know how her children were at their school – alive or lost – yet she first took time to make a detailed video and cry extensively on the loss of her house and say “at least we are alive – well I don’t know about the kids.” At least NBC News thought they should follow up and see how the kids were.
