“One nation, solemnly promised to a second nation, the country of a third.” That’s how one writer famously described the Balfour Declaration – the declaration by then-British Foreign Minister Arthur Balfour, on November 2, 1917, that said, “His Majesty’s government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people. […]”
One hundred years later, the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians continues, with no sign of any sort of resolution. So, how central was the Balfour Declaration to later developments and what role did Britain play subsequently? And should the declaration be celebrated as the first step towards the establishment of the state of Israel and self-determination for the Jewish people, or decried as an act of betrayal by the British, who had also promised Palestine to the Arabs?
“The problem…with the Balfour Declaration is that whatever explanations we give, none of them justifies doing what was done in a country which was already inhabited,” says Ghada Karmi a British-Palestinian author and lecturer at Exeter University’s Institute of Arab and Islamic studies. “That’s the fundamental flaw in the Balfour Declaration. That is the fundamental issue in this whole story. That you’re dealing with a country with an indigenous population. So, you cannot go and plant another people in such a country. It’s very simple.”
“Yes, there were 700,000 Palestinian Arabs…but there were five and a half million desperate Jews who did not enjoy the citizenship rights of Western Europe,” says Martin Kramer an Israeli-American historian and founding president of Shalem College in Jerusalem. “If you say that Palestine is not their home, then what is their home? They are the eternal wanderers.”
For British journalist and former Middle East editor for the Guardian, Ian Black, the opposing views of the Balfour Declaration are irreconcilable.
“What’s fascinating about it is that those two views are completely irreconcilable, which is why people who support Israel, Israelis, Zionists, many Jews are celebrating, and most Palestinians are indeed mourning and protesting…And in a way, it’s an encapsulation of the deadlock at the heart of the continuing crisis,” says Black, who is also the author of a new book on the history of the Israel-Palestine conflict since the Balfour declaration, Enemies and Neighbours: Arabs and Jews in Palestine and Israel, 1917-2017.
In this UpFront special, we explore the centennial of the Balfour Declaration and discuss whether its legacy is one of salvation, injustice or betrayal.

The woman lives in the UK a country who she hates Has a very good job and is safe and secure Why isn’t she there in Palestine ?
John Howard thats like saying why dont all Jews go to Israel and get out of New York City.
The difference is the Jews in New York City are safe there and love the country. This woman lives in the UK despite despising the Brits. She knows she is safe to loathe them because it tolerates even vermin like her . Plus money, welfare, safety and security are very good incentives to stay and be able to spit in the face of the people who protect her and family and have the right to say what she wants. Can you imagine me or a Jew being allowed to say what I want in palestine?
so she should just forget about the injustices that were done to her ancestors just because she lives a comfortable life in the uk? what sort of retarded logic is that?!

Israel was established in the land of Israel, there was no Palestinian state in the region, nor in the intere world, nor in the history of the world. The jewish people are the indegenous people of Israel and not the arabs who call them selves Palestinians.
Where you foreigners emigrate to?
As an Israeli I say, what ever the Palestinians say or feel about the Balfour declaration is non of my concern. My family was saved from the Nazis thanks to the British. He is now alive and I am now alive because the British opened the gates of Palestine to Jewish immigration. His relatives in Europe were all killed.
Saved, how? After the War? NSDAP signed agreement with Zionists before the war, so if they ended in Palestine before the War that was due Harvara.
We saved our lives let’s take other people lives and lands
@@rayyanabualia4500 too bad 90% of that land is jewish archeological evidence that is so overwhelming its obvious. Palestinians dont even have as much historical proof even come close to the jews. Jews has the shekel currency for thousand of years in that land. Many kings that ruled the land and clear cut evidence of their kingdoms. Palestinians never had even 1 ruler in history to back up their claim and very little evidence of arabic palestinian scriptures. While israel is covered in ancient hebrew scriptures and jewish archeological proof. From the city of david in jerusalem to the city of Tzfat. Its amazing to me that palestinians actually dont know their own history. They dont have an answer to why they dont know any palestinian rulers of the land. They never really existed. They were never an ancient civilization like the jews and not even a modern one today. So to answer your question. Jews are exactly where they have always been in their history. In the land of Judea that why they call them Jews!

This woman has hit the nail on the head “It was someone else’s country”. Yes, the British had a mandate – the land did not ‘belong’ to the Arabs who lived there. Prior to the Mandate, the land was controlled by Turkey. and the indigenous population still did not ‘own’ their country.
As the land was divided in half how did this compromise the arabs who lived there….most of whom went to Jordan. Why does Karmi not not dispute the creation of any other sovereign state by The League of Nations.
When Jordan controlled the religious rights, access was restricted at least under Israeli control the religious sites are open to all.
Please do not listen to ‘indigenous’ or ‘native’ description: Most people’s families who now live on the West Bank came from Transjordan and those that live in Gaza originally came from Egypt.
Aaliyah Nasreen Yes, some do. Some come from the USA. Many come from Arab countries such as Yemen, Iran, Iraq etc. because they were thrown out. Others come from Africa, from where they too were expelled. Please read a history book and study this subject before you respond with nonsense. Many thanks.
@khaldoun sleiman I think you misunderstood! The Levantine Arabs who lived in what was Ottoman Palestine were given over 50% of the land and this was renamed as Transjordan and subsequently The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The remaining area was mandated by the British who then carved up the remaining land – half to Levantine Arabs and half to Jews. The Jews accepted this, the Arabs did not. I agree that the entire land should not have been mandated after WWI but it was and we can not turn back time. The only way to solve the solution is surely to think ahead. Karmi is a bitter old woman who forgets her own ‘truths’ and will use aggression and lies to promulgate her world vision. Please listen to some of them on “Intelligence Squared” and then read her biography! As Judge Judy says, “If you tell the truth, you don’t need a good memory!”. Sadly, she suffers from an amnesia of the truth.
This woman is disingenuous as 1.25 million Israeli Arabs who live in Greater Israel have full rights. Those that live in PA/Hamas controlled areas are living a wretched existence. But is that Israel’s fault? All that money in aid sent to help the Arabs has gone to purchase arms against….Israel – instead of building an infrastructure to help life the Arab population out of poverty. BTW – There is no such thing as a Palestinian, which is a false narrative and a fake construct. If the population of Gaza and West Bank are Palestinians by virtue that they are the progeny of those who lived in the Mandate area between 45-47, then progeny of all the Jews who lived there at that time must also be Palestinians!
The israeli-arab who didn’t leave because they didn’t have to leave in 48 has it better than any other Arab country in general Israel is the best thing that ever happened to the Arabs living there
Go to my FB page and I have something that explains Israel since I made the amazing discovery of the grand amnesty. Anxiety is actually a political entity because it governs language and THOUGHT. As a political entity, there is the political correctness of anxiety. Because the political correctness of anxiety is the conventional wisdom, it has become a deity to people, and what Israel is actually doing is setting up the causality that will give them justification to attack, as it does everywhere from inside the family home to US deepstate foriegn policy to corporate wall st getting the result of getting bailed out trillions after ruining the middle class. This alone replicates how Israel causes offence and when the reaction comes massive attack follows. Anxiety heavily promotes self interest. Anxiety compels one to prevail over others. Anxiety has the compulsion to control what is being said. Anxiety continuously is adamant the sky is falling. Anxiety is actually a form of dementia. And it is in the group setting that the political correctness of anxiety can exist. Because it is an instinctively intuited thing, and this is how a group of disconnected individuals can gravitate to the same understanding. This is the real genesis of Jewish religious belief that they are god’s chosen. Its all because of the freak accident of consciousness finding itself here in the physical realm. It is the event of birth that ‘culture shocks’ anxiety into existence – for the baby that does not possess language. The baby thinks with political optics and this is why there is no answer to this situation or the social calamities in the worlds societies. The problems all have their genesis in an anxiety, and people have only ever promoted anxiety as wisdom when trying to say anything about it, and this pattern of circular logic empowers the cause of the problem, reinforcing the beliefs of the cause and entrenching this logic as conventional wisdom. Anxiety the political entity is the cause of the problem as well as the reason for the lack of solutions. Because conventional wisdom is that anxiety is virtuous. Example – Religion replicates the function of anxiety as it events in the mind, and has the same political aspiration as anxiety, because the political optics of the jewish world view- religion- is that anxiety is virtuous. Objectivity dictates that Conflict is Israels happy place.

In 1916 Germany was winning the war ,the U-boats had control of the shipping lanes and the Brits were running out of supplies . Germany offers a status quo ante basis peace treaty in which the Brits are seriously considering . The war profiteers , Zionist are obviously against this peace business so they talk to the war cabinet in London ” You can win this war ! we can get America in on your side if you secure us a homeland in Palestine.”
America enters the war and the Zionist demands the guarantee in writing. With America on the western front the Brits and French take the Ottoman Empire.
Palestinians should have accepted the partition terms, just like the Jews accepted.
We have 70 years of history showing conclusively that it’s the Palestinians made a mistake by refusing the partition and starting a war with a brand new Jewish state.

Balfour is completely irrelevant. The British all but gave up on Balfour in the 1940s. Where are the Iraqi Jews, Egyptian Jews, Syrian Jews, Tunisian Jews…? They were all kicked out (or compelled to leave) just for being Jewish.

Israelis of modern times who have occupied the majority of what was once Palestine are not at all related to the Jews of Biblical times , but rather they are Ashkenazi Jews . The Ashkenazim are descended from the ancient Khazarian Empire from southern Russia and the Caucuses region . These Ashkenazi people are not Semitic at all . The conversion of the Khazars took place in the 8 th century AD , when they adopted Judaism in order to avoid conflict with the pagan Russ Viking tribes to the north , the Mongols to the east , the Islamic caliphates to the south and the recently Christianized Slavic peoples to the west . This conversion was done primarily for reasons of commerce as the Khazar lands were situated astride the Black Sea region where the white slave trade of Slavic peoples was conducted between the Mongols / Tatars who captured the slaves / Slavs ( origin of the word ) and the Islamic Sultans who purchased the white Slavic captives – the Jewish Khazars were the brokers and profiteers of this slave trade .
When the Khazar Empire was absorbed under the Russian Empire after it had adopted the Eastern Orthodox Faith , these Khazars disbursed throughout Russia and Eastern Europe , eventually working their way into Western Europe where they were associated with business and commerce , primarily as merchants , bankers / usurers , jewelers ( again , look at the word origin ) and political advisors to kings ( just like little Jared Kushner is to Trump ) . It was Khazars who were the architects of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1917 , with the financial assistance of their brethren on Wall Street —- the dynamic continues to this day . The Yiddish language of the Ashkenazi is an amalgam of the ancient Khazar tongue blended with Hebrew , Slavic and German – thereby representative of the morphing of the language in accordance with the migrations westwards into the heart of Europe . No Semitic connection whatsoever .
The only true Semitic Jews remaining on earth today , the ones with a legitimate connection to the Biblical epics of the Exodus or to the two destructions of Solomon’s Temple ( by the Babylonians and the Romans , respectively ) , or to the epic of Jesus Christ , are the Sephardic Jews . The Sephardim are also known as the Mediterranean Jews , as their diaspora spread around the regions of the Mediterranean in accordance with the ancient Roman Provinces . Spain , Portugal , Italy , Greece , Turkey , Palestine , Syria and North Africa all had thriving Jewish communities of Sephardic peoples . Smaller Sephardic communities also existed in places like Iraq , Iran and Armenia . Today the Sephardim constitute around just 7 % of the Jewish population world wide , and have largely been marginalized and silenced by the Ashkenazim .
The creation of the State of Israel began with the British via The Balfour Declaration during World War I ( as England was by then firmly in the stranglehold of the Zionist Banking House of Rothschild ) . Moses Hess and Theodor Herzl , two Ashkenazi Jews , were the fathers of modern Zionism , which is a political movement and financial agenda , having nothing at all to do with the Judaic Faith . ( This topic should be researched by the likes of Mr. Lowry before they spout – off about gobbledygook they know nothing about ) . World War II provided the catalyst for the settlement of Ashkenazi Jews into Palestine ( former Ottoman Turkish territory , subsequently taken over by the British / Rothschilds after WWI ) by way of the Holocaust ( Hebrew for Burnt Offering ) . The Banking House of Rothschild ( who owns the US Federal Reserve Bank ) financed the creation of Israel as a beachhead for the access and commerce of middle east oil ( as the internal combustion engine took hold in the aftermath of WWI ) and to establish the beachhead for World War III . ( Suggested reading ; Exodus , by Leon Uris )
So then , to those who cheer the decision to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem , be careful what you are elated over , as this move may well trigger a tsunami of events that potentially could change the world as you have known it . Everything is connected .
IS = Isis , ancient Egyptian Lunar Goddess – later renamed The Virgin Mary

The Ottoman Empire was fighting between itself. The empire fell. Syria lost a war with France. Lower Syria (palestine, Mandatory Palestine by the British after World War 1) was conceded.
It was run by the British and Transjordan. The United Nations created Israel after World War 2 and a Palestinian State was rejected. There was a lot of hostility and ideas/plans up till that point.
The Roman Empire conquered Israel/Judea. The Christians took over later. Went back and forth with Islam/ The 1st Crusade. Now the Jews are back. All the descendants of Abraham. All promised to his descendents. They are all there now. There were times when they all lived in peace.

Problems today all lead to the British! Be it Palestine, Cyprus, India etc
Uk was almost defeated by Germany in 1916, so the Zionists went to the War Cabinet in London and offered to bring USA into the war, Palestine for them would be the price, simple.
Listen to Benjamin Freedman’ s speech in 1961.
i don t like this martin guy. horrible man and stupid.
Both 3 debaters are forgetting a crucial fact. The Zionist movement was a very opportunistic movement in the sense of grabbing the opportunity. The only reason why the Zionists accepted partition was because they knew the Arabs would refuse. It was not part of a plan to share. It was a plan to gain momentum and legitimize the expulsion of Palestinians from their villages, homes, cities and lands. It was Ben Gurion who openly stated that a viable Jewish state would need the vast majority of the land and at least 80 of the population. If there was a willingness to share, they would have respected the boundaries of the territories awarded to them in the partition plan. And they would have respected the existence of the Arab population in these areas. In stead they expelled and made sure there was nothing to come back to. Hundreds of villages and all cities were already ethnically cleansed.
Very, very good insight.
Ghada Karmi hits every nail on the head.
1 thing I’d like to add: the question: why Palestine?
In the 1900’s, the zionists were indeed playing with the idea of creating their own state.
But they considered several options. Some places in south america even.
In my view, the only solution now is to relocate the zionists to another place; like a scarsely populated state in the US, since the US is the biggest supporter of israel.
If we leave things to possible solutions like ‘equal rights’ or ‘two states in Pälestine’, that is not going to happen.
It’s clear now that the zionists want to kill off every Palestinian so they have the country to themselves. Exactly like what happened to the native indians in the US.
Divide and conquer was a strategy to break up the Ottoman Empire. The Balfour declaration was also used to promise establishment of Arab states idependent of Turkey.
Instead of spending billions on bombs with money barrowed from China, the U.S. could purchase land for the ejected people to establish a palestinian state.
This Kramer with his 5-1/2 million Jews in desperate straits in Russia, this is pure propaganda. It’s a work-around well thought out in advance to HIDE the fact that Stalin gave the Jews a homeland of their own in 1928. The existence of Birobidzhan is to be hidden by the Zionist thieves whose real motives in stealing Palestine included its location as a political and military center of the world; their Freemasonic wish to rebuild Solomon’s Temple on the site of Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem to herald the Jews’ long planned world government; the desire expressed in 1947 by Jews to confiscate the massive oil reserves of the region; and today, since the 1960s, we can add the desire to exterminate the Palestinians of Gaza to build Ben Gurion’s canal to compete with Suez. These are grand designs that have nothing to do with poor oppressed Jews in the so-called “Pale of Settlement” which is not the same thing as Birobidzhan, a Jewish homeland, national language: Yiddish.
No, Mr. Kramer. Without the Mandate, without the Balfour Declaration, “most of those Jews” (who freely went to Palestine because of it) would not have “died”, they could have gone to their homeland, Birobidzhan. But today, thanks to the Balfour Declaration, it’s the innocent Palestinians who are dead, whose rights nobody has bothered to defend, least of all the corrupt British government, which ridiculously promised that they would suffer “no prejudice”. Clearly, no such statement could have been taken seriously.
No, Mr. Kramer. It is an illusion and a perversion to compare the real mass slaughter of innocent Palestinians perpetrated by the Jews in hundreds of brutal massacres to drive them from their homes in 1948, with the IMAGINARY mass “death” of 450,000 Jews who emigrated to Palestine.
It is a perversion and a deception because that “reasoning” of yours (to use the term loosely) necessarily extends to 75 years of brutal massacres and dispossession of the Palestinians, as if it were a fair trade to “save the lives” of 450,000 Jews and their brutal descendants. You are like the infamous Rabbi Yaacov Perrin who stated that even 1 million Arabs “are not worth a Jewish fingernail.” You are saying (while pretending it’s unfortunate) that the lives and rights of Palestinians have no value compared to the lives of Jews. You are, in short, a Jewish supremacist.
