Every year, an estimated 400 families are devastated by the sudden death of a toddler or young child. Now, an NYU study published in the medical journal Neurology on sudden unexplained death in children found evidence of febrile seizures in some of the cases. NBC News’ Kate Snow spoke with a family impacted, and has more details on the findings of the study.

So the “smoking gun” was just a possibility link to seizures

So what are the answers? I watched this and am not understanding the point. Just a bunch of play on my emotions. This kid was 1. Did he just get his vaccines? What are other precipitating factors. I am so sorry for your loss and it is so sad. My daughter goes through epileptic seizures and she is taking medicine for it and she is 19 months. I found out about them when she was 4 months and I felt like something was wrong and I am glad I said something. Doctors brush some of these things off like they are nothing but sometimes it is.

Yep. 2 children in our family had febrile seizures days after their 12 month shots. It wasn’t until the second child 2 years later had theirs that their parents put 2 and 2 together. The children didn’t even have fevers…. by the grace of God their parents were in the room to witness and the seizures lasted SO LONG they continued in the ambulance, for both children 2 years apart!

Are there multiple reasons for this tragedy because This raises questions my niece aged 6 weeks died of ‘cot death’ in 1977. She’d never had a seizure. All we ever heard is that it could have been a virus. But anything that helps prevent infant death is incredible.
And new fear unlocked. I baby is about to be 9 months old and I have been terrified of SIDS. We have been so careful. I have been getting excited about him turning 1 since the chance of SIDS greatly decreases by age 1. Now I’m afraid of this.

My daughter a few of these seizures when she was a toddler too, we are blessed she did indeed outgrow them.
Our daughter had sudden random choking from acid reflux for the first 12 months of life. Someone was awake with her at all times even when she slept. It was incredibly hard and required 3 adults to care for her, but in the end she survived. I think it’s the only sure way to avoid these sudden deaths.
Omg. My first child had this as well!! Literally whenever she was laying, even at an incline, she would spit up, choke, and not be able to move air(had a lot of GI issues even though she was breastfed). I was so sleep deprived and scared, battling PPD with OCD. I literally could not lay her down. I bought expensive devices that would keep her upright for the first 4 months of her life and held her for sleeping. The doctors would not listen to my concerns and pleas for help. 😢😢 As soon as she gained upper body strength, I let her sleep on her tummy and that helped ALOT.
Vaccines. Its undeniable. If you want to vaccinate wait until your children are older. It overloads their bodies with heavy metals and it’s too much. 💔💔💔

My Aunt Lorene died before she was a year old from SIDS. She just went to sleep and never woke up. It’s a shame, she would be turning 55 this year. I hope a cure for SIDS is in the cards for 2024, because no one should ever have to lose someone so young and no one should have to die so young.
What medicine does the hospitals gave the mpther or the toddlers? There might be a reason why this happens?
Im sure there are multiple causes but i csn list several of the hep b DTaP, all those combos like pediarix etc.

Just heartbreaking. Two things I can’t understand: How is any seizure normal? And why would you not monitor your child or have them sleep in the same room with you, especially when you know they have a condition. My heart breaks for this family 😢
My daughter had a febrile seizure from the Hep B vaccine! When we took her to the hospital they checked her out and said she was fine. My husband and I took turns watching her 24-7 for a long time after that. She’s okay now. More research needs to be done. My heart brakes for these parents.
That’s the biggest fear of every mom right there. My babies always love en covering their face to fall asleep, and I was always there to uncover their face because I was terrified they’d never wake up.

My Mama heart just breaks for them 🙁 My daughter had what they called a BRUE (Brief Resolved Unexplained Event) when she was less than 2 years old. Sept 2021. I had stayed up late to do some canning and something on the monitor we had caught my attention. I went in there and she was bluish and not breathing and I somehow got her to breathe and there was never an explanation for it. It never happened again, but I believe had I not gotten to her that she would have died. She was my rainbow baby after 15 years of losses/infertility and I cannot/will not imagine that scenario. Husband stayed up all night watching her that night. We bought the owlet the next day. The Owlet allowed me to relax enough to sleep. I also joke that canning saved my daughter’s life. My husband has actually complained that night how late we were staying up… he has never complained again. She’s 4 now and perfectly healthy. I just wish I knew WTH happened to her that night and why.

It’s taken me a year to start and give away things that my daughter would have used. She was stillborn at 36 weeks. I think of her everyday and my heartbreaks for you. Regardless we trust medical professionals and their advice. This family did too.
I wish more than anything that they were clear with their concerns. I realise now that medical staff believed I wasn’t eating enough. I didn’t know I was underweight. Because my daughter wasn’t gaining weight, she couldn’t. She was only on the 4th percentile when she was born. Communication is important. I really felt that their extra blood tests and scans would have said everything. But apparently scans do not show the umbilical cord. It was wrapped 3 times around her neck. Due to this tension, the cord could not work properly. She couldn’t get the nutrients from me she needed. She was perfectly healthy but died. I still try to explain to my daughter that her sister died. She won’t wake up. 💔

This is really really impactful to me. I’m a child neurologist and I routinely reassure parents that febrile seizures are “The one you want to have.” Because while things like this can happen… More long-term harm comes from every other kind ON AVERAGE. The issue is my heart breaks for anyone who is the exception to the rule. This is awful and that sweet little boy suffered from something that is unexpected but presumably slightly preventable.
The issue is if the pendulum swings the other way and people start getting those O2 sat monitors… Those cause harm as well. When owlette came out with those they were very a popular gift for a new parent. The issue is that they have a lot of false positives which lead to unnecessary tests which have let people to die as well. They also carry a risk of false negatives where they’re just not making good contact. Even the professional grade ones that we have in the hospital don’t work super great, especially on babies. The official policy of the American Academy of pediatrics is to generally advise against parents using those devices. However, in light of This publication’s showing that a seizure was what caused sudden infant death… Part of me wonders whether maybe for those with known history of febrile seizures It might make sense?
The issue with everything in medicine is a matter of statistics. Number needed to treat and number needed to harm. With monitors across the board the number needed to harm is lower than the number needed to treat. But maybe someone can show for sure that in those with known febrile seizures That ratio flips?
Definitely something I’m going to be talking to my colleagues about.

My son was 10 months old and healthy. No fever or anything. I am glad that I didn’t have to see his death on camera, but I do want to know what happened. I saw a study a couple years ago that suggested a certain enzyme (or lack thereof) could be a likely culprit, too.
It probably has to do something with all of those shots that they’re given at birth without the parents awareness and/or consent.

How would they know she had a fever? She didn’t have one when she went to bed and she was already cold when they found her. This is a case of regular seizures. Common side effect of vaxines. The cause is acknowledged at 4:13. Brought to you by Pfizer. Even for febrile seizures, the cause is the same. Rarely do you get a fever so high with regular germs. You need something to boost the immune response.

Parents don’t know to read the fine print on the information packets, that they are supposed to report adverse events if something happens within a couple weeks of getting a shot, so no one makes the connection…. I know from personal experience…

The key is co sleeping. Either you co sleep or you put the baby in a bassinet near your bed. This doesn’t happen in cultures that practice co sleeping. You get tiny baby beds that you can put on your bed. And you won’t squish your baby.
I wish we would also teach parents the difference between SIDS and death from unsafe sleep practices. These deaths are often counted as the same reasoning, which is not right, and kind of insulting to people who actually have lost their children to this neurological issue.

Missed infections that linger til it overwhelms the body and leads to a febrile seizure, if caught early enough and treated appropriately may improve outcomes. In my experience as a neonatal nurse, I have to be the eyes, ears and mouth of each of my premie babies because they are unable to express their pain and discomfort or advocate for themselves, just like the infant child. Febrile seizure is likely caused by a missed infection that has overwhelmed the body and expresses itself as a seizure.

I had a mattress alarm that was supposed to sound when my daughter quit breathing. It was scary because it did go off once.
As a parent of a child with epilepsy, this is terrifying!
I remember when my niece would have them. Her little face would go purple and she never made a sound. The fear is unlike anything I’ve ever felt. The dispatcher just kept saying, “blow in her face, blow in her face”. But it will always haunt me to think about what would have happened if she were alone. Has it happened while she was alone before? Did we get lucky on both occasions? That sweet girl is a teenager now.

I think parents should be reminded to continue to raise concerns about your child’s seizures and don’t be afraid to be proactive about discussing them with your pediatrician or other medical providers. My parents rushed me to the hospital at 3 months old because I was having seizures, and they turned out to be anything but normal – I was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis and was hospitalized for a long time(I can still find some of the IV scars in my hands if I’m looking closely). I’m extremely lucky to be here 31 years later with no resulting brain damage, as the particular type of meningitis is one of the leading causes of cerebral palsy.
its covid, the pandemic is literally still happening and raging through daycares and schools. This shouldnt surprise anyone, as tragic as it is.
The scariest thing a new parent worries about. I just remember being hyper aware of odd noises and things on those baby monitors for my boys. It was scary because SIDS couldn’t be explained.
I always co sleep/ semi bedshare in a safe way so i always know what is going on and the socks I have for both my kids.

My son spent 49 days in the NICU after his premature birth. My wife and I were extremely worried about SIDS after discharge, so we considered buying one of these devices to monitor him during sleep. Our neonatologist informed us that these devices are not proven and these companies prey upon parents in our situation. He was vehemently against it, stating that in many cases parents want to get them for peace of mind, but in reality the constant monitoring increases stress and anxiety. Truth is sometimes terrible things happen that you can’t prevent. I have to say, I am glad we did not purchase one of these devices.
Ah, he was such a sweet baby; Seizures are not ok, no, they are not normal. There’s always a risk of a child dying from one.
We dealt with this. My son was born in 2017. From his first month he breathed through his mouth, and drooled excessively. He snored as well, and eventually was diagnosed w/ sleep apnea. His nose & mouth leaked so much, we went through 35-42 bibs a day. He got sick almost every month.
When he was 12 mos -16 mos old he had at least 1 “febrile seizure” every month. But he was always conscious. He would cry, “no, no, no” right before each episode. And of course cried during them. I was able to take a short video in only one circumstance. 5, different doctors watched it. No one could say for certain it was a febrile seizure. 2 different EKG studies could not prove a real seizure. Because they weren’t conducted close enough to one of his seizures. How was I supposed to plan that!? I was offered epilepsy medicine for him. Despite not having ‘real proof,’ of what kind of seizure he was having.
All that to say. At 16 months of age, he was approved for ear tubes put in, adenoids & tonsils out because of his sleep apnea, open mouth breathing his whole life, constant sickness, & excessive drooling. The hope was, that clearing out his sinuses/throat etc. would mean his temperature wouldn’t spike so fast when he got sick, because he would drain efficiently. His MD said that’s when kids (who get febrile seizures) get seizures; when their temp would spike rapidly.
After the surgery, the surgeon said his adenoids were the biggest she had ever seen on a child his age.
Sure enough, thank God, my son’s health issues cleared up after surgery. He never had a seizure again. His temperature didn’t spike when he got sick, and eventually, a year later, stopped mouth breathing.
All that to share…we were never told Febrile Seizures have a 4% chance of causing death. The seizures were downplayed for sure. We were never told about monitoring devices. And the first 2 docs who said, “they are harmless, and kids grow out of them.” Told us to wait, and he’ll grow out of them.
After watching this video I am so glad we pursued his surgery. We didn’t have to wait & see! We had found the root of his spiking fevers.

17 months my goodness. My little one is 19 months and I was starting to think we are getting out of the woods. We have a Nanit which brought great comfort. Now I’m wondering if I should give the owlet (right?) consideration for the next one.
