Space X successfully launched its Starship spacecraft, which will eventually carry Americans back to the moon. Meanwhile, NASA introduced the newest astronauts, some of whom could make the trip to the moon. NBC News’ Tom Costello reports.

The largest demographic groups in technical and management roles in the aerospace industry are white and then Asian men… yet we do not see that properly reflected here. Seems racist and sexist to me. I thought the leadership should always reflect the demographics of the employees? 🤔

There won’t be astronauts on board until the Starship has flown at least 2 dozen times. Meaning 2026 earliest.

Yes, there were no astronauts on board and there won’t be astronauts on board for some time. SpaceX are going to test, and test, and test, and test, and iterate after each one to perfectly fine tune Starship before it’s ready for human flight. Maybe if NASA had done the same thing with the space shuttle we wouldn’t have had two shuttles blow up and put humans in danger as a result.

what i dont get is that it will take so long to land on the moon when supposedly they did it in such a short time back in the 60s with less technology?

It’s easy when your only goal is to stick a flag in the ground and mug to the camera…the purpose for all this is to allow a permanent human presence on the moon at the Lunar South Pole with the infrastructure to eventually allow commercial independence…Apollo was a sprint…this is a marathon…could we take three smaller space x rockets add a small third stage and land on the earth facing side…essentially a publicity stunt…yeah…and gain what? This is much more important…to settle the moon permanently…and do it right…we are also putting the lunanet in place next year for communications and navigation for government and commercial missions with Earth and all over the lunar surface … this isn’t the same as Apollo…I watched Apollo 17 as a very young child…finally going back.
Well the technology developed back then has been gone for decades. We basically have to reinvent the weel. Except this time our budget is much lower than in the late 60s. Thankfully current program began it’s development over a decade ago and we’re much closer to returning to the Moon than at any time in the last 50 years.
Scrapped blueprints, but most importantly the goal isn’t really just getting back on the moon. It’s establishing ourselves on other planetary bodies for a tiny fracture of the cost of the Apollo missions. Thus, will be sustainable long-term, unlike those older missions.

I hear yah. It always bugged me when people kept saying it was a terrible idea because it blew up on the 1st and 2nd test. Like, that’s what tests are for!
@@ArmstrongandTumbler I honestly believe that 80% or more of the public (and humanity at large) has no idea that tests are expected to fail, explode, or otherwise end up catastrophic. They’re conditioned from a bizarre expectation of magical perfection. No idea why, but it could be that all explosions are considered “failures” from their perspectives.

This is not the right approach to build heavy lift vehicles.
Why? It’s so far proven to be the most successful, cost efficient & capable lift vehicle.
@MrNeonz-fk2ky it has not yet flown and landed successfully even once. Simply put, they have misjudged a lot of things. They will struggle to land this. The margins are way too narrow.
@@curio78 Incorrect, it’s landed plenty of times on previous non-orbital test flights, what it needs to do now is land following re-entry. So far, it’s been successful in everything but that, improving at a rate faster than any NASA project in history. There’s a reason why NASA chose it for the Artemis program, I think I’ll take their judgement over anything else.
@@MrNeonz-fk2ky They barely landed once with just a hop flight. ONCE that too not convincingly with no payload. pay attention to the failures causes in those landings. The fundamental issue is weight and size, in comparison to structural strength.

@@curio78 On starships first orbital test flight it began tumbling out of control, despite the supersonic speeds the entire, colossal structure held together until being remotely detonated. Prior to that they’ve landed 3 times successfully during the “hop” test flights without issue. So I’m not sure what “failures” you’re referring to, they’ve been checking off the boxes test by test & making progress at a rate never before seen in the spaceflight industry. With what they’ve so far been able to do & have already achieved in the last flight I wouldn’t be surprised if they were completely successful on their next launch. Not sure what you’re on about.
