Every year, thousands of young Nepalese men endure gruelling physical training, punishing runs and relentless scrutiny for what they see as a chance of a lifetime – the opportunity to become a Gurkha soldier in the British Army.
Only 432 will make it.
For boys from remote mountain villages, it can be a pathway out of poverty – not just for them, but for their entire families.
But first, they must survive a brutal selection process.
Major Sandy Nightingale, who runs the recruitment process, adopts a no-holds-barred approach when telling the candidates what to expect.
“If you join the British Army Brigade of Gurkhas, you have to be prepared to sacrifice your life to protect the UK, your fellow soldiers and the Gurkhas Brigade,” he tells them.
Kamal Gurung, who comes from a family of farmers, has been training for this moment for years. He is desperate to help lift his family out of poverty and transform their lives in one of the world’s poorest countries.
“If I succeed, I’ll be able to give my family a normal life, and all the happiness they deserve. They’ll feel like their hard work finally paid off,” he says.
But will he make it through the punishing endurance tests and stringent medical examinations?
101 East follows Nepal’s latest hopeful recruits as they battle it out to see who has what it takes to join the legendary Gurkhas.

Is there anyway we can donate money towards Khadak and Kamal’s families?
Why not contact Aljazeera or Pochara British Gurkha Camp.
these guys are very valuable assets to the british crown and royal army, i noticed they regulate the number of gurkhas, maybe they dont to have more gurkhas just incase they decide to over throw the crown lol
When I first watched this on tv I was glued to it. This has to be one my favourite episodes on 101 east
Stop selling nepali youth
this is a joke. to get british passport they die? lol
Yep, they use poor guys in Nepal to kill and die for them
Lots of opportunities waiting for them and their families in the UK. Will acquire set skills they will be able to use when they retire from service. British passport so they fighting for their second country. Able to travel the world, good salary, training, pension, health care, retirement homes and other incentives. The devastating earthquake in 2015, British Gurkha engineers were sent there in Nepal and built schools and rebuilt damaged homes of retired Gurkhas. There are project such as providing running water, provide health checks and health care to local communities in poor areas. Provide medicines to retired Gurkhas. As always mentioned, most of these young men improve the lives of their families once they joined the British Army.
The hint must be the failed potential recruits were informed first, the successful ones the last to be informed. Kamal’s problem was confidence and should have pushed that last reserve energy to get the quickest time possible in the Duko race. I think that’s where he failed. Very pleased for Rohit, his mum and the whole family. They must be so proud – seen him in other Forces videos. More than a year now, I wonder what Gurkha branch he end up with.
intake 2022 im comin baby
did u get in?
True professionals..
I dont know why this channel is much better than others
Both, exhausting and exhilarating.
They are strong hindus
The story of the noble Gurkha people and the heroic contributions they have made to the British military has to be one of the most moving and unique of our times. The Brigade of the Gurkhas is legendary and highly respected around the world for its military prowess, fearlessness in battle, and above all, loyalty, discipline, and honor. This is what makes me so sad when I read about the discrimination that Gurkha troops have suffered and the lengths they have had to go to get equal pay, pensions, and even the right to live in the UK after their service. When I started watching the documentary, it seemed to me like it would a no-brainer that these troops would automatically qualify for citizenship. Apparently not. Yet they have been fighting for Britain for as long as the United States has been a Republic. Imagine that!
I couldn’t hold my tears 😢😢
Proud to be gorkhali💪
Respect for these young boys 💗
Listen voice 19:25 to 19:29
Kamal and Khadak, I hope you both succeed in life.
They both are in indian army😊
These guys look like Muay Thai fighters
After seeing this video out just wana share my thoughts too as many of boys especially from mongolian race being a lahure is a brand tag and most of them are so talented in every terms but at last dont get slected &think its the end but lemme tell you guys time generation has changed there are many more to get for & achieve for in life take lahure as an option if you get in its fine if not then you have others great things to get for in upcoming days :- after every dark night there is a hope of sushine too😊💪🏼
Nepalese people are very short and they seems to be like a kid. You can have look at the para commando . No one could defeat them in india. They are the real heroes of India.
My grandpa was a Gurkha <3
Kati dhukha gareko ho nameste ketaho… Soch badhaunu ani maintain garnu… Excise to Self know about…
At last. It makes me happy enough. And sad to.. ✌🙏go ahead nepali youngers. As im also going for selection 😊
I would like to see the British officers run with these candidates. I’d like to see how many of them could pass the standards.
They can serve in Nepal Army if they want.. but they don’t.. So they are COWARD. What a pity life
or Nepal army dont give them enough money
This tile only 0.5 %
This time only 0.5%
No doubt there is something special about nepalis.
Nepali workers are top priority here in India for carrying construction materials( no source of other transportation) to the site.
I never believe here also need money for selection
I could tell that just physically those two boys wouldn’t make it, despite their undoubted courage, strength, stamina etc. All thing being equal they will still choice the bigger physical boy, and shoulder width is a key factor.🙏😳
D best warrior on earth
🤣🤣watching him speak in nepali
It’s really good & awesome fitness the young boys
All this just to give better life for family. Moms are afraid because after failing some boys commit suicide because they are sad and couldn’t see their mom sad because of his failure. ☹ These are huge responsibility on young boys of their age. It’s hard for Nepali people. Those guys are signing up for army and to protect other by sacrificing themselves. They are literally crying to choose death’s path for happiness of their family. ☹
Thank you
Poor countries. One of motivation to joining British ARMY that can help big family
I’m a father of three boys and I cried watching this . Even for the ones that failed, we’re equally proud of you. May god bless you all and your families. 🙏🏻
❤️💖🔥🔥
❤

Join the AMERICAN ARMY
People. To train for the interests another Country!.. Nepal colony
Britain.. I am Shame for them.. I am Greek with my culture
Very different..
I tried 3 years to get selected in BA but unfortunately couldn’t make it.
All that hard training and sacrifice just goes in the vein at that moment when you are pulled out of the group and you step out of that gate.
But it was a wonderful experience and I am really proud that I tried and gave my best.
It’s not the test it’s the competition that makes it really intense.
One of the Guru Ji said that “If you fail don’t be disappointed, it’s not the end”.
To everyone who are able to get selected hats off to you and to those who fails/failed like me
ITS NOT THE END……… YOU ARE STILL TOO YOUNG TO GIVE UP .
After I failed I thought I was a failure but than I said to myself I deserve better. I went back to college and completed my studies. Now I am IT professional, we need to fail to succeed.
All the best to you young man!
why didn’t you just studied and go for programming at the first place – why did you join in to be selected in a profession of killing other people?!
as a software developer i can only say you found and joined the better part of humanity – the engineers, not the killers (;
I was happy for the boy it made It Because the last time he Failed he took it hard Shows how much that young man wanted this and I also felt for his mother watching her child go through the failure it is tradition at the At the Gurka selection that each young man gets to call their families four times during the process I wished they would’ve showed his mother when he was able to call her and tell her he got in I could picture His mother’s reaction would’ve been one of joy for her son do you know what all she saw him go through to get this
6 foot wall . Run , jump , strong press up , swing that left leg til the top ,another press up ,and your ‘re over .
Great soldiers ❤
The true men are more willing to fight and die for Britain than the British who don’t even sign up today. Many Brits lack high enough education to pass entrance exams today and are to lazy. The Brits fitness is also suspect due to them hooked on fast junk food, which contains way to much saturated fats that affect the body.
I have tears. I’ve spent time in Nepal. including Pokhara (brilliant Gurkha museum ), and I served with them on attachment. My love and admiration exceeds my powers of expression. NAMASTE.
Man i cry alot for those who are not selected 🥺
11:43 “This is so incredibly stressful, these boys have waited, some of them 3 years to get to this stage, to join the Gurkhas and this test could mean the end of their dreams” well I guess all university student can relate to this pressure.
The Gurkhas are incredibly well respected for their courage, not only by the British Army, but also by the vast majority of British citizens. Their exploits in war are legendary in the British Army. If accepted into the British Army, the life of that individual and their families are totally transformed and especially if the Gurkha is from a poor family. It is sad and very regrettable that only a small percentage of hopefuls make it every year, but if the UK could afford to, they would take many more each year and in 2020 the largest number for 30 years were accepted into the British Army, 400+ I believe. There has been criticism that the UK is depriving Nepal of it’s brightest and best young men, but the reality is often that there is very little chance of those individuals reaching their potential in Nepal, due to grinding poverty and many Gurkhas, after leaving the British army, go back to Nepal and help their local communities in ways that they could never have done if they had stayed in Nepal.
The hardest of the hard
NEPALI GORKHALI^_^ DONT MESS WID UR DAD..🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵💐 PEACE. JAI METAL 🙏🤘✌️🕊️🌋☣️☢️☣️☢️🙏🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵

wow sabaijana ko coment padhera kehi bolna man lagena manko dukha manmai 6
Once I saw a crying 18 years old guy. He is from a poor family in a village. No education, no job, no future. Recruiter picked me over him because I had masters degree.
They should have reliable medical centers so people don’t have to train so hard to get fit only to find out they have some medical imperfections
2:35 ‘British passport for the whole family’. So the parents and siblings can also come to the UK? Wow, that’s lifechanging 😲
Yes, they are sacrificing their life.
You mean mercenaries! I can’t believe they still OK to be mercenaries for the Britain.
Like what I always say, bring this program to the Philippines and I bet you every man and boy will not hesitate to be recruited to British Army, as long as there’s pay and opportunity to migrate of course.
Hard , very hard . Even the selection process . Such dedication to become a Gurkha . BRAVO .
⚔️🇮🇳⚔️🕉️🕉️🚩🚩
The preparation hasn’t been for nothing. So many intangibles.
No shame if you haven’t made it.
The criteria are extreme. Not even our military, firemen or police have to go through this.
‘Men of men’.
How much do they get monthly salary in British army service from the lowest rank?
SUPERMEN,LEGENDARY WARRIOR’S.I wish thier was 50000 for what may happen soon to the world.
ya’ll i feel so bad for Khadak i hope he’s in a better place now😭😭
not Kamal too😭😭
Gorkha ❤
I don’t know why but when I watch these documentaries about the Gurkhas, I feel like time flys by so fast. Proud to be a Nepalese. Will be a Gurkha one day.
Mighty Gurkhas
They should serve their own country… Why UK.? Strange..! 🙏🙏🙏🇧🇩
Vietcong > Gurks
The name “Gurkha” comes from the hill town of Gurkha from which the Nepalese kingdom had expanded.
The ranks have always been dominated by four ethnic groups, the Gurung and Magar from central Nepal, the Rai and Limbu from the east, who live in villages of impoverished hill farmers. The Victorians identified them as a “martial race”, perceiving in them particularly masculine qualities of toughness. Following the partition of India in 1947, an agreement between Nepal, India and Britain meant four Gurkha regiments from the Indian army were transferred to the British Army, eventually becoming the Gurkha Brigade.
Since then, the Gurkhas have loyally fought for the British all over the world, receiving 13 Victoria Crosses between them.
More than 200,000 fought in the two world wars, and in the past 50 years they have served in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Borneo, Cyprus, the Falklands, Kosovo and now in Iraq and Afghanistan.
They serve in a variety of roles, mainly in the infantry but with significant numbers of engineers, logisticians and signals specialists. But their numbers have been sharply reduced from a World War II peak of 112,000 men, and now stand at about 3,500.
During the two world wars 43,000 men lost their lives.
The Gurkhas are now based at Shorncliffe near Folkestone, Kent – but they do not become British citizens.
The soldiers are still selected from young men living in the hills of Nepal – with about 28,000 youths tackling the selection procedure for just over 200 places each year.
if only japan won midway and coral sea………………….
if only japan won midway and coral sea.

We never got a chance because of corona. I feel you khadka dai🔥. Don’t worry. There are other things in life. If only there wasn’t corona😌
These are GURKHAS.
That’s why China 🇨🇳 wants them and india just squandered their chance
good job
On a lighter note. One of the things that’s always impressed me when I see gurkaha recrutes is how nice their teeth all seem to be. White and straight. Put us Brit’s to shame. Lol.
3:05 irrelevant comparison
If passing the Harvard entry examinations is simpler than passing the British Gurkhas regiment exams, I will choose to enroll in Harvard. I expect it to be more exciting
one of best figther in the world
it feel so sad the tough and bravest one are taken by others
🎉🎉
Greet warriors. But I don’t understanding why they’re fighting for Engeland and their government. When Engeland treat them as their OWN foreign legion. Recruiting these young warriors to fight and die for England. Shame!!!!
Only a true defence aspirant know how it feels to b rejected 💔
Poor sods, all this work to then stag on the gate.
