What the public needs to do: Ask politicians for increased regulation.
This is what sweeping roll backs of safety and environmental laws look like in action. Companies do not invest in safety, it eats into the bottom-line those companies are incentivized and have a responsibility to share holders to maintain. Safety comes from regulatory laws, that’s the only mechanism were safety practices trump economics.
This company is demonstrating the need first hand, and likely showing why rail workers were fighting so hard for their own work environment just last year.
Where did the money for safety, best practices, and full staffing go? Likely into stock buybacks and investor portfolios. And that’s where it will keep going if a company is left to place all of it’s onw priorities. Don’t ask them to make changes, legislate the changes.
Then Tucky Carlson gets on the TV and whines about regulation and suddenly half the country hates the very idea of regulation forever, always and in perpetuity.

The Freight Rail companies lobbying aggressively to skirt basic safety regulations and bare bones inspection practices. Their pet project Precision Scheduled Railroading, is nothing more than a massive cost cutting measure done in the name of pleasing their shareholders while treating their front line workers like absolute garbage, and even deliberately understaffing their train crews to dangerous, skeleton crew levels. These derailments are going to continue so long as these idiots continue to bend over backwards for short term profits at the expense of everyone and everything else.
