Since 1980, most American workers have seen modest income growth, but income for the top 1% has grown much faster. Lindsey Reiser traveled to Ohio and Florida for Meet the Press Reports to hear from different families, sharing similar struggles, about what constitutes a living wage.

$1500? Bruh. I make double💀 that
we can thank this problem to people in america not knowing the true history, act of 1871 america became a corporation that is why we pay federal taxes, property taxes ,goes against the constitution. America is run since then by the bank of england, rothchild, rockefellar families they print paper money of no value and control us
Lol 4 kids, How about just have 1 of you cant afford it.
Every time I got to the grocery store it’s $100 easy for a family of 4. Eating out well over $70-$100 for 2 adults and 2 kids. Wait until AI gets into the work force, you think it’s bad now. Just wait.
Ford tried to raise his employees wages but the supreme court ruled at the time that shareholders getting money was more important than raising employees wages.
Maybe $3500 for a single individual but she has 4 boys! Something needs to be done.
Could it be that we are paying retirements programs for previous generations in form of pensions and stocks in the market and undercutting wages today?
The cost of living is too high for the pay people are getting.we are doomed.
Heart warming story of the business owner paying a buck over minimum wage and thinking he’s Nelson Mandela
This is your congress in action. Deficit spending is causing inflation. It is a very regressive stealth tax, and the people who benefit are the ones at the top of the money supply chain. Call your congressmen and tell them to stop the spending. Of course, they won’t care because they do not represent you anymore. They only listen to the people who are giving them kickbacks.
Imagine living outside your means then calling it someone else’s fault you have a home
@Be free people really act like it’s so hard. I know some people can’t afford it. But that’s 1000x less than the people who claim they can’t
It’s because she’s black, isn’t it? Be honest.
@Camry driver No it’s because shes a single mom and with low income. And if u dig her finances further she most likely didn’t create an escape plan from this low income trap wheel of life.
Don’t bring the race card as an escape goat.
@Be free Just say “welfare queen” we are tired of the dog whistles.
@befree9579 no it was because she’s black
Yes, YES there is!! 😡 Especially for government employees, like myself too! We are only paid once a month and the pay is horrible. For instance, I won’t get paid for July until the 31st. I have only received at $1 raise.
The majority of the people I know are working 2-3 jobs, one full time and 1-2 part time jobs.
She could get her CDL and make over 100k driving a truck for UPS
This was very well presented. And each one sharing was excellent in knowledge and truth..
Here in Florida I have multiple workers every day coming in to scrap their possessions because they are leaving the state. Just cried with and hugged a mom with 2 jobs whose landlord upped her rent by $500 a month. She said her son asked her what changed because they used to be able to do fun things. She said she cried in the car and decided it’s time to leave this state since there is no future here for workers. I completely agree! She is leaving Tuesday and already rented a better home for half the price in another state. This state is BROKEN!!!
That to rapid Theology is lie. Employers have already shrunk their workforce. We all are working short and underpaid. We are being killed by carrying the work load for three, four or more workers who are never hired or come to work but do nothing because they feel that it’s just easy to do the minimum or nothing and get the pay. All because the pay is not enough for what the job description requires..
That oil change is just as important as insurance, unless u don’t drive the car…
And credit card debt and high interest rates on debt, loans ect. There has to be a lower limit on these interest rates.
And buttmunching corpos/useless middle managers will continue to blame these people while continuing to make everything more expensive. Those clowns have probably never worked a manual labor job in their entire life.
Yeah jobs are not the same
No one deserves a living wage. You earn based on your skills. Period.
A living wage is such a dishonest narrative
Get ready for leftist propaganda
She gets the game of life! WORK > BILLS > PLAY! You cant play if you don’t pay your bills and you can’t pay your bills if you don’t work… if you don’t play the “Game of LIFE”, this is how you become HOMELESS!!!! 😢😢😢
Shocker. A liberal institute believes in a wages based on needs over skills.
Dang she works 3 jobs and struggles? I work one job in healthcare as a housekeeper and make $2,260 a month
$18.75 is what I make and I work 60 hrs a week and I can only make enough to do the bare minimum. No buying newvideo games no going to the movies no vacation no nothing. I cannot decrease my bills anymore then they are now.
start a business thats it!!!
Back then yeah, economy nowa days. Most businesses that are just starting out are already losing in the game already
mmmm ice cream, so goood 🍦 gang gang
Children are expensive so don’t have one if you can’t afford too it’s not like someone is forcing you to have one oh wait my bad
Amazon Drivers and DSP = $20+/hr
Amazon Cooperate employee = ?? 🤔
Parents need to impress upon their kids to develop skills, whether college or trade school or whatever. Over and over people in these articles are trying to make it on low skilled employment. That just isn’t going to work now like it did in the 50s.
She has four kids where are the father’s?At least she’s working some don’t even try but what are the kids father’s doing to help out.
It’s sad to see that $75,000-$120,000 salary range is still poverty money for NYShity! The days of one parent working and one parent taking care of the house is LONG over. Everyone capable of working, has to work just to make it. And even scarier, most of us are one paycheck away from disaster! The economy is basically running in the redline and it’s just a matter of time before it all comes crumbling down.
Thats what they want you to do, die working without earning anything youre just a number, it doesnt matter how hatd you work youll end up old and useless.
I hope Ms. Kanika Williams and her sons have a healthy and happy life.
Remember when most families were one income. They had lots of kids a car and a house, on one middle class income. Total capitalism is failing, the top 1% own as much wealth as the bottom 90%. Large corporations have more influence in our political system than the people do. A new research paper showed no correlation between what bills passed and public opinion on them. And yet another investigation by usa today showed corporations sending bills they wanted passed to senators and them being passed in verbatim sometimes and merely reworded in others. Health care, prescription costs we hear ever election how they will fix it. We allowed these corporations to become to large and hold to much influence.
The real disconnect is between the EXPECTATIONS of younger people about what is the standard of living they deserve, and what every generation before them has viewed as wealthy. Past administrations, mostly from one side of the political aisle made promises that everyone is entitled to consumer goods that were luxuries in the past, and facilitated bad decisions like student loans for useless degrees, and having multiple children without a father to contribute. Idiotic “policy experts” don’t ever admit that higher wages and deficit spending means everything costs more. Its a vicious cycle that socialists don’t seem to ever talk about.
I can see the need to raise minimum wage because of inflation but this will make it harder for the lower skilled and inexperienced to find jobs. I really wish there was a way to reduce the overall cost of living for everyone.
Wow did this resonate. Have had a government housing voucher for over 4 months but no available housing in my city & they won’t let us leave city because of a rule & we had to move out of a rental last Sept 2022 due to toxic black mold & me /my 2 children multi disabled. So we are stuck. Finally got a car was working gig jobs bouncing from family & friends homes. Car blew up now can’t work still no housing ; have food stamps but looking for a job even with a disability check but if I make a few $100 too much my house voucher & food stamps go & then I’m stuck in same situation not being able to afford a rental. It’s a vicious cycle that keeps people homeless & hopeless. I never ever thought we’d be in a situation like this. You take 1 step forward & 3 back. On the phone for hours /filling out loads of paperwork for it to “disappear” get lost etc. Something needs to change in this country. Once your in this situation it’s almost impossible to get out. There’s always some kind of red tape that keeps you poverty stricken.
It’s not uncommon for people nowadays to be balancing at least two or three jobs just to make ends meet. And that’s just trying to keep a roof over their heads, let alone how much time is spent working for people going for higher education.
It’s called wage theft
Cooks them dinner every night ….. has take out
its not like people don’t pay their taxes, but when everyone has to budget inflation, it is a trickle up affect!
Ceos of major corporations are making more than ever but definitely not the people who worked to get them there
It was sad to see but at my local grocery store i seen a lot of people clammered up around the CLEARANCE rack which was hardly used smh.
I have a lot to say about this video. First and foremost… kinika shouldn’t have had her kids. I can’t stress enough how much I feel that it is extremely irresponsible to have kids if you aren’t financially stable. $1500 a month for even a high school kid is low. Also her thinking it’s ok to live off of food stamps and Medicaid and help from the government is wrong and sets a horrible example for her kids. The other couple should not have had kids either but at least they’re not relying on the government. In my opinion, the living wage in this country should be $25 an hour (at the bare minimum) that allows the working force in this country to make at least close to a decent life for themselves but of course other factors determine how their lives will be like kids, location, etc…
Make it illegal to raise rent if you don’t have a raise
Geee it’s almost as if Andrew yang was onto something
Learn an skill, those jobs like uber doordash etc are modern slavery and wont get you anywhere..
Thats why a father is needed in the home too
The Most High told your stubborn fathers this would be the result when you choose to put a man king over you instead of God himself
Yep I make 30 a hour. I stell got to work 50 to 60 hours a week
Its harder when your single with no kids. They think you cant possibly starve if you dont have kids 😂
my only question is with the “single mother of 4” intro…where is the dad? that is the question that none of these stories answer. did she leave the dad for good reasons? was the dad an actual deadbeat dad? none of the sad stories answer the “why” question ever. i just want transparent news.
I’m homeless I’m working for minimum wage , I cant support myself
3.5 k a month isn’t enough , not when CEO, are making 500k a day .
U cant have inflation and not have inflated min in minimum wage ,
40 hours a week is actually too much , its supposed to be 30 hours , every minimum wage employee has to be able to spend the same amout of time with their family
does the 1st woman not get child support??
This has been well known and discussed for for decades at this point. It’s safe to assume the powers that be aren’t actually going to do anything fix issue(s). That said, if there’s no plans for revolution, why keep talking about the same old same old? The time for talking was over quite literally decades ago. It’s past time for action.
I make 330k and work from home. Didn’t have a dollar to my name 6 years ago. Hard work will take your far in this country. People just want everything handed to them but refuse to work for it
It’s not about lack of effort, its about lack of opportunities and access to them. And even so, not everyone can do the same thing in life, imagine if there was nobody to work all the minimum wage and low paying jobs out there, how quickly everything would fall apart.
There is a real lie about inflation in news I’m done with groceries up 1 to. 2 % when its 200 300% Wesson oil was $2.28 now 5.89 y’all do the math
This lady is such a HUGE inspiration.
Not working full time, spreading legs when she shouldnt have is an inspiration to you? my goodness.
Don’t come usa a scam
Where is dad and what are his contributions to this family?
Corporate greed is to blame
Ppl looked at me crazy when i said they are going to find a way to get their money back from all those pandemice relief programs…everybody feeling it its sad i looked in my phone from from 2019 a $150 worth of grocery covered my whole table now that same $150 only gets me 4 grocery bags
They key things is do you need a big house some people have a two bedroom condo and living great with not troubles first of all what’s your credit score is it over 800 see that is very important you must have a great credit score 💳💳🧉💵🥭🏝👍⌚️🦺🛍😎
I would also ask if the father of Tamika’s children are paying child care? There are so many single mothers and fathers who struggle to raise the kids without financial help from the other parent.
On March 9, 2023, the Biden-Harris Administration submitted to Congress a proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Budget request of $842 billion for the Department of Defense (DoD), an increase of $26 billion over FY 2023 levels and $100 billion more than FY 2022.
I refuse to do gig work— why work myself to death just to have a dew more things. I make do with less— it sucks, but I ain’t trying to be a slave to the system
This is why I’m saving to live in a country overseas. America, is no longer a financial option for the average Joe to have any chance of a life of prosperity.
I’ve been wondering this my whole life… What if you don’t have kids, what if you don’t have that motivator? What if your back isn’t against the wall? What are you supposed to do? Just be enraged and insane every day?? This reality makes no sense.
I’m mildly intelligent at best. To be fair. Probably make the same financial mistakes others make.
I got a vasectomy in ’08. At 25, as a guy …..
No kids.
Live in small towns. Live in apartments, not condos that call themselves apartments. More affordable. Not affordable. More affordable.
Read a few books on minimalism, corporations, and advertising, read about consumption.
I own two pens, and one marker.
So I don’t buy 50 boxes of just pens..
I have one of each object I have.
Not 20 handbags and 6 snow shovels
hobbies
I don’t have 14 items for hobbies collecting dust.
The Dusty treadmill with clothes hanging on it… Right…..
You have kids, the entire society is set up for you to buy crap for your kids… Aisles in stores, mass media, shopping. Etc.
Have kids, I support that, but it can be helpful to be mindful about the consumption industrial complex in our society. To attempt to avoid it when you want to… Key here is want to.
Can’t knock others opinions on here on either side. Alot of it is truth. But knowing a small fraction of how to not buy stuff or be more picky choosey is a good small start
Why are we the people letting the dinosaurs speak for us?
she doing very like .dave ramsey baby steps. see ramseysolutions
I REMEMBER when i was younger i had 4 part time jobs . i had to use a planer calender to make sure i did not miss any . and this was when part pay was 3.25 hr was very rough. next to no sleeep.
They’re socially engineering a society where we cannot possibly survive without government assistance. Learn to grow your own foods, hunt and preserve meals. Reliance on a corrupt system will be your demise. You will be denied assistance the moment you don’t go along with the narrative. And the narrative is you will own nothing and not question it. Cut the middleman out.
The most shocking thing about this video is that they actually have houses and not just apt 6.6 bcs that’s all we can bearly afford. (in tx out minimum is still 7.25 and most jobs that are available pay that. Or up to 10) ;we only have restaurant and housekeeping jobs 😭(I did a vocational school 9months not working innit bcs can’t pay for a certification exam ) so restaurants yeah 6.6 it sucks
DO NOT HAVE KIDS YOU CANT AFFORD!!!
The wait for rental assistance is 10 years
I am moving to a tent city where I can afford rent. I will eat at the local soup kitchen.
wwoww
The government should tax corporations and use the money to subsidize more fair wages for small business employees. There’s no reason why small business owners like this guy should be basically condoning keeping wages low for the sake of his business and claiming he’d have to make cuts instead of people like him fighting against the greed of corporations that drive the cruelty.
MILITARY BUILT NOTHING ANYWHERE IN AMERICA, MANUFACTURE NOTHING, PRODUCE NOTHING, WASTED TRILLIONS AND TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS NO DEFENSE, HYPERINFLATION MILITARY PERSONNEL FAULT, SHUTDOWN MILITARY FAULT, THEY PRODUCE NOTHING IN AMERICA
Average hourly rate $25 AUD, today in Australia. Women with kids get paid more on welfare than average person working on min wage,. Most things look cheaper in America compared to Australia, for eg i can buy a usa fender strat guitars approx $500-$600 usa. in Australia same guitars $1600-$2000.
Decades of unlimited war spending, bailouts for banks, free money for Pfizer, and $50B for Ukraine most recently. And NBC wants you to believe that small companies and a living wage are the cause of inflation.
It is not right at all !
If she’s only bringing home $1,600 per month, she’s probably working around 20 hours per week. Most of us can’t afford to support ourselves at that rate. I would prefer to hear from one of the working class women I know who work 40+ hours per week, with no benefits or health insurance, living on a thin razor’s edge from hunger and homelessness. This article could have been so much better.
Corporations are corrupt and are undependable employers due to the discriminatory practices they employ without legal repercussion.
The reason why employers are against wage increases is because it hurts their ridiculously large profit margins. Usury law needs to be reinstated to curb corporate greed…
HOW IN THE WORLD DID THEY FORGET WHAT SHE IS PAID IN CHILD SUPPORT
I’m now living in that canyon where I don’t qualify for assistance. I understand there is no incentive to ever leave that safety bubble, that there is no bridging the gap to the other side. In my experience, more food goes bad in the fridges of my friends on food stamps than I can afford to buy a month on my own. I don’t qualify for low income housing or rental assistance, meanwhile my rent has gone up $300 in two years, which is easily $600 more than it was a decade ago. Something has got to give. Because our employers certainly aren’t willing to. Government needs to implement rent caps bc right now landlords look at the inflated mortgage payments and go “people are willing to pay that” and bump up rent, even though mortgage rates are double what they were pre-pandemic. Truth is, no, that’s WHY I’m renting. As soon as mortgages drop below my rent again I am getting a house but that time is not right now. It’s suffocating!
We are very fortunate that my mother buys the kids shoes, coats, clothes, socks and underwear…..and helps with extras like dance class, karate and camps….without mom s generosity….I don’t know what we d do….a lot less. And here is the thing, clothes, shoes and a few extras are what should be low average.
WELCOME TO SYSTEMIC RACISM.. THE CAUSE OF THE WEALTH GAP
People in the US are fortunate. Things are bad in South Africa, one can’t even secure a job or even a car. So having just one job is being fortunate. I’m not saying it’s okay to work 3 jobs and not being able to make a decent living
I work two jobs and still cant afford my bills. I went to school have a bachelor’s degree in business and still cant get a job that provides a livable wage.
I live in Finland. Our inflation (preceeded by a lockdown to protect the elderly) has killed our economy, and the government does nothing to aid families with kids. Our pensioners got three raises to their government-paid pensions during a 6 month time period, families got nothing. Our newest government revealed that all of the extra euros (so-called “child raises”) in unemployed parents’ financial aid are being removed, dropping thousands of families into straight poverty. Everyone except pensioners will have their housing benefits reduced. This is a hoax, and nothing more- the boomers are at it again.
Also young parents are working their butts off, but living in small, cramped apartments and cannot afford anything extra. When I was a kid in the 80’s and 90’s, we had a house in a nice area and two cars, summer cabin, you name it. Only my dad worked (mom stayed at home).
