Teams in Oxford, U.K., and Boston, U.S., are working on new designs for plane engines, with the potential to create a “very high-speed aircraft” and take fuel out of the equation altogether. CNBC takes a look at both options.
Scimitar is a prototype jet engine from UK-based Reaction Engines. Developers tell CNBC that the experimental apparatus can extend the speed, the power, and the range of existing systems by up to 5 times the speed of sound.
Researchers from MIT are working on developing technology they hope will completely rethink aviation propulsion altogether, using an ion thruster. CNBC takes a closer look.

The heat increases expotentially, as does the drag when speed is increased.
Turbo jet engine components get in the way at higher Mach speeds so the ram jet was devised long ago.
Ram jets don’t work at lower speeds so a compound engine, of turbo & ram were devised buy ducting around the turbo when higher speeds are needed.
The added weight, higher fuel consumption, greater drag, & extreme temperatures are a challenge!
Like the Concord, all this speed comes at a high price & that is reflected of the price of the plane ticket & price drives sales & profits. Higher prices equals less profit!

We’re probably already into it for 10, or more years. The “Blackbird ” flew at MACH 3+, and was designed nearly 50 years ago.

What kind of air frame do you need to hold up to frictional heat build up on the aircraft,, Heavy metals I’m thinking,, will not be aluminum , carbon fibers? Also does the aircraft have to fly so fast or is fast needed as part of the cooling properties ? It’s not part ramjet is it?
Most of the time when they find a break thru it sounds great under our current way of thinking ,, then say you find an engine that can do what today’s engines can do but at a 25 % better fuel consumption, Instead of bolting it up and living with parameters we know now and bank the 25 % savings they will want to push everything until the fuel consumption is back down to today’s standards,, but look we can get you there with less time in the air.
Does not help the consumer with ticket cost, does not help the planet because your still burning that fuel when flying faster, only helps with time spent in the air,,
If the aircraft can get on the ground faster, it can recycle the trip with new passengers faster,,,, more trips per week/month/year = more tickets sold , and airlines are getting happy. I myself would like to see the save fuel not used (at that point),, save money for the people that fly, less CO2 for the planet. I maybe wrong, I haven’t done the math ,, no numbers to crunch yet really.

The designers of Concord succeeded because they based their design around how fast they could get a structure to go with the technology they had… others failed because they plucked a speed out of the air (pun intended) and then had to try and design something that could withstand that speed.
The thing is you can always go faster but if you can’t get paying public at those speed within acceptable risks then you just have an expensive paper exercise. How fast you can get a flying body to go has to be the core of any future design or you will fail to learn from the past.

Ion engines aren’t science fiction, but are already in use as a science fact in satellites as thrusters. One question about the space shuttle comes to mind, why put such large engines on a spacecraft if they can’t be used in space and cannot carry sufficient fuel? Or, engines that are only fed by the booster rockets during launch. They must have and could be dual purpose engines, that the space shuttle engines were also ion engines, and during their classified missions the shuttles have been to the moon and back. How do you launch it back from the moon? A rail launcher.
the noise from engines like these would shatter all glass, even reinforced. There has been no noticeable sculpting of earth around airports to reduce noise levels, and some airports have no room to build earth sculpting noise reducers

I’m thinking a mach 5 aircraft barley needs wings…just enough for control and take off..they could almost be designed like a lifting body but much sleeker.
