I bet their UAT in staging is fully automated and poorly maintained. Seems to be the trend, automate everything, lay off QA/ automation engineers, and DevOps and forget about contingencies. Then you can’t roll back cos you’ve laid off everyone who’s built and maintained the repos.

How easy the press and other fall for a line – it is an update failure, yeh right! I doubt it already. CrowdStrike would never admit to being hacked or a cybersecurity incident, given they are a prominent zero-trust authentication provider (Cloud Access Security Broker, CASB) to MS cloud services and the consumers of it! Customers reliant will be enacting a rethink now or shouldn’t have had all their eggs in one basket in a resilient cloud security architecture in the first place anyway but were forced to an extent by MS having the dependency but hence why a multi cloud and off-web DR capability is also critical for key business systems. Be clear about one thing if as I suspect it is a cyber-attack, this is just the start, as nation adversary cyber groups are finding and likely already have wormed their way into various systems. Unlike criminals looking for a fast buck and money from individuals and companies, they are more intent on countrywide or global impacts, especially to western nations. So, they get into central control and gateway systems like this that national services and utilities etc might rely on via their internet facing apps first. Then using a vulnerability or exploits such as an escalation of privilege attack to a weak exposed system and then try do what’s termed lateral movement, setting themselves up with access across multiple more critical systems and servers, building up a list of them and keeping what’s called persistency of that elevated privileged access, whilst building an attack strategy for maximum impact when they decide to pull the trigger so to speak. Not your typical go in and delete server files etc that systems are protected against, much more complicated and planted in a way to not only disrupt and destroy but to make recovery difficult or take a long time thus maximising the impact.
Most systems nowadays, especially I know from putting them in banks and many organisations over the years, as security of the systems has evolved, are heavily secured and locked down but it does not account for vulnerabilities in the Operating Systems or via the server applications that allow these security measures to sometimes be bypassed. Usually the objective of any hackers is to gain root access via compromised credentials whose privileges can be escalated to root level or ultimately Domain administrator level (if this is gained an entire organisation is in deep 💩). Why this update going wrong narrative doesn’t add up either to me, especially putting out that a patch has to be written to Falcon. If you are rolling back you don’t need the patch, that comes later unless they are doing what’s termed fix forward, which seems very foolish and could cause further exposure and impact when the obvious answer is to roll back to a known working state for everyone. Even if it was an update, to review what went wrong and why etc before attempting any further updates, that’s normal IT practice in a DR (Disaster Recovery) scenario, which this definitely seems to qualify as 😲
