Public education in the USA is grossly underfunded. Is that really a surprise to anyone? Yes, a better nationwide education system might cost more, and we can no longer trust certain states to fund their public schools appropriately. Unfortunately, in a capitalist society, priorities are the things that we spend our money on. Yes, we need to spend more money to hire more teachers and pay better wages to recruit and retain the best talent. The unwillingness to expend tax dollars on this essential public service speaks volumes on how little you value children, job readiness, the critical thinking and knowledge of history/civics needed to be an informed voter in a democracy, basic familiarity with ethics, psychology, philosophy to strength the mind and fend off the anxiety that life sends us all, etc. Yes, spend the money on education. Ignorance is much more expensive.
the difference between biden and trump doing business is that trump was doing it before office and i know so was biden, a car dealership owner…but trump has no allegation in taking favors for these deals whereas, the allegation against the bidens is that they used their political influence to curry favors in the form of literally financial advantages that they otherwise didn’t have. american billionaires have every right to pursue financial deals overseas, on any corner of this world and the nature of this nation is such… that most people like to see americans with deals in their hands at their front doors.
taking political office doesn’t end your right to do business…there’s no non compete or anything like that. many presidents have taken advantage of doing deals after office, mostly in the form of books or speeches and even those don’t breach (with legal advice) any contract obligation that they took when they sat at the oval office.

2nd I agree that black history should be taught as part of the regular curriculum in schools. In fact, I would add Native American history, because ALL cultures have different historical experiences, mostly because of the influences of others.
But on principle, I also disagree with teachers going rogue to teach whatever they please to students. I worked in IT at a JC. While servicing computers, I overheard computer science instructors making off topic political comments in their classrooms.
How about if Muslim teachers started indoctrinating students with Sharia law?
I suspect that most of your students because more interested in your black history teachings, because you had informed them that you were doing something naughty and that they shouldn’t tell on you.

But, going back to your original comment, I can’t believe that you seriously think as a teacher that kids being out of school playing computer games all day for 2 semesters (or whatever it was) didn’t adversely affect their academic scores.

Hope that NBC takes the time to read the comments we offer. It is time to STOP blaming the pandemic for things happening in our society now. The reality of our education system is clear.
It is weak and lame, most if not all countries in UE, Asia, and even in South America, provide twice the quality of education. In the US, everything involves politics. Most kids are just unwilling to adhere to discipline and sacrifice to learn. In the US, many don’t even know simply subjects like geography, in addition, both parents (if and when available) should participate after school, after dinner, at home, but everyone is so busy, working O.T. or having a P.T. to make ends meet, many kids are unsupervised and waste their times on line, playing games, or wanting to obtain followers on one of the many social media outlets. Young teenagers spend their time tik-toking. This is a complete waste of energy and quality time. It should be prohibited to minors. Our society is headed to a place of no return, and nothing concrete is being done.
Students in Asia STUDY. Especially Chinese students. American parents have high expectations for their children with very little effort expended. There is a lot of excuse-making and coddling, but rarely the kind of effort that is required for students to advance academically the way that Asian students do.

The wake up call on education and the desire to do something about are well and good; However, there are qualifications that need to be met to teach; there need to be more teachers; the sociopolitical upheaval of the last six years has lead unprecedented numbers of teachers leaving the profession–dedication and desire to do public good go only so far when you’re not only paying for classroom supplies out of your pocket, and dealing with normal classroom stuff, but also having to worry about whether each day will be the day when the school shooter drill isn’t a drill, facing threats of violence from parents who don’t think you’re teaching right; facing legal peril because you had a banned book on your shelves or used the wrong freaking pronoun or, God forbid, the wrong colored M&Ms for a class project. Teachers need backing by all public officials! It is as important as throwing much needed funding into education! Knock it off with the stupid book bans, pronoun wars, and all the other BS–they’re not doing anything positive for our kids or our country.
The only modern western country which still executes its own citizens has something to say to the rest of us about fundamental human rights 🤣🤣🇺🇸

As parents you have to put in the extra work to help them catch up because teachers are already overwhelmed, underappreciated, and definitely underpaid after 8-12 yrs of schooling. I used workbooks, free online educational resources, home Ec life skills, and such to do something everyday-365. There are no days off in life. You have to put in constant effort to get consistent results. For example: I have a daughter with mosaic Down; she was able to graduate a year later than planned because of COVID but she did it in 6 mo. My son has ADD; that child has a slower-than-molasses speed but since I know that I worked with him everyday and he is caught up. My niece and nephew that I was M-F, have special needs-my poor nephew has Grand Mal seizures but I am at that school in 5 minutes if he needs it and we work on his reading, writing and arithmetic. My niece just came to live with us last year from Georgia. At 11 yo she had a 1st grade level in math and reading, in 1 year of working on math and reading she is up to 4th grade and moving right along. I know it’s hard I’m a full time law student, mu husband is a full time Substance Use Disorder student. Living with his elderly mother and taking care of her. But just 5-10 minutes a day, everyday, goes a long way. Heck just playing Monopoly helps. Get off your devices and video games and invest in the children in your immediate circle and they will come out alright. JMHO.
