Across the United States, some malls are undergoing big changes. Businesses such as animal shelters, trampoline parks and movie theaters are filling the spaces that have been left empty in recent years. NBC News’ Brian Cheung has the story.

They should sell weed.
Interesting remake 👍
Is that Grand Teton Mall in Idaho Falls, ID?
Yes it is! Clicked on the video because I recognized that entrance
I like this idea
Grocery Store? Bottle shop? Like in Australia?
In Europe there are grocery stores at malls too.
@Raina Cherienne Also in brazil and I guess most of the world.
We’ve always had grocery stores and wine shops in malls, so what on earth are you even talking about? Right off the top of my head, I can think of two–the Trader Joe’s at a mall in Brooklyn called City Point and an upscale grocery store at the mall in Hudson Yards mall.
Gotta love the ARROGANCE of foreign nationals. How about a grocery store and bottle shop in Australia? Nah, how about the ones the countless malls across the United States have had for decades? How about that?
@Raina Cherienne We have them in American malls, too. And your point being…?
@Stranded NYer I’m in the US I’ve never seen an actual grocery store at a mall. Like candy shop or pretzels but not where you can buy stuff like potatoes etc.
Love the idea ❤
This is a very good idea more space means less animals being killed because others come in. I wish where I live in Sanford, NC would do something like this. The animal shelter here is really small.
1:03 Fair Oaks mall, Fairfax VA,. Had a Public library in the 90’s.
Great idea!
This needs to be done in so many places! Empty unused buildings and spaces every way you look!
With the shortage of available housing, you’d think that more of said unused spaces would be converted into housing.
@krnpowryes but it’s not easy with zoning regulations and renovation costs, like installing plumbing
Malls were never that great to begin with and they killed Main Street, so I couldn’t care less.
What constituted a Main Street?
Cant wait till mall of america puts in a golf course
Ewww Charter Schools!! I REBUKE YOU SATAN IN THE NAME OF CHRIST JESUS!!!!
thank heaven somebody with good and simple ideas still exists…I would love a shopping mall like that nearby. (of course, all of that until the Banks will walk in)
I don’t know why malls in the US are boring. In other countries, malls have almost everything to keep you entertained with or without spending. You’ve got parks, seating areas, groceries/supermarkets, movie theaters, IMAX, gaming arcades, skating rinks, bowling alleys, small amusement parks, restaurants, shops high end and low end, bars, music lounges, pet shops, etc… Including banks and government satellite offices to transact. (But then your recent bank news…)
I dunno about other husbands but I’d be willing to pay for an hour of nap time on a quiet couch while my wife goes shopping inside these malls.
Why you go with her then?
Wow if every mall or space had this idea so many malls, buildings wouldn’t go abandoned…..
Love these ideas with animals and library.

In Europe there are shopping streets near city centers. and are always the center of everything. In the U.S., it’s the boring malls that end up closing and then are an eyesore until they’re torn down.
Cherish news that is positive and interesting at the same time.
They should put in movie theaters and video arcades….oh wait, that was 40 years ago.
Man those were the good ole days weren’t they. hanging out at the arcade while your parents wandered around. Meeting up at orange julius maybe going to chi-chis maybe going to the movies after, awe man I miss those days so much. Playing on the escalator and trying out all the beds and recliners, the big book store with every book ever made it seemed even comicbooks lol great times. I miss our old mall.
How about schools or some sorts? Not elementary or high schools… but language schools? Hair stylist schools?
This was actually the original concept for malls. They were supposed to be places where you could get everything – a city center. Doctors, libraries, entertainment, exercise, schools. They were supposed to be this way.
Yep, and all of these have been done numerous times before. It’s a nice plus for a healthy mall, but won’t turn around one that’s already on its last legs. Buys owners more time though to figure out how to redevelop the land while milking the existing tenants long as they can while doing the bare minimum to keep the lights on.
I rather do everything online, got tired of people in general.
Facts. Its just a circle of stupidity. Id rather avoid.
Something like this will connect more people with their community and those around them, and then those same people will act less crazy lol
@Nick Thompson i find better deals online. Don’t have to worry about parking or someone breaking into my car. Getting sick from someone coughing without covering their mouth. Crazy people, pick Pockets or begging invalids. Over priced food.
One good thing is there is air conditioning but I have that at home sooooo nope ill buy online. That animal shelter is going to be filled because thats how they just are in general.
I think that’s a great idea. Malls have ample parking to accommodate a lot of people. It’s always sad to see vacant, wastes of space. We literally drove past a mall today that was closed and abandoned and I was telling my husband that that’s a great area to build some type of affordable apartments/condos or perhaps senior living.
“The rise of e-commerce” as the explanation for the demise of mall shopping is a red herring imo.
Malls were always expensive, where people pay premiums for stuff. Thats why they and the department stores are sinking, while the Wal-Marts and Dollar Trees are still relevant.
I’m selling online and sales on sites like Ebay are deader than ever. Nobody has the disposable money anymore like they did in the old days, we’re all saying it there. The U.S. middle class is vanishing, that’s the real story.
Good.
That’s actually exciting and thought-provoking. People need to get out, but shopping is not a social event, and it’s expensive. We need somewhere to go and get out and not spend a lot of money since Joe Biden crashed our economy and caused all that inflation and killed hopes of a brighter future. Life in America really sucks. People are afraid to spend money.
Don’t blame Joe Biden. He has been working with the federal reserve to increase interest rates slowly to bring inflation / greedflation to stop. He inherited Trump’s mess / Trump tax cuts on wealthy and tax hikes on middle class + working class, the trade war with China and the late+post pandemic economy/supply chain challenges.
Add a highrise tower full of apartments attached to the mall with key access, glass over some of the ceilings of the mall to let in more light make the indoors feel more like outdoors and I’m totally there. It would be great to be able to have so much indoor space on extremely hot, cold, or rainy days. Being able to walk from my apartment down to a convenience store in the mall, or go to an urgent care office in the mall etc. – basically turn it into an indoor, climate controlled village
I love this!! Keep it coming.
Online shopping should only be used when you can’t find something locally. People need to support the local community businesses mall and Main Street stores. Don’t fall into the trap of ordering everything online. Things online are often overpriced for what it is. Go for a walk and enjoy yourself spend the day at the mall.
Not really. Online I’m able to find the best deal with free shipping. Not Amazon. But actual stores in different states that have better prices then local stores. So I will never support my local when their prices are so high.
@careerwelder84 You find the best deal with free shipping, because all of those products are dropshipped from Chinese sellers or Alibaba, pirates or gougers who outright steal products or raid the shelves at dollar stores, flip those products online, and present themselves as “third party sellers.” Remember that the next time you get a “deal” online.
Yes. Almost all big name online retailers are drop shipping from Chinese sellers, Ali Baba hustlers or sketchy third party merchants.
@Stranded NYer i was talking about brick and mortar places that sell products. I have my guns shipped in from different states to mine and I pick up in store because my state everything is higher. Also car parts, some art work, I do pick up for my food and I grow fresh vegetables in my garden. There isn’t a reason to go to a mall or store really. Id rather use that time hiking fishing camping traveling etc. Some of us are born solely to be consumers and some of us buy stuff we need to live life. Thats why the first poster enjoys walking in stores looking at products
So many abandoned malls that are wasting away with plants invading it, flooding, and graffiti! I saw an article about an abandoned mall and somebody had thought, “why not just turn it into some apartments or a school/college that could open up some classes? Before its too late and get destroyed. A mall literally has the same floor plan as a college, just with open shops, food courts, and multiple floors.”
If the mall failed then the economy in the area is bad .. parents move so does future college students. Who’s going to fill up staff ?? . Saw it first hand in NC where all you see is abandoned factorys and closed shops
We need to heavily tax pet food. There are more pets than people willing to become furever pawrents
Considering how hard it is for families to get to theme parks , i’m surprised some malls , or parts of malls , haven’t been transformed into mini Disney and Universal theme parks.
Maybe they will. I think they should have stuff like bowling alleys, mini-aquariums, virtual reality venues, etc.
@Stranded NYer In Deadpool voice , ”I’m sorry Dave , I think holodecking the parking lot is forbiddeded.”
Brilliant. And a good news story.
Can they turn some spaces into apartments ? Multi concept buildings is the way to go to be more eco friendly. People not having to drive to get a lot of basic things . In Los Angeles they are looking to build a Costco which will be part of an apartment building .
Thanks Amazon for killing millions of jobs and businesses.
When will American workers do when AI takes 1/3 of all jobs?
Whats a “liebrary”?
❤
Speaking of transforming. How is NBC’s coverage of the Biden bribery investigation coming along?
FOREIGN BOT, MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.
Great idea!!
When I was living in India back in 2015, the smaller malls there were already beginning to make the transition. Expect to also start seeing motorcycle showrooms.
This is great!! A library in a mall is brilliant! Next turn the abandoned office buildings into low-income housing and we may just find away out of our impending dystopian doom. 🙌🏾☺️
This wasn’t why the mall was built.
This won’t last. We have a failed mall like that in my city. Place is always dead quiet. I only walk through it. Good luck.
It is a wild thought that maybe malls are dying more due to increased suburban sprawl, largely facilitated by urban blight and the Highway Trust Fund, which then incentivizes eCommerce. The woman said it best— “what will get people to leave their houses”
Exactly, malls are doing fine in Europe.
Add indoor parks maybe even a grocery store or farmers market. With that shelter an indoor dog park would be cool as well! Instead of just fast food do what Vegas does. Put nice restaurants inside. Not just rainforest cafe…
Obidens economy sucks for everyone
What has the Orange Julius become?
….toxic sludge.
This is a brilliant idea. I hope all states are going to do this.
“What makes people live their houses?”
I love malls, i was born in 1995…when i was young my parents took me to the mall and wed spend all day shopping and eating at the food court , i had so many good memories with my mom…you cant put a price on that.
Yes, online ordering is fine, but nothing beats the experience of actually walking through the Mall!
Good idea.
Some stuff I now see in malls look more like desperation to keep them from going down hill even more. An animal shelter in the mall may initially help a bit, but things may drop off, like other things a mall tries. Once everyone in the neighborhood has a cat, why go back to the shelter again. Cats usually live about 12 – 15 years. Visiting the mall once over 12-15 years won’t do much for business. If having a pet store in the mall didn’t save the mall, an animal shelter might not either.
An almost dead mall near me in NorCal has a library branch, DMV office, a roller skating rink an other business offices in place of closed retail stores. Very busy and useful space now.
Finally an uplifting story!
It’s what I have been wishing for. Malls should be entertainment focused now. Clothing stores are still necessary to actually try the clothes on, but I entertainment seems very profitable to me. Perhaps more than clothes
Once there was Main Street (mom and pop stores, restaurants, galleries, delis, walking and seeing friends and neighbors), then came chain store malls that killed Main Street (at least people were still walking, and meeting socially), then came the god-awful Wal-Mart, and Dollar stores that killed what was left of Main Street, and malls. Now we have fat, lazy, socially inept kids and adults ordering Amazon packages at home, so they barely have to get up from their Cheetos bag. Thank god for places like Carmel, and Montecito California that BAN those stores!! And luckily there’s still travel to wonderful, charming Europe!!
malls killed by anti vaxxers
This is amazing! I hope this trend continues! I can see stuff like bowling alleys, indoor playgrounds, etc. being a thing. And thank you, NBC NEWS, for reporting a story bound to inspire other municipalities!
Public Library! Who goes to the library?
I do. Save a bunch of money of free books!
Our mall is absolutely dead, nothing has worked and they have been trying for years. What will happen is they will eventually bulldoze it.
In short, are having trouble attracting top paying tenants. Too many non-retail tenants is generally a bad sign. As the ones mentioned in the news piece, none are unique. All have been tried numerous times before with often the end result being the same. More indoor malls will close leaving a smaller number of super malls, such as King of Prussia Mall in PA.
These transitions will only work in communities without you know who. Otherwise these new spaces will be trashed within days
I don’t like 🥷
We have a mall that needs rehab. They should rip it down and build a bunch of mom and pop retail shops intertwined with essential services and entertainment and put rentals on top. It’d be awesome.
put apartment units in malls that will bring a lot of customers
Exotic Dance Club. Poker Bar. Pool Hall. Greasy Spoon Diner. 🤫
There’s a large abandoned mall near my house and it’s basically brand new. Opened in 1990 closed in 2012ish. Sad to see it just sitting there rotting away. Not sure why they don’t redevelop it like how they did with the mall in this video.
This is exactly the opposite of what traditional urban planning and typical city hall politics call for. City planners hate the idea of remote work and suburban downtowns.
What? They have to compete? This is hilarious. Only the corporate media would report on how strange it is for a business to compete.
Indoor volleyball! And I’m sold
Funny how malls is Europe are doing just fine.
It’s because of good urban planning and not far flung car dependant infrastructure.
This is really smart….like most people I’ve stopped going to the malls to shop. But I still go to the library, gym, theater! It’ll bring in a lot more foot traffic for the stores that is still around!
There’s a mall by me where an old Sears is being turned into medical offices. It’s perfect because public transportation already goes there, making those doctors more accessible to more people. It’s such a great idea!
If all of this works to revitalise malls in the US properly for the 21st-century, then all the best to them, and all who wish to participate.👏🏻
💋💖💋💖😎
Grand téton comes from The french ” great nipple ”.
They have a cat petting zoo in the mall where I live. All up for adoption
Shoplifting you mean
