El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has defended a newly unveiled mega-prison.
It is built to house thousands of alleged gang members.
The so-called “Terrorism Containment Center” has been built outside Tecoluca, southeast of the capital, San Salvador.

If you live in one of the many areas where gangs ruled and had the power of life and death over you and your family… every day, you would see this as a good change.
If you lived in a gated community, with private security, didn’t need to go to working class areas AND benefited from the nuances of the so-called democracy and political duopoly, you may be inclined to say it is a bad thing.
And if you live in another country and ponder about this from the comfort of your home, not having to flee your home because a gang has given you and your family 24 hours to abandon your home and relinquishing it to them, you may think it is a bad thing.
For the majority of the population restoring security at the price of an ongoing but temporary state of emergency has been heave sent. Small commerce won’t be extorted, children won’t be recruited to the gangs at school, parents will no longer wonder if they will return home every time they leave to work, drivers can go to any area without worrying they’ll be extorted or disappeared.
What would you want to occur if you lived in constant fear from street gangs?

Clean up corruption, provide land reform and fair laws, create jobs and education for all, then give the gangs a choice of life without crime or death.

This is a state of the art SuperMax facility which signals that El Salvador’s gang problem is finally over. The people are liberated from the clutches of the maras, and are now getting educated, starting businesses, finally enjoying a life without fear. Instead of emigrating to the United States and elsewhere, often illegally, a whole generation is remaining to build their country’s future. For the first time in living memory, the population here has reason to be truly proud of their great country and hopeful for its even better future.
Statistically, in 2023 El Salvador is safer than Canada, our home country. Unlike our home country, El Salvador’s economy is booming. Wages are rising. Opportunity is buregoning.
While the developed world deacends into political, cultural, and moral ruin, El Salvador is winning.

If this had been done 30 years ago, the problem would’ve been contained and it wouldn’t have be so massive. “Due process” standards from developed countries in a postwar society with serious structural problems fertilised the gangs. Due process ensured witnesses and victims were neutralised before giving evidence. It is sad that human rights protections allowed criminals to control territories and their inhabitants.
At least Bukele didn’t go full Duterte on gangs! Gang members will be treated similarly to maximum security prisoners in countries like Australia and the US. Punishment rooms are for inmates who break the rules or remain dangerous at all times.
Had this been done 30 years ago, it would have saved the lives of 150,000 victims of gang crime, including children, young men and women, small commerce operators, teachers, police, soldiers and many others.
Good on Bukele for doing what others didn’t want to do.

At the height of the slaughter in 2015, there were 6,656 homicides in El Salvador. The real number was almost certainly much higher because many of the dead never had their bodies recovered: Gangs would dispose of corpses in other ways than just leaving them to be found. Dissolving a body in acid in the manner of Mexican cartels was one of those ways. So, the families of the deceased never even knew what had ultimately happened to their loved ones. Last year in 2022, as a result of President Nayib Bukele’s policies, only 495 people were murdered in El Salvador. As the gangs were no longer operating with impunity and able to freely dispose of bodies, that is probably a very accurate number. Bukele has completely transformed El Salvador. To see evidence of that, just take a look at all the videos on YouTube posted by people who travelled there over the last year, especially over the last six months.
