Maybe they didn’t know there were bodies in the water because this happened a couple weeks ago. Maybe they also wanted their proceeds to go to a good cause. Maybe they are victims of this tragedy and want to go back to a sense of normalcy. You people calling them deplorable and horrible things about them need to take a look at yourself for being judgemental.

Maui, do what Seaside, OR did at the beginning of the pandemic when folks from the city decided that the start of quarantine was the perfect time to go to the beach. Mayor gave them 12 hours to get out or be arrested. Have no mercy. Get those rude tourists out.
The state of Hawaii’s gross product is tourism. Very expensive tourism at that. People save and plan for years to take a trip there. Hotels and airfare are paid for months in advance. Not all of Maui was burned. While I would agree that going into the Lahaina area to take pictures or see what’s happening is wrong and it is definitely disrespectful to the locals that are hurting, a tourist several miles away from that area swimming in the water is not. Keep in mind, those luxury resort hotels are not going to give their rooms away. They are booked up months and even years ahead. They are not going to refund tourism dollars. Those tourist had nothing to do with that fire. I know people from Lahaina are hurting right now, but the world doesn’t stop because you are. All of America are shocked and grieving with you, but life goes on.
Blood boiling, angry and disgusted. But not surprised by the tourists, lack of empathy, or respect. To the people of Hawaii sending blessings of renewal healing compassion and strength. May those who cause pain, to those suffering, know karma returns. 3 fold.

I don’t say this to be insensitive or disrespectful of how devastating this is, but where else are they going to go? They’re already there, already paid thousands and made plans months ago to visit Maui
People would criticize them if they were on land because that’s where the people burned. No one is going to want to just sit in their hotel rooms until it’s time to go home if there is somewhere safe to go. I would think it would be nice to get your mind off the depressing landscape and look into the ocean. There were also hurricane winds, so I’m sure there are plenty of trees down where the fires didn’t reach or other cautions resulting from this? So maybe the water isn’t a terrible idea to find a way to enjoy what’s left.
I couldn’t do that though if there were clearly floating bodies nearby, but I have a feeling people weren’t snorkeling and jumping in with dead bodies in their sight. But if they were to find someone, doesn’t that help search and rescue resources and give another family closure?
The air quality there has to be a nightmare as well, and aside from causing respiratory issues- that can really affect your eyes and skin. The water could help keep them clean instead of surrounded by pm2.5.
There weren’t any wildfires anywhere near in my state recently, but the smoke that came in all the way from Canada took a toll on my indoor air quality in my home, and ruined all of my air filters. Staying inside was awful for a while after the smoke cleared outside, and I’m the type of person who has over $1,000 of air purifiers in their 2 bedroom apartment. Hawaii has some of the best air quality in the world, so I don’t know how much they invest on cleaning their air to begin with, you know?
I am just trying to offer a different perspective. I know it’s still upsetting for those living there and trying to cope, and I don’t blame anyone for what they’re feeling over this. It’s not wrong for people to have these feelings, but I think it helps to acknowledge a different point of view, even if we can’t help how we feel- especially when going through grief. It has to be really hard and I can not imagine.

I have compassion for people who have lost everything. It is heartbreaking. But remember this, it is a tourist destination and that his how the majority of your people on the island make a living. Hopefully Maui/Hawaii will now turn a corner in regards to tourism and tourists. There are way too many beautiful places being destroyed by excessive amounts of people. Cruses cause a huge amount of destruction leaving practically no gain for these communities. Tourism is obviously beneficial in a lot of ways but it needs to be controlled now. To save native people and places for future generations to enjoy.

When the Tsunami hit in Indonesia back in 2011 I think about? In the newspaper they showed a front page photograph of a Tourist couple sunbathing on the beach lounge seats while all the devastation of the Tsunami was around them at a beach, they were called Gouls.
