Officials said one plane was about to take off and one had been cleared to taxi across the same runway when air traffic controllers ordered both planes to stop abruptly. NBC News’ Emilie Ikeda reports.

EXTREMELY Good Point !!!
You try to blame this non-emergency on a political party, but do you know what we can blame on a political party? Our generation of republicans attacked the Capitol in an attempt to overthrow the government. They’re literal traitors.
It’s been messy since he took over. You don’t even see or hear from him.
Either you are a bot or just extremely stupid.
didn’t southwest just have a plane narrowly avoid hitting an atc tower in ny lol
yepper.
This was an ATC issue. Thankfully not pilot in this case.
@@deebee3174 Yep Southwest was already stopping as they saw the Jetblue coming down the runway. Lots of layers of safety, but the swiss cheese holes will align eventually.
Actually, no although it was reported as such. It was another panicked, inexperienced controller acting irrationally. The Southwest aircraft didn’t even receive an “obstacle” warning in their cockpit. CNN reported falsely how close their proximity was to the the tower enhancing the bravado.
LOL?! And this is funny how, exactly?
So, ATC messed up?
yes

1000 foot. Holy cow. Staffing shortages?? Just let the pilots figure it out.
This was an ATC issue. News sites often mislead and scare. Ground controller (in control of directions on the ground) cleared Southwest to cross the active runway. Tower (in control of runways) cleared another plane for takeoff. In some small airports this could be the same person but isn’t still since it’s a lot of work. Even when cleared, best practice is to check the runway before crossing. Luckily Southwest was paying attention.
If you have no clue how this works, don’t even bother commenting
That’s a baaaaaad idea lol
The American Tenerife is coming.
Do you know anything about the Tenerife disaster? It helps to read…….I watch all the disaster shows……Pilot error because he took off without a yes from the tower. It was also a European airline who started telling pilots they would get in a lot of trouble if they didn’t get back to their home port by a certain time…..The pilot who killed everyone was in the advertisements for his airline because he has such a good record……..It was a whole lot of unusual events and it all could have been avoided if this airline didn’t make a policy at the time which said something like pilots pay would be docked if they don’t make it to their destination on time. That was the straw that broke the camels back…….I feel sorry for the poor air traffic controller there who normally gets few flights but all these jumbos were landing there because their was a bomb threat at another nearby popular tourist island.

Can they make a configuration that does not require a plane to cross a runway? That’s what I would do. Too dangerous.
As only exit and only entry is not bad ideas, just it will take lots of space. Not work on islands or mountains. And that exit may use as entry for emergency.
Not possible for most places. Runways are configured for wind and available space. This was an ATC issue. Thankfully Southwest was paying attention.
No or it would not be reasonable(add big taxing delays and additional costs to everybody).

It’s one of the most stressful jobs.
They are the one’s that almost caused a crash
@@Christian-vq8rd It’s why the aviation safety system is more of people watching their butt for their sake with safe guards in place. ATC is a job that has long hours and stress, while communicating with multiple people. You have to manage multiple planes and talk to the people managing multiple areas on radio. Where again 1 mistake can be tragic. Not a job many can and would apply for.
@trilight3597 I pray it doesn’t take a tragedy for that to be fixed, but I’m sure it will.
Not only do we have to watch out for improperly built Boeing planes, but now we also have to be on the lookout for clueless ATC controllers… It’s only a matter of time for things to really get out of control.
No air traffic controllers are not clueless, the job responsibilities they have are greatly appreciated by the majority of the traveling public! Don’t know how they do it with the airspace as crowded as it is. Lot of respect for the job the do everyday!
@@jeroengo1896 Nobody is discrediting the job and I never generalized. I think most people are aware that it is a very difficult job where a simple error can lead to many lives lost. The reality is that this shouldn’t have happened, no excuses, and the bells sounded years ago on what understaffing could lead to and the urgency to look after the health and well being of ATCs. It doesn’t seem like the FAA or the government cares at all. They’re just waiting for disaster to happen.
@@jeroengo1896 not clueless just over worked and tired.
There’s a channel called VAS Aviation on YouTube that regularly features ATC and pilot communications with graphics detailing the location and travel of the aircraft involved. I highly recommend it as the channel is often ahead of the game when it comes to these types of stories.
Thank you!
Everyone has been saying… over worked controllers are going to cause an accident…
Many ATC retired during the pandemic and they have a huge shortage. Need senior ones but it’s not easy to be an ATC.
Or hiring people based off of color and gender instead of hiring people who are actually best for the job.
Statistically, these incidents or would’ve been incidents won’t translate into any significant changes. There are so many flights in a day nationally nevermind globally, that a minor event like this is so statistically insignificant that it feels as casual as an incident with your local city bus. Social media highlights the recent major incidents with planes but I wager if you analyzed the “big data” coming out of the airline industry lately, you’ll see nothing has changed. And if you need some anecdotal evidence that nothing will/has changed after these events, I just bought plane tickets earlier this week even after having seen these airline/plane incidents in recent news/social media lol.
Lol and I did also see videos of recent Boeing whistle blower before buying my tickets. So to the wall street investors, if you’re looking for a solid bet, don’t short the airline industry.
That one controller that gave clearance… didn’t sound sure of his command.
That’s what I thought too……..Big night out on the town the night before.

so how can you have the clearance to take off from air traffic controller, and yet permission to cross active runway from ground controller…
You can’t. It sounds like this was a trainee and he just messed up
Maybe less air traffic on small/short routes that require regional jets and instead improve the rail system. That might free up air space and congestion as well as ease up on air traffic controllers having to do overtime and close the gap on shortages. Would also be environmentally conscious as airlines are major contributors to environmental polution and global warming.
Many issues with that. Too much for a comment. But we can still discuss it. I agree to an extent but that wouldn’t work like other countries. Cars and trucks are worse for the environment and airlines are the most environmentally aware since that is tied to their finances (aka fuel burn).
@@trilight3597wrong airplanes burn multiple times more fuel than going by car, bus, or train.

Would be hard for the Jetblue to know the Southwest was going to cross as they were cleared for takeoff, Southwest was not yet on the runway and they were cleared to cross on a different frequency than Jetblue was on. Although this is ATCs fault..Southwest should have cleared left and right before crossing. This was not actually as close as the media portrays, I think Southwest was already stopping.
And just remember that pete butigieg wanted to be president…of course, the one we have now is as bad as it can get.
These controllers sound incompetent
They certainly lack all ICAO standards and terminology. The ground controller sounded like she barely knew the phonetic alphabet???
This will become more frequent thanks to the DEI hiring efforts within the federal government. The FAA is an agency struggling desperately for qualified applicants but they are gonna go the other way on that one to fill the void.
SC just ruled against DEI. Public safety demands merit is critical positions.

ATC jobs are one of the most stressful in the world. You literally constantly have peoples lives in your hands. It often gets hectic, and I can’t even begin to imagine what that must feel like.
Don’t worry folks – that’s why they put brakes on aircraft. Good thing that they don’t hire pilots based on characteristics other than ability like they do ATC personnel, right?
Uhhhh 😅
“What went wrong”. Somebody fked up.
I remember when I was flying out of DCA, they had cleared us for take off on a runway that intersected another…just as a plane was landing on that runway. Fortunately, I saw the plane and cut power before we got to far. DCA especially is a hyper congested airport that is seeing far too much traffic. They should have never opened up runway 4, and in my opinion, they should ether slash traffic and send it to BWI or IAD, or close the airport in its entirety. I loved flying in and out of it, but most pilots would agree its not really that safe of an airfield. As for staffing issues at ATC, that’s the FAA’s fault.
I am surprised they didn’t say 2 Boeing planes had a close call.
Only one was Boeing

I’m still amazed by how all this is still handled through voice commands. You’d think computerized messages on a display with verbals as a backup would be far safer. Computers are simply way better at processing these types of logistics.

Well, according to VASAviation, it was about 300 ft, which indeed is closer than 1000 ft.
If you listen to the ATC’s voice, it will all make sense
As a 30 year FAA controller, level 10-12, I can tell you that standards were absolutely lowered to improve diversity. They created a new base level for incompetence. In other words, “once lowered to improve diversity numbers, they stayed low for everyone.” I’m embarrassed by what has happened to my profession. I can also tell you there will be absolutely no consequences or retraining or addressing of the individual(s) at fault. The union, NATCA protects the weak, and the agency protects diversity.
The FAA in 2012 went to using biographical information to hire candidates rather than training and talent assessment testing (the test that was released in court documents showed things like: You would get 1 point on your score for every high school sport you played, several points if you were unemployed, and surprisingly if you have a pilot’s license or previous experience you get 0 points) The FAA is still paying for this blunder and during this time thousands of students paying for their own training gave up trying to get in and moved on with their lives. They probably are not “understaffed”, they just don’t have enough qualified controllers.
