Ultimately, you are right. They should always fact check and call out obvious lies, but I think some of the legacy news organizations from network TV and printed media (excl. cable news, political editorials, and opinion host) are overly cautious not to appear to be attacking Trump and offending his supporters.
I could be wrong, but I think the allegations in the indictment are probably a lot worst than anyone in MSM expected, so they’re showing a type of mercy. The truth should always be most important, but I think they’re trying to avoid attacking Trump at his lowest point. It looks like his 2024 campaign is toast.

Trump is entering a whole different world with these criminal charges. I think he’s going to find what works for him in the cable news pundit cycle is NOT going to help him in a criminal defense (in fact, it’s likely to make it worse).
He thought it would be a good idea to disregard legal advice and go public about his legal strategy of using the Presidential Records Act (“PRA”) as a defense.
He was surprised that the PRA was no where in the indictment. It isn’t even relevant to the charges because he gave the Justice Department plenty of advanced notice by constantly talking about his case.
Thing is trump has always pushed bs legal theories in public, failed in court, claimed the court was corrupt, and ended the incident with a political boost. This time failing in court means prison. But he has no valid defense. His lawyers know that, so his only hope is to delay/win the election (slim chance). That’s why they won’t even attempt to restrain his public comments, no matter how damning. Cause at this point, he literally could shoot someone on 5th Ave, and it wouldn’t make any difference in his legal fate. If he loses the election, he’s toast.

NBC doesn’t even know what he was charged with. He wasn’t charged with mishandling or illegally possessing classified documents rather his charges allege he improperly possessed or mishandled documents with defense information. A charge which clearly both Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton also committed. This is because the ruling previously rendered in the Clinton sock drawer case and the Presidential records act would almost certainly result in hid acquittal.
He is being charged because a Grand Jury of peers decided he more than likely broke the law. He is being charged because he tried to hide classified boxes when if he’d just given them back he would have had no issues.
