I think the Wagner debacle made Prigozhin look weak, not Putin. Putin snuffed out the _alleged_ rebellion in less than twenty-four hours with _allegedly_ a minimal loss of life and equipment. One thing we are sure of is that _everyone_ across Russia came out in support of Putin. Not one institution from the army to the media to the police to the regional governors even wavered for a second. If anyone ever says again that president Putin is hated or feared or despised or resented by the Russian people, this is pretty solid proof that they’re wrong.

It’s unlikely that Lukachenko brokered anything. It’s even more unlikely that Prigozhin would agree to exile in Belarus. There’s a different deal going down. We don’t know what it is, but Prigozhin must have been promised a lot more and is still making his move. The deal we have been told about means certain death for Prigozhin so he would have continued onto Moscow and fought it out. We basically have no clue what is going on with oligarchs, armies, the political elite and Putin but there’s a lot going on.
I agree. It doesn’t make sense. But, the real losers are his private mercenaries. He left them to fend for themselves. He was an inspiring figure; gifted with hubris. They followed him into insurrection, had the public’s support (and local military as they took land heading to Muscovia). And then, Prigo takes a deal that doesn’t make any sense. Muscovies are on a witchhunt right now to punish the insurrectionists. I don’t see how Wagnerites recover from this. A Putin ideologue will takeover? That won’t inspire them. Putin’s ideologues have a reverse-Midas touch (everything they touch turns bad). They’re not going to fold into the regular army. In that environment, the army wouldn’t trust them.
This looks all bad for Putin’s goals. He’s lost a fighting force. I just don’t understand Prigo’s motivation. If the deal was nothing more than we’ve been told, then I’m positive he met a Khashoggi fate the moment he arrived in Belarus. He was smart enough to know that would happen, so… it’s unclear what the deal really was (and if it was a ruse). There’s a line in the movie “Open Range,” “There’s some things in life worse than dying.” I can’t imagine Prigo selling out his men this way.

@Andreas Stampf All I have seen is Russia has taken about 20,000sq km of land and the Ukraine hasn’t been able to get it back and they just recently lost Bakhmud. The big Ukrainian counter offensive seems like a nothing event and has barely being able to reach the first main defensive lines of the Russians. Now it looks like the Ukrainians are starting to get pushed back from the last few weeks of gains and they have lot a lot of armor and troops with very little to show for it expect a few tiny villages. And the so could modern weapons tanks etc being supplied to the Ukraine have fallen flat, a lot has been destroyed, so many Bradley’s have been destroyed in one location it got nick named Bradley corner. I’m not a fan of this war, I hope it’s over soon but I doubt the Ukraine is ever going to win.
