The pilot of a single-engine plane was forced to crash-land in the woods in Mendocino County, California, after losing power mid-flight. The pilot deployed a rocket-powered parachute which saved the lives of him, his partner and his two-year-old daughter who were on board.

I remembered when those were new.
No amount of money, fame or blackmail would get me on a small plane.
I got on one to go from one island to another, it was nonstop shaking for an hour. Never will do that again!
No amount of money, fame or blackmail would get me on a Boeing plane.
Dude, same.
I’ve been flying in light aircraft since I was 6 years old. I’m now 56 and in all those years I’ve had a couple of close calls but that’s life. When your time is up it’s up it doesn’t matter what you’re doing.
@@2nd2nun702I went to flight school in the 90s in the C150s but I no longer have any desire for general aviation, the novelty wore off so yea it’s become an unnecessary risk for me. In flight school a C150 crashed killing a fellow instructor and student, and the last time I went flying was a single engine Otter and we lost the engine at cruise altitude and did a forced landing in a remote lake, so that’s enough for me.
Wow, amazing!
Maryland suburbs of Washington D.C.local news have reported at least 2 collisions with survivors while flying Cirrus SR 22.
Watch the 1989 movie “The Gods Must Be Crazy II” to see a parachute plane in action. Not exactly a new invention.
And?
Great movies: The Gods Must Be Crazy 1 &2. Seem like just shallow comedies at first, but the entire meaning of life and human evolution is explained in the subtext of those films.
Those cutes are brilliant!
Plane parachutes are amazing and are a brilliant innovation.
@PacificForage I love the SR-22, it’s a fantastic plane. There is no debate , it saves lives when the chute is deployed in an appropriate emergency situation. I would love to install a functioning parachute system in my miniature version. 👍✈️
Yes, but only small planes can use them any large jet, even an executive jet is too big and heavy for a parachute.
ah you just need a couple more@@jo2832

Wow plane parachutes, amazing technology 😮
Stupid news guy called the parachute system “so simple”. other guy says, no training needed.. yea, well you do need to know what altitude is effective for chute deployment, and range of airspeeds. of all of the training needed to fly the airplane safely, well, then you are probably much smarter than an average news anchor. just sad and comical at same time.

Ohhh get outta here. A plane crashing and you think ots gunshots? Tell us you know nothing about gunshots without telling us.
Why does media always pick those people? Goodness.
It’s not actually *that* crazy of a statement. The rocket that deploys the parachute makes a really loud bang when it goes off. This is one of the reasons that there are several videos around now of the planes coming down under the parachute — people hear the bang and look up to see what the heck that was.
Where’s the Boeing news??? Looks like nbc is burying and doing favors.
Do they have that for helicopters?
Wouldn’t the rotor blades cut the strings? Maybe they could get something to inflate at the bottom to cushion the fall.
Helicopters don’t need it, they have autorotation

That’s pretty amazing, didn’t know planes now had the option to deploy a parachute when about to crash.
Been a thing for the last 25 years now
I’ve been saying all plane seats should have parachutes!!
Try convincing Boeing to do that. 😂
@@jospenner9503 “If its Boeing, I aint going”
cool want to pay 5000 bucks more on your ticket?
How do you plan on training Some old person who gets up to use the bathroom every ten minutes. To try and use a parachute. You obviously don’t understand flying. It’s cheaper for the passengers to die
So, does the passenger pull a lever to eject the seat out of the plane and then another lever to deploy the chute? Or, how would that work?
can it fly again?
About 30% of the Cirrus aircraft that have deployed the parachute are flying again. It really depends on the environment where the plane comes down, how easily the plane can be moved from that location, whether there was damage during the landing, etc. The first plane that they talked about in this story came down into trees and that’s what caused the damage you saw with the tail broken off. That plane won’t be repaired.
So many plane crashes…this is why you should fly commercial since last deadly crash was years ago
maybe you should know what aviation term “commercial” is…there is no such thing as a commercial airplane
@@cmritchie04 Obviously he meant Part 121 but few people know that level of detail.
How do you think people become “commercial pilots?” You spend years flying in small piston planes before you can even get hired by an airline.
Too groovy!
These planes have parachutes now? Wow.
For the last 25-30 years yeah..
yeah. the ones that landed in the Ocean didnt fair so well.
Actually there have been a couple of successful CAPS deployments over water. One of the early deployments of the system was in the Caribbean. Another more recently occurred near Hawaii. Everybody onboard was fine in both cases.
@@MikeKobb Thanks to you and me and a few others here, we are setting the record straight for all the liars who are just making things up.
Crazy how so many parachutes deploy lately
They must be handing out these pilot licenses like candy
Please get out of our skies and book a real flight from real pilots 🙄
The plane in Washington suffered a catastrophic engine failure. Nothing to do with the pilots. I don’t know if we know yet about the one in California.
I have bever heard of a plane parachute before! Why dont more of them have this? I supoosed the shute would need to massive past a certain size.
Hugely expensive to buy and maintain! Depends where you fly as well, if you’ve got clear flat terrain in range you would LAND the plane regardless of having a chute. But if you’re over extensive forest or something with no possibility of landing this system may well make the difference.
Sr 22 get it
Chutes are massively underused.
Sounds like all small planes should have parachutes!
Would be prohibitively expensive for people who want to own a small plane
@@videogameplayer0552 if you can afford a small private plane, I bet you could find the money.
@@TrumpisaRapist. Completely false. These parachutes can cost like an extra 20 grand. Someone who has 50k to spend on a small plane might not be able to afford to spend 70k.
There not all all planes… because there cheap thats all. Profits over safety
Just glad the family is safe and okay because of this innovative gadget💪
It is not a bad idea unless the pilot relies on it to get them out of trouble, rather than relying on the fundamentals to stay out of trouble.
Most crashes (in my experience, working in General Aviation as an avionics tech) give little warning. One of our customers was a new pilot who learned the hard way about density altitude – on approach one hot summer day his plane stalled on approach. Within two seconds it had impacted with no hope of survival, no time for a chute to work. One of our transient customers flew into a snowstorm over mountains and was not seen again. He probably never knew when he impacted… flying along and lights out.
Imagine repacking that thing every time you land 😭😂
They should make a plane inside of a plane. That way if you have problems with the regular outer plane, you can pull the lever and the smaller inner plane is deployed and you can keep on flying to your destination.
Hahahahaha
Ok Done. But what about the people living on the ground? I mean what if that emergency plane crash lands on a populated area? 🥲
That’s two in a month . Is the parachute a good idea on this plane , or is it just plain essential ?
Why do so many airplane engines quit is my question?
rookie pilots are the usual main cause in most NTSB reports.
A lot of planes have old engines with Ancient technology. It’s just difficult to manage for people used to modern technology.
Are there any planes in the US that stay in the air?
Guess that happened on March 5, 2024 at 5:04 PM local time by New Castle, Seattle.
I now identify as a plane parachute
That’s Allot of planes falling out the Sky…
This is so awesome it’s so good to hear a family survive. Thank God. I said it years ago they should’ve been made this type of technology
its been there for decades
Another crash. Why are there so many small aircraft crashes?
There aren’t. You just hear about them because people take plane crashes way more seriously than car crashes. There are plenty of deadly car accidents every day.
Now genuinely speaking, how many and what type of parachutes would it take to float a commercial airliner to the ground, if that’s even possible?
not practical. the weight of the system needed for a commercial airliner would make it impractical.
Its moving too fast, and too big, so not possible with out measures that make the space shuttle look easy.
Families. Keep children out if these planes.
Nope
Ive could of thought of that smh just wondering why it took so long for someone to come up with it
It’s been there for decades
Umm, why are there not more parachutes for planes.. helllo…. you telling me we can’t do this on bigger planes
No, the parachute required for commercial planes would simply weigh too much to be viable. This system only works for small light aircraft.
Yeah sure. But then you wouldn’t have any space for the passengers or cargo.
A parachute system on a commercial airliner would be silly. Not only are the planes already extremely safe, the parachute system would cost a ton of money and increase the price of tickets.
…so a protracted, uncontrolled descent to a crash site to be determined strictly by the vagaries of the wind is a good thing.
Rrrright…

Plane parachutes make terrible pilots even worse. Now as soon as anything happens they will just pull the parachute.
Not true. That was a fear that many in the industry initially had, however the data shows the parachute does indeed reduce loss of life.
AvWeb did a breakdown of the statistics.
Who takes there 2 year old on a plane?? They could’ve all died bro…
Shhh!! Don’t talk about airplanes. Boeing will take u out of the game.
special training 1. mayday mayday mayday 2.pull handle 3. tik tok video 4. crash
Was this a promo test?
Do they come in Boeing size?
you need to test parachute every now and then to make sure it is function in case of an emergency.
It’s surprising that one series of aircraft has so many incidents that warrant the parachutes use.
That’s why you fly a cirrus!!
They took their 2 year old child on that plane?? 🙁Wow! Only Caucasian people would do reckless stuff like that. 😡
Problem is that most fatal accidents occur during the takeoff or landing phase where the parachute is useless
I read that the minimum CAPS activation altitude is 600 feet AGL.
Daily carnage
As a Cirrus pilot, when he asked, “do the pilots need special training to deploy the chute?” The answer is, yes.
In order for anyone to fly any aircraft, they must first be checked out on it. In the case of the Cirrus, there is special training to be checked out on the operation of the aircraft and the parachute system, Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS), is built into the training and constantly drilled into each pilot. By the time you’ve completed your training, you’ve flown approximately 10 flight hours, and have demonstrated to the Instructor Pilot that you can competently operate the aircraft and CAPS.
So, the journalist is wrong when he answered no.
My sister is a Cirrus pilot as well!
Do Boeing planes have parachutes….‼️👀⁉️
I was wondering when this would become a thing.
Now they figure this out
I thought about this years ago. It’s cool to actually see it invented and used in action !!
First time I saw that’s brilliant ideas on the light airplane way back 80’s in the movie
God must be crazy! 😂
Loud noise somewhere.
World: What was that?
Americans: GUNSHOT!
This seems like something that should have been implemented years ago…
The parachute? It’s been certified on Cirrus planes in 1998. The first emergency deployment was in 2002 and there has been more than a hundred deployments since.
You’re telling me… There are so many small plane crashes, that one kind of plane with one kind of safety system has saved 300 people?!
Either that’s a terrible plane with a parachute on it, or you should never fly in a small plane, ever.
now do automobiles. 🙄 … never fly in a small plane, jeez.
News people are complete idiots nowadays…0.17…the landing gear is pointing up to the sky so i would say that its completely upside down instead of “partially”…1:24…so deploying a parachute will increase the survivability rate?…well duh!!!…2:15…do they need special training?…um no, you just pull a handle:)
At least you have a chance. Otherwise your done.
Planes are designed to keep gliding even if an engine failure occurs.
plane parachute saves lives
Another inexperienced “pilot” putting his families life in danger. Cirrus are complicated aircraft and the parachute is not a replacement for actually knowing how to operate an aircraft like that safely. And before someone says “well they survived”, think about the people on the ground that might not next time. If you can afford a cirrus you probably work too much to be able to fly it well.
0:48 lol bullet proof backpacks
The comments here are a real indication of the ignorance that surrounds general aviation probably because people get their information from a VERY unreliable source, television or the newspaper!
The engine on an airplane only propels it forward. It does not make it fly. The wings do that. So if the engine quits you land like you do any other time. You just do not always get a choice as to where.
I am very curious to hear what the statistics are on those Cirrus crashes/forced landings where the pilot could have just landed and not used the ballistic parachute, which totals the airplane as far as I know.
And lastly, 40,000 highways deaths every year and airplanes are dangerous?
When you drop a fireball from the 3 point line VFR. KOBEEEE
I knew it had to be either a Cirrus sr-22 or a Cirrus vision jet.
So… 128 Cirrus coming down under ‘chute and presumably a few that weren’t able to – how many have been built? Does this “feel”(no data) like a high percentage of unrecoverable inflight failures compared to other makes with or without a BRS?
that’s a great invention
When that girl said she heard a loud bang and thought it was gun shots.. That’s telling. When I was growing up in the 80s, I would never have thought that.
Well she had clearly never heard a gun shot, because a big tin can hitting the ground sounds nothing like a gun shot. We can thank the US media for convincing everyone that the world is far more dangerous than it is. You can look at the crime statistics, America’s far safer now than it was when you were a kid in the 80’s. What’s changed is the way the media likes to portray the country.
👍👍
😢🎉🎉
My sister flies and sometimes works for Cirrus. They are really great planes.
Instead of a round parachute, would a wing shape paraglide chute be better, IE: allow the pilot to glide to a safer landing area ? ☆

Piston engines are required to have full rebuilds of their powerplant at certain intervals of hourly service by FAA regulations; most people neglect it due to cost and id bet thats a factor here, because all have been piston driven aircraft.
No, this is not a requirement for Part 91 flights which includes EVERY flight by a Cirrus piston aircraft. You are totally incorrect.
Fantastic.!!!! Something I thought of years ago actually works.
What is the “solid rocket booster” boosting?
A parachute.
Amazing how the crashed plane changed color during story.
Cirrus aircraft are known for having failures,That’s why the company has parachutes on the aircraft they’re not very reliable.
Cirrus aircraft are ahead of their time. Read the story behind why the guy built this system
Washington State ? The Plane Must have been built by Boeing Employees ! 😅😅😅😅😅.
I bet they’re rally glad they had a parachute. They do need to be above 500’ to be affective I believe.
It should be mandatory by law for all aircraft to be equipped with parachutes, instead congress spent time banning TikTok.
As a pilot, thats completely unrealistic
Thank God for miracles!
Just wondering why so many of these SR-22 planes are needing to deploy these parachute systems?
This quote from an aviation safety page comes the closest to summing it up: “The high percentage of Cirrus accidents that are fatal appears to reflect how the airplanes are used-as all-weather, cross-country machines-by pilots not necessarily trained or experienced enough for that kind of operation. All the safety gadgets Cirrus has added, including the parachute, haven’t proved capable of overcoming a lack of skill or basic errors in judgment by pilots, just as with all the airplanes flown before.” I’m a private pilot myself, with about 1000 hours, and that paragraph makes sense.
Can we get that on the Boeing max?
seems i read something about the Cirrus having some bad behavior and the safety chute was required for certification, then again i’m old and senile.
Small planes dangerous
I’ve always thought since seeing space capsules come back on a parachute, why can’t this be done for planes? Think of all of the lives that could have been saved.
