You began this report saying “hostages” were exchanged for “prisoners”. That is problematic, since prisoners are seen as criminals and many Palestinians held/released are not criminals. Israel uses “Administrative detention”, a set of laws (illegal under some int’l laws) to hold Palestinian civilians who are never charged with a crime, are never told why they’re held (sometimes for years or decades), and are never given a court trial. They are hostages held by Israel. Please choose words wisely. Hostages were exchanged for hostages & prisoners.

Throughout my ten years of working at Al Jazeera, I’ve never watched a program more consistently than this one, and the work these past few weeks has been exceptionally compelling. I know people here do not want to hear this but Israel will do what Israel does no matter how people elsewhere feel about it. Added to that, there is now a witch hunt underway at the University of Basel involving scholarship of Palestinian history and the use of the terms “settler colonialism” and “Jewish supremacy”, despite their usage in Israel by organizations such as B’Tselem among others, and their factual basis. The power of the pro-Israel lobbies in Switzerland appears to match that of those lobbies in the US. Their power has increased tremendously since Netanyahu first took office.
