Cyclist Kristen Faulkner is set to compete in Paris, but her journey to the Olympics is surprising. She didn’t even start cycling until after college. But her hobby of taking rides in New York City’s Central Park quickly turned into a competitive passion that landed her on Team USA. NBC News’ Stephanie Gosk reports.

Won the gold medal for UNITED STATES
Congratulations Faulkner with your gold Olympic medal!
Fantastic race, full of drama!
You have to rename the video to “…unusual path to the Olympic Gold”. Congrats to Kristen!
YES.
what an exciting and inspired victory!
Faulkner started racing for CRCA/Dave Jordan in NYC. Jordan was a local cycling legend who left us far too early and as among those who knew him, hopefully he’s looking down and smiling.
Congrats, Kristen!
Awesome story, Gold Medal happy ending!
So proud of her. Was not expecting that result from her. You go girl 👍😊
And now the Olympic champion!
Congratulations Kristen!
👍Great ride👍
What a move she made to win the gold!!
Having dragged Kopecki back into contention!
@@rupertmartin3784 Not the other way around?
@@FreedomOfSport Kopecki was doing less work. I’m not denigrating Kopecki, that was a smart move, and that’s racing! Faulkners move was a go-for-broke move, that would have been difficult to recover from, because she wasn’t just burning a match, she was lighting the whole book of matches!
Gets the gold for the Olympics in cycling…. has in her history getting hit by car.. you really can’t make this up
Greetings from Germany. Congratulations Kristen on your gold medal. I grew up in Colorado Springs, cycling and climbing around the Garden of the Gods and North Cheyenne Canyon.
Homer is so proud of this girl!
wheres the drums….. tap tap tap… dude looks like a lady… tap tap tap…. dude looks like a lady.
Thank you, Kristen. Just watched you gold dust the competition. We’re proud of you 🫶
You go girl 👍 AWESOME ….great move in Paris ..OLYMPIC GOLD 👏👏👏
A GOLD medalist! This is one of the best olympic stories to come out of these Paris games.
Nice to see an athlete from the amateur NYC cycling scene make it to the TOP. Chapeau, Kristen!!
She is Alaskan raised! Just saying!👍😉
I picked this up last year as a way to lose weight. I competed in a triathlon and with only 1 year of practice, i was fastest on the bike in the mixed teams and out of the solos, i would be right in the average.
And thats with no training. 3 weeks notice. And inferior equipment.
Cycling rules, GO GET ANOTHER GOLD IN THE VELODROME!
Sweet, tasty GOLD!
Second year in a row the women’s road race is won by an outsider. Gotta love seeing this!
Something to do with not being helped by teammates like in most road cycling races, maybe?
I wouldn’t say she’s an outsider. She’s been putting in good results all year even winning a stage and to Giro this year.
I’m watching and being totally schocked!!!! Olympic champion and in last kms totally destroyed all opponents!!!
Hard believe this is a real story!!!
She sure is!! She won!! Fabulous story. 😂
Timing of this interview published is just so awesome! Kristen Faulkner that last kilometers you were just simply amazing, just flying and everyone else had 0 chance.
Amazing story for a gold medalist.
Serious engine on this one.
Now she is an Olympic Champion. Kristen would be a perfect candidate for a second edition of “Range: How Generalists triumph in a Specialists’ World” by David Epstein.
She has always been naturally athletic. She has made all Homerites proud!
Wow, I seem to remember her from an article a few years ago. One gifted, really cool American woman!
Anything possible with epo.
👍👍👍👍👍
Next the World’s.
The commentators during the race today kept saying “she picked up cycling less than a decade ago..”. I was curious about her at that time and here she is. What a dynamic career she has! What an awesome women who is resilient enough to change the trajectory of her life, and achieves nobody can dare to.
Absolutely no doubt!!!! GOLD!
Great
Just another Alaska-born elite athlete Harvard CS major venture capitalist.
Us Alaskans are so proud of you!👍😉
She fell and still won Gold 🥇
The announcer was mistaken. They later realized that that was the other American kn the race, Chloe Dygert, who crashed.
Congratulations Kristen! Is next on the agenda the Tour De France de Femmes 8/12? I saw EF Education team kit there.
This was such an interested turn of events… she was been dragging along this far-more renown cyclist (Kopecky) to join two more renowned pro’s. Now it’s Her David vs. those three Goliaths. And by taking off immediately, those leading 2 hadn’t studied her – probably hadn’t heard of her. And Kopecky couldn’t/wouldn’t/DIDN’T educate them – “Hey – she lead me up to you – she gained at least 60 seconds on you two and I was doing minimal help! We gotta CHASE her!!” Of course, Kopecky was probably thinking, “These two will chase her down – I don’t have to say a thing.” Then it was too late. This situation could have only happened from 3 Euro cyclists with some knowledge of each other, and almost zero of Faulkner. “We know each other and how dangerous we are… we’ll chase her in a few seconds…” Then a few more and a few more. And kablooey – there went their chance for gold. That scene of Faulkner, head down with a 30m gap, and the camera looks back and we see those three sit up and look at each other… ha ha.
Vos is the most successful female cyclist of all time although she’s close to the end of her career. Kopecky is currently the best one day racer in the world. They were watching each other without realizing how strong Faulkner was/is. They’re very closely matched in the sprint and it showed at the end. Faulkner’s ride was brilliant. She took advantage of the other two favorites’ familiarity with one another. That’s the beauty of cycling – it’s not just about physical capability.
Best adjective is GOLDEN!
wow, couldn’t believe she rode M. Vos and L. Kopecky off in the last 3km just like that! Superb!
Very pleased to see that this gifted athlete managed to pull away from the evil life she would have led with the gangsters on Wall Street.
Not the first Alaskan to win a gold but she’s got to be the first from Homer!
To win with that gap to those riders 🤯
She just won Gold!!! 🥇
CRCA represent!
Yooo if you are on the Harvard crew team you are already an elite level endurance athlete. She rocks 💯 but it’s not as unlikely as our press makes it.
It’s unlikely because Kopecky is the best current one day racer in the world while Vos is the greatest female cyclist of all time. Faulkner is very intelligent and played them like a piano. They were looking at each other, literally.
They need to make her a star! Let’s get more American Women on bikes!
Went and won gold!! In an event she wasn’t even slated for. She’s a star!
@@jaytsuu2272 And raised in small town Alaska!😉👍
@@TroyOttosen-jg7tt 907 stand up!!!
@@jaytsuu2272 Huh???
Beautiful track jersey
She won road gold
Wow
Now does she go on track at oly Paris?
Congratulations Faulkner with your gold Olympic medal!
Big props to the Rider who qualified for this race but gave up her spot to Faulkner to focus on another event.
What an inspiration. Congratulations gold medal Olympic champion.👏👏👏👏👏
Strength, passion and smarts=gold;chapeau!
Couldn’t clip in, to standing on top of the podium for gold in 10 yrs time, WOW!
Great, wonderful story.
Congratulation 🎉..cheeerrs..from Indonesia
I wonder what the Bike Snob of NYC might have to say about her. Be nice, Snob.
This is nuts. I am from Homer, went into finance in NYC and ride the same laps in Central Park! Clearly not as fast…
Congratulations Kristen!!!
CRCA represent!
Fabulous! 🚴🏻♂️
Arguably the most interesting story to come out of the Olympics.
It’ll be great if she medals in the event she came for, but at this point who cares? She’s already made history. Time to focus more on the road Kristen!
Best road race ever 🚴
Amazing story ❤❤❤
there’s gonna be a new sign in Homer, AK with this girl’s name on it.
Watching the event, I was expecting there to be a big sprint to the finish line with 4-5 cyclists having a chance to win it but she took off and won it easily, making 3 trailing athletes sprint for 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Congrats to Kristen and to the coaches and supporters!
Tactical brilliance, the best cycle race this year. Of any gender. 🎉
This is a real advertisement for not pushing your kid on a single sport. She seems like a super driven person.
Wish I could talk to her, I have same degrees and background and worked in NYC, HATING what I did, dreaming of cycling and swimming every day, but I never joined the club in NYC, that was her start, its very competitive, I dropped my work as well, but she somehow got noticed and went west, good for her. wow, what a story. For cyclists this is bigger than Lance Armstrong.
Good luck on the track!
Congratulations 🇺🇸🥇
Awesome story! 🥇
This has to be a movie
Kristen is the poster child of these Olympics – which is funny of course, she’s not a child…,but she is the newcomer..,the unknown talent..,and her finish in the Gold medal performance in the Women’s road race event, when compared to Remco’s histrionic posing, was positively refreshing – Yes, I had a job to do and I did it….,so refreshing
Nice! I wonder if we’re related. I hope not because I’m quite attracted to her 🤔
1:48 She has more to offer than just resilience. In Paris, she showed the same intelligence as a racer as Anna Kiesenhofer three years ago, another surprising Olympic champion who won gold through resilience AND intelligence. They have a lot in common. These are great Olympic stories, worth to be told.
I used to like Lotte Kopecky. I didn’t appreciate her not taking the lead. After Kristen did the job to join Vos, she was very clever and strong being able to attack again. La tête et les jambes.👏
Amazing finish, amazing story…best story so far at the Olympics for me, Stephen Norodoski? Clark Kent would be second best for me.
A strong engine from rowing.😊
She’s that chick!
Something like this is simply not possible in men’s cycling.
Congrats
Congratulations.
Amazing story! First it was Anna Kiesenhofer in Tokyo and now Kristen Faulkner: unlikely heroes delivering incredible results.
Women’s Olympic Road race is the most entertaining race in all of cycling.
She’s awesome!
@1:11 Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Makes sense since the Olympic Training Center is what used to be Ent AFB.
Respect and big congratulations from Tasmania..👍
She’s a legend. Worth a documentary. Absolutely a legend. LEGENDARY.
2 Golds now 🥇🥇
Gold on track and on road. She is absolutely awesome!
Well done, but this just shows the utter lack of depth in women sport.
What a race 👏
rowing ftw
Very proud of you ! Young lady
