Anyone married to, or the child of a US citizen, getting them a social security number and green card should simply be a formality.
My wife is from Japan. It was a nightmare getting her resident status. And it made absolutely zero sense because I, her husband, am a natural born US citizen. I got angry in the interview; I said in part, “If you deport her, you’re deporting me too, a US citizen. This process is ridiculous.” Immediately approved.
We couldn’t get her green card extended or renewed while in Japan because they don’t have the biometrics facility here, even at the US Embassy in Tokyo. Japan, you don’t even need that. We would have to fly to the United States just to do something we should be able to do online–as is the case in Japan.
In Japan, this process takes a month and $40. It’s a formality, because we’re married. We could have met and married yesterday, no difference. It’s just paperwork, taxes and such. It’s not even twenty pages of documents in total.
That’s your big backlog, putting people through the ringer who should have zero trouble getting their status current.
