A heatwave is bringing scorching temperatures to many parts of Southeast Asia. The Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia are among countries baking in the month-long intense heat.
Al Jazeera’s Jessica Washington reports from the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

Correction – 2023 was end of El Nina, this is not the 2nd year of el Nino. El Nino cycle started around 7 months ago, September 2023 (CSIRO), Get it right, very important.
Correctin it’s La Nina actually.
El nina? 😂😂😂😢😢😢
It’s la niña

climate change being blamed when they burn ALL their rubbish!!!! there is still rain in Indonesia as of yesterday!

there is a reason why the afternoon siesta exists, after all
Actually experienced this same exact horror in Pattaya several years ago. The heat will just render anyone breathless and lethargic, unable to do anything except to lie down.
who cares about mongoloyyd face humans have to say
When I’m in Japan, I can walk 10+km a day, outdoor straight up under the sun, every day, out of the blue.
But coming back to Thailand. Most I can do is less than km a day. More than that I need to ride a bike or car.
I didn’t need 10c to sustain my live or anything. On AC just 29c with 40% humidity would be great enough.
April & May are actually the hottest months of the year in the Philippines! We’re in the middle of the dry season so it’s pretty normal and nothing extraordinary!
wake up! it will get worse so it won’t be normal 😂
@@migspedition Well, did I lie? I don’t think so! The dry season happens every year in the Philippines and there’s nothing extraordinary about it! I would be more surprised if the temperature gets colder or if it rains in the middle of April, lol! Having said all that, I do recognize global warming and I don’t deny its negative impact on our planet & the people’s lives. All I said was that April & May are the hottest months of the year in the Philippines and it’s the truth! I stand by my statement!
@@rm_alfaro Yes April and May are the hottest months, but April shouldn’t be as hot as it is right now. Heat indexes reaching 42C and above were normal for May, but now it’s happening in April which isn’t normal. This year’s april and may will be a different breed compared to previous years
@@Justin-eb4ri You should know that air temperature and heat index are two different sets of data and are not the same! Heat index is usually higher than air temperature because heat index takes into account not just the air temperature but also the relative humidity. There is direct relationship between the air temperature and relative humidity and the heat index, meaning as the air temperature and relative humidity increase (decrease), the heat index increases (decreases). The air temperature and the relative humidity in the Philippines during the summer months have not really changed much compared to previous years based on PAGASA records. What has actually changed is not the air temperature but the way the Philippine media have been doing & presenting their weather reports! In previous years, the local media is only reporting the air temperature and sometimes includes relative humidity but we don’t hear anything about heat index. Now, the local news are mostly reporting about heat index but they don’t mention anymore about air temperature because the numbers are only in the mid-30s and not that alarming. They only report about heat index now because the heat index is normally higher than the air temperature and the news networks want to sensationalize their reporting so that people would take more precautions. As a result, a lot of people who don’t know the difference between air temperature and heat index are being misled into thinking that temperatures this current year are higher than previous years when in fact, the average temperature during the summer months has not really changed much compared to previous years. The above 40s that you’ve been seeing & hearing from the local news reports in some parts of the Philippines was actually heat index and not air temperature. For the month of April 2024, the maximum daytime temperature in Manila usually reach 34°C, falling to 23°C at night. These air temperatures are not really much different compared to previous years as opposed to what the media have been trying to imply but they wouldn’t say that but instead they would report about heat index, lol! To have a fair & credible comparison, then we should compare using the same unit of measurement. If you compare data using air temperature and heat index, then the results would be misleading and not comparable at all because these units of measurement are not the same!
Watching while sipping coffee not big deal
Thailand is so either morning and night 😢😢
Absolutely hot 🥵 like me😊
And they drink a cup of coffee first thing in the morning.
And they wear long sweaters so their skin doesn’t turn dark.
@@kc_1018
Not everyone.
@@kc_1018its not just that… Some wore long sleeves and long pants to avoid skin damage like sunburn. Especially those who work under the sun like The farmers or the Tricycle drivers. These people dont care about making their skin lighter… But they certainly want to avoid sunburn.
I am Filipino I understand this far greater than you who don’t see in our perspective
@@kc_1018u dont know what u talking about stupid!

Very hot in Southeast Asia
CLIMATE CHANGE 🥵
Jakarta usually 25 – 27′ celcius, Today 34-37′ celcius, feels like a middle east 🥵
No way jakarta temperature is 25-27°, for a big city its likely 32°+
Here in India it’s 38′ feels like 45′ celcius
Philippines ranging 39 to 41
Cibubur ujan gede terus tiap hari. Adem aja
@@markerildimla2506 Manila reaches 50-52 especially in cities
Wah sepanas itu ><
It feels like we are in hell’s trial 🥵🥵🥵🥵.
Yeah, it’s supposed to be rainy season in indonesia but there’s so little rain since the start of april. The scorching heat is getting unbearable
Jakarta ujan gede terus tiap hari
Hampir tiap hri smnggu ttakhir hujan trus ditmpat w

Pertengahan tahun nanti agak dingin
Indonesia bagian mana anda?
Same here in Sri Lanka. Never in my life have I experienced a heatwave as intense as this one.
Yeah, but your not 150 years old now are you? Perhaps look as some temps, last century, it HAPPENED then too!!!
Lol. Check the temp and you’ll be proved wrong
The scorching sun is giving so much heat that burns all🥵
You dont need more infrastructured, we need more trees
It’s really hot……
Vietnamese government has cut down a lot of trees in the past 5 years. The whole country now pays the price for such stupid act. Meanwhile, Singapore treasures trees and it suffers less from both climate change and El Nino. Singapore is always the best Southeast Asian country.
same here in the Philippines. lots of trees cut down for road widening projects
It’s 33 degrees here in Singapore. Yes our officials treasure trees a lot. However it’s more of the humidity rather than the heat that is unbearable even in the night.
What heat wave it always hot in SEA whats the different?
Well if you surpass a degree of normal hot then Yes Its a Problem! Your Logic is like sayings what’s the difference between 30, 50, 100 Celsius since its all Hot LOL
🥵This is sending me lmaooo🥵🥵🥵 “🥵”
Philippines Heat Index is unbearable

END THE USE OF FOSSIL FUEL!
EVs, SolarCars and HydroCars should be used instead!!! Down with the oil companies!!!
Is it because of production of batteries?
Too many humans, using too many natural resources, and producing too much pollution, including heat, the heat equivalent of 12 Hiroshima yield nuclear bomb blasts (63 trillion BTUs per blast) PER SECOND, or 1,036,800 PER DAY. Hot enough for ya?
Meanwhile millennials are flexing that they can endure the heatwave
It is pretty normal for us Southeast Asian if it is hot in the late morning, noon, and afternoon, but the heat in the evening and night recently becomes quite unbearable, like 30 Celsius with 70% humidity in the evening is just melting us🫠🫠
go and check news for last year it was record breaking. But this year it is even *HOTTER* !! Malaysia temp is at 36-38°C but with humidity, real feel temperature is 41-43°C !!!
El Niño does the opposite here in the US west coast specially in California. It brings a lot more rain which we badly need.
Same in Western part of Europe
Same in western Australia
Philippines now reaches 50-52 degree celsius, it is very unbearable.
That, that i rather die. 50-52?? Seriously? How can you still alive? How? That’s half way to be boiled alive. Man, rn here in Jakarta it’s 37° feels 40° and even in this heat i really just want to bury myself on ice.
38 here in Bangkok, man the rainy season sure is taking its time
My app says “feels like” temperature is 47° in Cambodia. Please remember our beautiful planet is a living organism and treat her with compassion ❤ it’s the only way to turn this trajectory around 🌴♻️🌏
Yet so many still wear face masks – idiots
masks can protect your ugly face from the heatwave as well as it blocks harmful uva and uvb rays from the sun

Yeah. Its definitely not all Asian nations not polluting the planet. Or Russia doing the same with fossil fuels. Um yeah no no
It is so hot to the point where when i walk my usual daily commute from the metro to my office i will drenched in sweat like i was in a gym for an hour. It’s a very near walk, just about 500m but it seems like i was walking for days in the desert.
Fyi, i live in Jakarta. So using a private vehicle isn’t particularly the best option if you wanna get to your office on time.
Haha… a desert haha… bit dramatic.
if at least our country had gas and oil like rich ME countries we could do the same like them 45 degrees so what? turn on the ac 24/7, fly to europe as often, hire workers from outside to work in the heat lol here? hot, poor and polluted air still have to work and hardly pay bills. everyday suffering😅
1:42 Discussing the harm extreme weather can cause to children while they are visibly enjoying themselves in the background. 😭
yeah, coz it’s hot 24 hours a day…what a genius
Exactly, it’s too hot in Southeast Asia, that’s why I’ve moved to the Middle East.

It’s no joke in Singapore these past few days and worsening since the heatwave hit after TS concerts despite occasional heavy downpour – the air remains hot and itchy. Totally soaked at home just sitting without aircon only the fan on this very morning lije most days in past few weeks. Sweaty, sticky, itchy, smelly is what living in Singapore is right now. The heat simply destroys the appetite, mental agility and physical activity. After a short walk , one is left panting for more oxygen in the already very oxygen thin high pressure air.
In Pakistan rains have caused decrease of temperature and we are still using blankets, which is unusual. Meanwhile in 2022 during march april heatwave killed over 100 people. 🤡
It’s so hot. I’m sweating like crazy, even at night. And no rain for months. And water supply and river dry up
Not only in the city. Even in a rural area, the heat is still crazy. Even in a high elevation location, it’s still hot.
China is to blame. They have lots of factories contributing to greenhouse gases. They need to be dealt with
Being outside for a moment in the middle of the day makes me feeling sick. The heat is becoming even more unbearable, living in Jakarta making it worse for me.
Well we chose economy instead of the environment so what are we complaining for?
We hardly deal our own carbon print and from El-Nino wind route, all those emission from Brazil, India, and US came straight into South-East Asia for whole year
no wonder no fat people in vietnam….they are hardworking people.fat is sick!
We need to restore forest now
Everything now caused by climate change! Perhaps not male baldness.
More trees less concrete
Currently in Ho Chi Minh right now visiting from the USA, this heat is no joke. 😮💨🥵
PLANT TREES PLEASE
Yet it’s estimated to get even hotter here in the Philippines in May. 😫
Time to put up solar panels over city walkways. The shade will keep people cooler underneath them, and the power can be used where it is produced – to cool buildings and more.
The weather reports don’t look like anything out of the norm but the heat definitely feels different this year. It feels like my skin is sizzling in direct sunlight, we’re literally baking under the heat.
Eehh gue pulang kerja banget nih.
Cuma pake cardi aja keringet netes dari rambutt sumpah asli
Greenhouse gas producing countries should compensate the nations affected by these climate change. Poor countries are not that industrialized to produce high levels of greenhouse gases.
It’s 33 degrees here in Singapore just a 5 minute walk feels like a 20 minute walk under the scorching sun. The worse is humidity and less about heat even in the night.
Can borrow some of those sunshine ? Been raining almost everyday in singapore, laundry cant be dried naturally
Heat wave Also in srilanka’ s coolest region
In Thailand in the afternoon it is usuall7 35c or more
