Electric scooters are seen by many as a cheap and green way to get around cities.
But they also pose a danger to pedestrians.
A vote is being held in Paris on Sunday to decide whether to allow scooters in the city.
Al Jazeera’s Natacha Butler reports from Paris, France.

The issue aren’t the scooters itself. Is about how use them, ride them like crazy on busy roads, or dump them everywhere.
I think there should be an open courses on how to drive them before someone buys it he or she needs to be with a license
more people are going to be killed or seriously injured by these things . any caught. riding one on a pedestrian area needs some jail time
Main issue is lack of an established transport system for escooter or bike. Cars and motorcycles moves around safely because of a well established road system dedicated for these vehicles. Escooter and ebike cannot be easily integrated into the existing road system.
But since they cause harm and accidents in the city then it’s better to stop them than waiting for the Matter to worse
😂😂

They get to vote on a scooter but not pensions 🤣 no wonder Paris is burning.
France is a failed state. They raised the debt by bombing Iraq and Syria. Now they are paying the price. Karma hit them hard.
This is just a new Way for the French Government to tax the French
Absolutely stupid idea to ban scooters. How do they differ from bikes, e-bikes and mopeds? I recently tried a scooter in Paris with my friends. It was fun and saved our feet from being destroyed by walking the huge city. Scooter can go slow, walking speed to 25kmh. Very useful and fun transport.
bikes, e-bikes and mopeds all run on the road scooters want to run on the pavement
@Grave Peril should we ban electric wheelchairs too?
@Sr H one doing 25kmh yes
People will want to ban them because of user behaviour, but those bad users are a minority. So, yet again, a minority get a good and affordable idea banned.
I hate them
Another cash cow regulation imho
Hope they will also ban petrol scooters now
Look at mainstream media narrative trying to deflect from what’s REALLY going on in the world. Nothing on the riots or tax building in France?
Shame on you mainstream media narrative SLAVES!!!!
So if the millennials and gen zeds can’t be bothered to get out of bed and vote, the older folks will vote to ban them and the youngsters will have another reason to hate the boomers.
Last summer I rode one at night while being heavily intoxicated. Felt young again!
Anyone caught on a E scooter will face the guillotine
I live in Paris and have not been informed of this referendum, I mean before seeing this news by Al Jazeera. When the vote is closed in a couple of hours, you’d better ask the number of votes and not only the percentages they will communicate on.
THAT’S STUPID, WHY WOULD YOU BAN THEM? WHAT HAPPENED 2 CLIMATE BS CHANGE?
Stop shouting.
@Dem Pilafian ok COMMUNIST.
Please ban them, they’re dangerous.
I dunno about ppl getting killed by them. I would imagine a lot more on them get flung by cars or squashed by trucks.
Sadly Paris authorities informed news outlets but forgot to inform Parisians about this referendum.
E-scooters are injuring vulnerable people walking on the sidewalk. No safe place left for pedestrians
It is rather annoying as a pedestrian when they come along. At least bicyclists and e-bikers are happy to move aside, use their signal, or simply slow down and say “I’m passing you, good day!”
@BAYER’S BLUE BAYOU BIOWEAPONLOL
No oil =No pollution =No terrorism..
get of the crack lol.. oil and pollution aren’t the cause of terrorism.
I think they should cost less and go more slowly. E-bikes are a safer choice.
We got college kids on single wheel devices zipping 45-55 mph along side the roads here.
It scary to be around them.
A fall at 40mph , there’s no telling what direction they’ll go & I don’t want to be the 1 who couldn’t avoid them.
@Noneshere you definitely shouldn’t attempt getting into a car then, they’re like 10 times worse
Country in great decline. That’s the last thing they should worry about. But that’s how they keep them distracted from what really matters. So sad
Facts?
I find up to 20 of them in the river under one bridge every year. My city has multiple bridges. Each with its own cash of drowned e scooters. After the spring thaw, they magically disappear.
So sad😂
They are a motor bike, the power source doesn’t make them different. The same rules should apply.
then enjoy waiting on the road behind a 30km/h motor bike as it slowly goes down the street 😂
@backward thoughts you’d prefer it running down the footpath your wife and kids think they’re safe on?🤓🇦🇺
he does realise that there are classifications for motorbike scooter and moped right? all 3 are based on vehicle power source moped typically being sub 50cc scooter being a moped over 50cc and motorbike being anything in a motorbike frame over 100cc
there not being treated differently because there electric there being treated differently because we treat all vehicles differently based on there power output
and those scooters have barely 10cc of power considering 50cc is 6kw of power and these have 250w of power
there treated differently because there slower
also do you think we should treat mobility scooters like cars because they have 4 wheels and a motor?
@Sarge Mate chances of on old, or any, person getting hit on a footpath are greater if it’s 10 – 100cc. People on a footpath seldom get hit by a licenced rider on a 1000cc Ducati. I cant say the same for a 14yo kid, with his friend on the back, of a 20cc or E scooter. PS I live in Australia, rules may be different where you live, but motorbikes and scooters (Vespa etc) must all be licenced, and the rider. UNPOWERED bicycles and scooters not so. E-bikes/scooters here are powered but unlicenced.
They tried that rental thing around here but within 6 months they were junk left all over the town.
They’re easy to hot wire, so many of the rental were just flat out stolen.
Being rentals they usually have a quality frame & parts are basically free everywhere if you need some.
It’s ok if the public buys they’re own, but rentals are a disaster .
The official parking spots are notorious magnets for theft and vandalism of e-scooters and e-bikes.
Electric Assist Makes You Fat, A lifetime of not moving much has a big price on your health and appearance. The humble bicycle is still best
THat is the reason their banned or away now from CDMX…also our diet is not the best.
Amen, brother/sister. It’s cringy, seeing grown adults too lazy to ride a fecking bike.
They can get it right to ban scooters but not migrants lmao
People died on scooters in san diego but because the scooter companies pay the city while making billions they dont care how many people die.
Scooters wont go away
I once saw one up a tree
Ever heard of bicycles, you lazy frogs? Those scooters are embarrassing.
It is not proper to impose a fine on the righteous,
but to beat nobles with blows is lawlessness.
They conduct a referendum for this but the pension law affecting everyone is rammed through without a vote in parliament.
😂😂😂
regulation is good, banning isnt
If people are going to drive badly they should drive cars
@Wulf I think he’s being sarcastic
@Spiritual Seeker possibly, but who can really tell these days.
if ppl are going to dump scooters, let them sit in idle rush hour traffic using up gas instead
@backward thoughts Honestly I used to use electric scooters to get around everywhere for months and my legs got a lot weaker, and I lost a lot of muscle. Basically it has the same effect as being in a wheelchair. It’s far better to walk/bike.
@Spiritual Seeker biking is awesome but i squat 160kg to preserve muscle mass for the rest of this bodys life. scooters are for fast city travel without the tediousness that comes with managing bikes in high density city travelling. otherwise i generally agree with you
Another victory for the car and petrol lobbies
E scooters are all over place in many cities across the world. Why do you french apply a heavy handed approach to everything? Let people ride their scooters and stop being so precious.
I wouldn’t go to France.Cos France is no Longer France.
In Vienna, I always considered them to be a nuisance at best, a danger mostly, but however you want to see it, they are in any case a massive waste of resources for … yeah, what exactly? Electricity is not “green”, it has to come from somewhere, those things need to be manufactured, repaired, distributed, collected,… A _huge_ waste of resources in an age, where our planted is threatened by our overconsumption of its resources. And for what? For a few guys racing like idiots, ignoring most basic rules of safety. I really hope Parisians will ban those things, and other cities – like Vienna? – will follow. I really can see no overall benefit to those. The world was better before they entered the scene.
driving one of those means one less car being driven, dullwit
They are a menace
@Mash MAB nothing worse than having another mode of transport coming at you on the pavement laugh all you want
*French Guiana🇨🇵 have border disputes with Suriname.*
make border agreement & keep peace!!
Ban them.
What about the cars?!
Escooters and ebikes are definitely going to be much more prominent in cities in the coming years. ❤ Great for the environment. I want to learn how to refurbishing them for people as a hobby/side job to prevent waste.
