If you commit a crime while possessing a firearm, it should be automatic 25 to life, no exceptions. I don’t care if that will disproportionately affect black people. We don’t need gun reform, we need to use the laws already on the books. No more plea bargains.
@Imagined Mountains That sounds like a positive action to try, but I doubt law enforcement and the government will go along with doing away with making deals and plea bargaining. If something like that did pass and become enforced, they would restructure the whole idea of it, like giving states evidence and witness for the prosecution as well as plea bargaining, and call them by a totally different name. They rely on those methods in law enforcement. IMHO.

they searched for a gun cause they somehow knew he might have one? but didn’t find it… so where was it if not in his backpack? or is that what they searched? obviously there was intent of SOMETHING. he brought it to school FOR something! children that young sometimes can’t comprehend CONSEQUENCES before they act, but, having BEEN a six year old at least once before, i can vouch that they CAN have intent to do a thing. and follow through
I agree with this. In the moment reactions are one thing, but planning how to get his mom’s gun, when to take it, how to get it to school and when to use it…..that’s alot of planning and a lot of chances to change your mind.

Kids from homes where they can readily access guns – those kids need more support, not less. One difficulty is that teachers are always identifying kids who need extra support but there are not always the staff or support programs needed. However, what this shows is that this is a matter of life and death. Governments should provide extra support staff to help needy kids and programs for those kids should be caring and constructive, not harsh.

it continues to shock me, although i’m not sure why anymore, that there isn’t a standard protocol for all schools- sad as this is to say- for the steps to take in each and every scenario. why does it almost always seem to come out that NOT taking immediate action created a deadly or dangerous outcome?

In order to protect students and staff, it appears they’re going to need to put this in place.

Why the child was angry is just as relevant as why he shot his teacher. Let’s not forget we’re talking about a six-year-old boy, not a grown man who can make rational decisions. I’ve been slapped in the face, kicked in the rear-end, and I’ve even had my ears pulled by elementary school teachers. I even witnessed a teacher duck tape a child to a chair because he pulled a girl’s ponytail. So, before we start saying who’s an angel and who’s a demon, we need to get to the bottom of this tragic incident. After all, it may be the teacher who needs anger management therapy.

This is 2023, children have ipads dropped in their laps at age 2 & have access to all the info in the world. This has to be impacting child brain development. Access to more info always does. When was the infant statute put into place? It seems like little kids are much more aware now. I’d love to hear if child development people have noticed developmental changes with all of he new tech?

The way this shooting was handled was very poor. The police should have questioned the boy and parents immediately after the shooting.
