If they sign a contract to join the military, no, they are not mercenaries. If they are hired to work for the military, but not officially join it, then yes, they are mercenaries. The foreign legion of the UAF is an official part of the Ukrainian military, making them volunteer soldiers, not mercenaries

Wagners group is also multi cultural. When Ruzzia invaded they sent 300k troops, then conscripted another 250k and this year announced another 300k troops to be conscribed.

I had a classmate from college who served in the 🇳🇿 New Zealand Army from 2011 to 2019 and whilst in the NZ Army, he’s been deployed to 🇮🇶 Iraq and 🇹🇱 East Timor.
After his time in the army, he did try to get back into civilian work, had trouble holding a job especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic and when the war in 🇺🇦 Ukraine broke out last year in 2022, he travelled to Ukraine on May last year to volunteer and fight for Ukraine’s International Legion fighting in January after his two four-month contracts finished.
When he came back to NZ, he did say that there was a lot of issues with random foreign criminals serving in the International Legion, corruption and being sent to fight in some of the most dangerous engagements but overall he’s glad that he did it, he still believes in Ukraine’s fight to keep its independence and he still feels as though what he did in Ukraine was far more meaningful than anything he did whilst deployed to Iraq or East Timor.
I like how he was honest and frank about the issues of his experience fighting in Ukraine.
What did he do when he was deployed to Iraq that was any different from what he did in Ukraine?
@JTN If I remember correctly, he was deployed to Iraqi in 2014 back when he was in the NZ Army and mostly just provided training to Iraqi security forces, as well as help to plan military operations against ISIS.
He never actually did any actual fighting with any actual enemies whilst in the NZ Army but in Ukraine, he was able to do actual fighting against the Russians and pro-Russian rebels.
Hope he will be survive againts wagner . But wait until Putin release their beast. Wagner just part of it.

Dude they are mercenaries … the leaks form the Pentagon suggests that Ukraine suffered 135-150k casualties … that is a lot for a tiny country like Ukraine. They simply don’t have able bodied replacements to refresh their ranks, so they would have to resort to mercenaries. What I do find interesting, is that Russia has been saying that they have been fighting NATO since the beginning of the war, which makes me wonder if Ukrainians were ever able to have enough volunteers in the first place.

Can someone without combat experience join? Ever since the war started, I’ve had an overwhelming urge to join the fight. Yes I know that I will most likely not be coming back alive, but I still want to go regardless.
You should look into other ways to volunteer. Do you have medical experience? Explanation not needed. Any sort of labor/trade experience? Areas of Ukraine affected by the war need rebuilding, power restored, etc. The fight takes many different forms. So think about how you can bring the knowledge and experience you already have into the fight.
