Millions of Americans have already voted or will cast their ballots on Election Day on November 5th.
But their vote doesn’t really decide who will become President.
Al Jazeera’s Cyril Vanier explains.

How can Al Jazeera be credible in discussing democracy and elections when its own country doesn’t hold elections?😮💨
Yup usa is evil and its people blind
Formative
I don’t get it how can candidate having fewer vote can be president if all electoral college vote transferred to winner candidate means the maximum vote percent is going to winner candidate if anyone have idea plz explain
Popular vote across the country is different than popular vote within each state. In 2016, Hillary won popular vote across country but trump won election coz he won popular votes in the states required to make 270 electoral candidates.
Basically it’s all dependent on swing states
An archaic system that does not equally distribute the value of a vote throughtout the participants (voters).
American election is always intense such rules is necessary to avoid open rigging
I wouldnt call it archaic. It’s designed to stop larger states from dominating elections.
Actually, it does.
@@cliffkemp ratios, Cliff. Super easy arithmetic: divide the states electoral points by the population. Ratios
Not how it works. That’s why we are a republic. Each state is its own country like the EU. The difference is, we are not independent countries, but are governed as such. By population, you have representatives in the house. By state, you have senators. The people within the states are represented in the house by population. The more populous the state, the more representation. The senate isn’t and has different responsibilities. As the 10th amendment states, clearly, the states have the power to decide their issues within their boundaries provided no law conflicts with the constitution and the federal mandates it specifically spells out. Simply put, the fed is supposed to protect the country, regulate commerce between states, and settle conflicts among states… nothing more. Even the voting process is delegated to the states. You original comment and comment directed at me are constitutionally incorrect. The math was decided in the 18th century. It was correct then and now.
Being a superpower and self-proclaimed champion of democracy, its system needs to be free from such loopholes. However, it isn’t the case in the USA. Here it clearly shows that the system has been designed which is undermining people’s choice
US is one of the most democratic country so even a minority can decide who represents them

Cyril Vanier did an EXCELLENT job explaining the ‘Electoral College’. THANK YOU.
Gotta luv American democracy…..such a sham 😂
I agree. Instead we should appoint a supreme leader, practice sharia law and turn the USA into a breeding ground for terrorists. I like that much better.
WTF!
Isn’t it time to abolish the electoral college once and for all?
A majority of americans do actually support it.
Ah the idiots aka Americans 😂😂
AJ teaching us about democratic elections. 🤣
Lol yeah
Comments being deleted so fast weeee
This video shows how the Electoral College DOESN’T WORK.
Democracy ❌ Idiocracry ✅
The story of America
That would be the popular vote system bro
Jazeer lies
American elections are anything but democratic. Wealthy oligarchs control everything
It’s complicated two elections in one
Popular vote doesn’t count if one is leading by a margin
And what about those unelected officials controlling the elected officials And bodies like federal reserves, who are they anyone knows?
Trump is coming pal.
Puppet democracy
Who win i don’t care about us election this two president same policy killing inocent palastine people
America: the home of the loopholes.
Democracy is just an illusion
2:07 – To the untrained eye, you’d think the game is rigged.
Is 46.4 greater than 48.5?
In the American Democracy Math, you betcha!
I think that people are missing the wisdom behind the electoral college. It gives power to small states to ensure that their needs are not ignored by politicians in the build up to an election.
Without that a politician would just need to focus on winning in the big states.
Not saying its perfect but there’s some wisdom behind it
🤔🤔🤔So what is the point of voting?
To sway the electoral college.

Who cares? America is built on stolen land and the bodies of Natives. The entire population “benefits” from this colonialist crime. Y’all partners in crime. 😡
Bullchit!!! He partially said it.
Not all states are like Texas but only 17 states have winner take all is 7 more states amendment they’re constitution especially the swing states then the electoral college wouldn’t matter n it would be given been to the ppl. They don’t want you to know that they’ve been trying for 30 years to do this.
Don’t believe me Google it!!!
Electoral college is a total scam, get real.
US needs a whole new construction but that’s just another can to kick ….
I went to Electoral College for 3 years and actually passed Geology.

The quickest rundown of the U.S electoral system I ever seen.
superb
the US isnt just a democracy. its a constitutional federal republic and liberal democracy
This.
But remember Qatar has never been democratic, so these commentators probably have very little understanding of democracy
Why is this fcountry worried about our election
Arabs telling the west how democracy works is the epitome of irony
The EC is pretty simple. The states run presidential races separately so a “popular vote” would not only be worse, it doesnt make any sense.
It is a stupid and unnecessary complicated system. It can be changed but the voters of America are not continuous fighters and goal oriented. Remember they can’t do anything about gun control.
Mad way of choosing their leaders leads to mad way of ruling thier country,
Only one person can stop Gaza war she is Kamala Harris. If she will win 100 parcent Gaza war will stop. Every single Muslim should vote for Kamala Harris 💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙😡💙🇺🇸💙👍👍👍👍
That sounds pretty similar to the system that we have in Canada. Slightly different but in the end you don’t necessarily win by having the most votes. Ours is based on the system that they used to and probably still have in the UK. I hate this system and wish it really was just won by the most votes.
I heard once that the system was originally designed by the wealthy country lords, in England, who didn’t want the the poor people living in the cramped cities to have an equal vote to them. So, they designed a system that divided the votes by geographical space, rather than number of people. As individuals sitting on large pieces of land their votes would count for the same as a crowd of people crammed into a piece of land the same size, in the city. It’s just disgusting.
Winner takes all – Unfair system
One man One Vote – Fairer system
Couldn’t be more untrue. 1 man 1 vote would mean that the entire country is just going to do what NY and LA desire (most of our population reside in super left leaning cities)… EC is the most fair way to have everyone’s voice heard in the decision.
They’re funny that way.
And Qatar? What’s al Jazeeras take on Qatar voting for elections?? 😂😂😂
Aljazeera go back to Gaza and continue giving as fake News that is the area your good for
Nothing legally forces electors to vote the way the people vote anyway it’s all 💩
If I’m not wrong
I think it’s same like we in Pakistan elect MPs and MPs elect the prime minister it’s called parliamentarian system. Same thing Americans doing in presidential system isn’t it?
NO Pakistan have UK style democracy or so called democracy
You vote for people who are voting for you, at the end you don’t know who they are voting for.
A lot of ignorance in the comments here… The reason the Electoral College needs to be is because most of our population resides in a few major cities and if we did a true 1 person = 1 vote system, our country would always just be doing what people in NY and LA desire…
Policies and way-of-life need to be decided upon by all and this is a perfect way to even the playing field to have a fair election.
Perfect example is gun abolishment: Guns are dangerous in major cities, but are absolute necessities in isolated places like counties in Montana or the Dakotas where you can encounter bears/mountain lions at anytime and need protection. Should someone living 3,000 miles away in different living conditions abide by laws made for inner city violence problems? That would be a horrible system. Simple math.
Thanks for the clarification. It’s a difficult math for who doesn’t reside in USA or doesn’t know the geography based population of the country.
@@enjoidvs05 false. BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO IDEA and CAN NOT ASSUME that everyone in NYC or LA will vote for a specific person/party. It just aligns that way. This whole idea that two cities would dictate the outcome is so stupid. If there are 1000 people in the US and 75% like Dem policies, it doesn’t matter where tf they live because they will always like those policies. I’ve moved all over the US/world. I’m an independent. Where I reside has never changed my outlook but this idea that “you live in LA so you must vote X way” is such a farce.
That way historically*
Not to mention how tf is the electoral college any different then the fear of “big cities” being the deciding factor. In the case of the electoral college, swing states are quite literally the exact same thing. So we are continually governed by a select geographical group yet again. At least the popular vote is clear, concise and fair across all metrics. Individual opinion, invidividual vote, individual count. Shoot you can’t even predict who the electoral college will vote for because it’s not even required that they vote for who they pledge for (though it would be political suicide otherwise). So we literally vote just to vote but the truth is we hope and pray and leave it to a smaller group of people to actually make the big decision in the end……
Further more using the example presented out of Texas. 5.8 va 5.2 million. 38 electoral votes. So even though the race was borderline 50% meaning the state literally is not as clear and cut republican as we assume. They get 100% of the votes because they earned like 5% more votes? You just muted 5.2 million people this way over a state that nearly voted 50/50…MAKE THAT MAKE SENSE
And they are forcing democracy around the globe 😂
DC should not have any votes, period. No statehood, either. It is against the constitution, and the dems know it. It needs to be fixed.
@cliffkemp The 23rd Ammendment grants D.C. its electoral votes.
@@jghillasthat it does against itself. It’s a ‘fix’ that isn’t constitutional in itself, after the fact…. despite being an easy fix. Ask yourself why that amendment was necessary…
That is not a democracy.
Is this what the US says Democracy?
Thanks for the best explanation I have seen so far
So in other words Electoral votes are all that matters. Reality is your votes don’t mean s**t . ” Winner Takes All “
Here’s what everyone forgets about the U.S.A we are like not France,Germany or any other country it 50 individual state that have there own law and governments that came together for the common good. with out the electoral collage the smaller states with a lower population would never have agreed to join if they have no say in government cause the larger states would be the only ones that would truly have a voice so this was a brilliant compromise
@@Ricardo-h7m they have less votes and less electoral college power lol. This benefits the larger states only.
The Electoral College is a terrible system to still be using. Unfortunately, it still allows for minority rule by one of the two major political parties.
1st of all start election’s in qatar & then speak….😅😅😅😅about election’s & democracy😅😅😅😅
