Tribes, wars, colonisation, empire, rebellion, independence and reconstruction – this is the compelling history of the Gulf state of Oman, from the 16th century to the present day.
Oman began as a trading nation but was then colonised by the Portuguese. Local Omani leaders later expelled the Europeans and went on to use their own powerful navy to build an empire that, at its peak, stretched from the Arabian Gulf halfway down the coast of East Africa. But the British then arrived in the region and used their own considerable naval power to gain control of the Gulf route to India.
The plot then thickened as Britain’s deals with the sheikhs on the northern coast caused them to separate from Oman itself – and ultimately led to these Trucial States forming the UAE a century later.
Oman played an important role in the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and is sometimes known as “the Switzerland of the Gulf” because of its neutrality.
This documentary takes us up to the death of Sultan Qaboos in 2020, his succession by Sultan Haitham and the appointment of the new Crown Prince of Oman in January 2021.

Oman historians have produced a historical narrative of the country history. But in this series of documentaries omission easily noticed no questions about trading economics warfare throughout human caused conflicts. To make the history line’s more authentic please be realistic and truest to yourself add more about the Atlantic slave trades to some profiteering and some descendants of that legacy’s still grasping lives painful memoirs inflicting up on them in today’s world 🌎 as the whole world witnessed the death of George Floyd murdered sags.

20 minutes in and no mention of the East African slave trade for which the Omani were responsible, yet one of the commentators claimed that the Portuguese occupation of Oman was the biggest human tragedy in history (or words to that effect), curious.
Mistake1, it’s called the Persian Gulf. The Iranians should called the Arabian Sea the Persian Sea in retaliation
Sultanate of Oman
It is a country that was born since ancient times and was called the country of copper
Ancient historians portrayed it as one of the oldest lands in which man lived
Oman was named throughout its historical stages by four names
The country of copper and the land of the poor during the era of the Messenger Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, and it was also called Majan and Mazoon
Oman gained its independence in 1655 after the Portuguese were expelled
It is the oldest Arab country to gain its independence, followed by the Republic of Egypt, which gained its independence in 1922
The Sultanate of Oman faced several wars, including:
Against the Portuguese and they were expelled from the Arabian Peninsula and even chased across the African and Indian coasts during the reign of Sultan Said bin Sultan ….
Against the Persians, they were expelled from the Omani coast under the leadership of Sultan Ahmed bin Said
Against Britain in Zanzibar
Also the Green Mountain War, which was a civil war during the time of Sultan Said bin Taimur, father of Sultan Qaboos bin Said
Finally, the last war was against the communists in Dhofar in 1970, led by Field Marshal Qaboos bin Said, which ended in his favour.
Oman is the third oldest monarchy in the world throughout history
It was founded in 751 AD by Imam Al-Julandi bin Masoud
Oman was an empire in the 17th century, founded by Sultan Ahmed bin Said in 1744 and included several countries, including
Zanzibar, Kenya, Mombasa, Uganda, Kilwa, Gwadar, Pakistan, Baluchistan, the Emirates, all the coasts of the Gulf countries, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in which the Ya’ariba built their palace in Riyadh.. It demolished the palace after its independence.
Oman throughout its ancient history was ruled by several Omani royal families
The era of Al-Julandi bin Masoud and his sons
The Nabhanites
Al-Ya’ariba
And finally, Al Said, who ruled from 1744 until now
It is considered the longest ruling family in the Arab world and has the title of Sultan, which is the second highest political house after the Emperor
The first Arab ambassador to the United States of America was an Omani
And the first Arab president to visit Britain was Omani, Sultan Taimur bin Faisal
The only president that Queen Elizabeth received at the airport was Sultan Qaboos bin Said
This is due to his high status as a sultan and became emperor after completing 50 years of rule…. If you want more information about Oman, you should visit this country
Oman is beautiful and kind people

It was nice visiting there by road from the UAE. But had problems when I told that I came from Kuwait. That the taxi drivers charged their currency as Kuwaiti dinars until I got help from locals actually to resolve this issue. Not all was nice people but that gave a bad impression to the country.
Oman only had control of Hafun and small area around the northern tip of the Somali coast. In the map they showing as if they had control of Mogadishu, Merca, Kismayo. Which isn’t the case. Seems like a lot of exaggeration on how much territory and area on the Somali coast they controlled. During the major Somali states were the Ajuran, HIraab and Geledi sultanate.
Their DNA is 90% similar to Somalis. Could Omanis come from Somalia also?
Probably, as humanity started in east Africa.
Oman sounds like a powerful country; what it’s been through and brilliantly survived is a wonder. Its beauty and climate almost makes me want to visit the Middle East. Tku.
I lived here as a very young kid. My earliest memories are here. Deserts, mountains, the beach, very well maintained infrastructure and a large guest worker community that didn’t really mix with the locals is what I remember.
Please let us all move forward together. The invitation remained.

To me, it doesn’t matter who rules Oman. For me, it’s strictly business. My Home is full of Omani Frankincense. The Highest Quality in the World. As an American, I would fight to protect Oman simply for the spice trade. America has it’s own Oil. We do not produce Frankincense. American Citizen……Sultan Green Hajari is not cheap!
There’s better frankincense from Somalia, who supply it to the Roman Vatican Church even.

Nice documentary, but there are a lot of gaps to be explored. That’s actually a good thing.
One of the oldest known copper mines is in Oman and some amazing geology, lots of hominid and ancient human history there too obviously hence the copper mining. Makes sense as the natural coastal route from Africa to rest of the world. You could see the Middle East from tip of Africa, so I imagine they crossed there too not just at the Sinai land bridge. Plus sea level was way lower during height of ice age so maybe it was connected by land anyways.
Al Jazeera these doc series are super interesting, plz translate everything in English for nom arabic speakers.
Somalia was never ruled by Oman, in fact, the sultan of Oman paid tribute to the Somali sultan
Great history lessons about oman…
It’s interesting to contemplate that the expansion into east Africa was very profitable in the selling of African slaves especially by the Omanis this slave trade went on until 1909 . There needs to be a great deal more examination if the role of Muslim slave traders in this time
1700s 1800s: any coastal city through which merchants ships passed by charged a small levy as they passed the territorial waters. When the British merchant ships were asked to pay the levy/tax as their ships passed by Julfar , after trading with India and beyond, the British refused. Then when their ships were attacked by the Qawasim tribes, the British called them ‘pirates’ amd justified their naval attacks on them!

Arab and Muslim countries do better under kings and sheiks than politicians
Don’t say all east Africa(only Kenya and Zanzibar), we somalis kicked them out of Mogadishu because they used to enslave blacks from central africa and bring them to our sultanate in southern jubba regions . They also attracted Portuguese colonial barbarians to attack our sultanate ,which we again defeated the Portuguese in war. Oman sultanate was weak colonial lover and hated ottoman empire. The are descendants of khawarji armies.
39:41 What complete nonesence, she is refrancing the Dhofar Rebellion which was far from being a tribalist revolte led by th British, it is the opposite. It was an emancipatory Marxist armd struggle for the liberation of the Persian Gulf region, esp the southren cost of Oman. The rise of arab nationalism, the popularity of Nasser and the looting of Omans wealth by the UK is what led to the aspiration of the ppl of Oman to have a better life. This armed movement was defeated bc of the British, Pakistani, Iranian military assiatnce to the medieval rule of the House of Busaid in Oman. it was this Rebellion which forced the UK to install Qaboos as a new ruler who had to modernize his outdated and underdeveloped country in order to legitimize his power grab from his father and to quell the Rebellion which lasted for more than 10 yrs, It is a huge part of history and Aljazeera casually eased it from this supposed documentary, shame on them.
Portuguese ppl came to my country as well. In that time, they supressed natives and established a colony here. It was made by plundering the riches of my beautiful country. There were blodshed and suffering as well. Tough times! Our ancestors had a really tough time. It’s part of our history, I think most of us don’t hold a grudge towards them. It was so long ago. Today we are free and we found happiness besides everything. Even with a dark past, we as the sons of those terrors have a choice to live in peace. I Hope y’all can find your peace. Cheers from Brazil!
Unless you are indigenous you probably have Portuguese blood in you anyway 😂. Bro, you ARE the colonization. Brazil wasn’t invaded because Brazil didn’t even exist: it was created. By the mere fact that you say that it is clear that you still hold a grudge.😂
0:13 … To whichever Arab sheiklet pays for Al Jazeera : Let me correct you, since most of your people can’t read or write: It is called the PERSIAN Gulf. I love Oman very much. I am originally from East Africa and was fortunate this summer to visit Fort Jesus in the coastal Mombasa where guides have given us the history of the Turkish conquest, the Portuguese invasion, the British empire and how the Oman Arabs who have enlisted the support of the Baluchi warriors from Pakistan have defeated this great empires who have enslaved the population . The remnants of the occupation is still present at the Fort including the body of one of the famous Portuguese general. My kids enjoyed the history and subsequent independence of Kenya.

Are Somalis sane or are they deliberately lying?? And the fraud of history. All those countries were subject to Omani rule and were Omani colonies.. As a true people, there were not many Omanis, but the presidents and sultans of those countries were ruled by Omanis, not the ridiculous comments that do not cure your anger.. It’s interesting that they say that we (the portuguese) colonised them. We never view and were never taught that Oman was a portuguese colony, only that we established trading and strategic ports along the coast. Besides that the sheikh of Muscat was allied with the portuguese. I have no clue why they are saying the portuguese were brutal, there is no information about that anywhere.
It’s Ottoman propaganda

As a Portuguese our presence in the Arabe and indian ocean are not much spoken and the same goes to southeast Asia. We mostly talk about Moçambique, Goa, Diu and Macau. This demonstates the kind of state that can come about without western colonial interference. We wonder why people behave in conflict driven politics like Hamas or Hezbollah, but these organizations formed in the wake of colonial oppression in which the peoples in the occupied lands have not outlived their hatred of the colonizers or continued acts of colonization.
BTW, The people original of the region settled in Eridu around 5460 BCE. Within the historic literature are recognized the Dilmun civilization. As Eridu was kind of a port city, As was Bad Tibera and Ur, the were oriented to trade with Dilmun civilization which had apparently multiple settlements beyond its primary city on Bahrain, so that its likely that port settlements popped up once trade began to grow in the persian Gulf. Dilmun pops up in the mythic literature in the Epic of Gilgamesh as the place were the immortal atrahaisis lived.
