Taiwan’s new president, Lai Ching-te, was sworn into office Monday amid rising tensions with China, which has previously referred to Lai as a “stubborn worker” for Taiwan’s independence.
Lai had been vice president during his predecessor Tsai Ing-Wen’s term as president, and is expected to continue Tsai’s policies.
In the weeks before Lai’s inauguration, Beijing increased military incursions around the island. Just today, Taiwan’s defense ministry said that six Chinese planes had flown over the Taiwan Strait’s median line, an unofficial boundary that China does not recognize.
