What compromise will it take to stop sending money to a corrupt, cocaine addicted midget dictator and let the Russian SMO take its course? Russia’s goals remain the same – to destroy Ukraine’s ability to fight, to create a buffer zone to prevent further attacks, and to change the regime so no Nazis/Bandaraists live free. If negotiations can help Russia meet those goals, Putin will negotiate. If not, he’ll continue until he has Odessa and Kyiv is dust. Pretty simple.
I find it curious that talk of ending the war in Ukraine seems to expect ‘compromises’, meaning giving Putin some face saving reward. What is also curious is that these notions invariably come from non Ukrainian people, those that have not had to live through the atrocities and destruction from Russian military. Could it be that Putin is getting his wish, that the west is in fatigue of the war, and will choose to ignore what the Ukrainian people have endured, all for some convenient prospect of renewing Russian energy. Ukraine will never be safe from Putin unless strong support is maintained from the west. If complacency is allowed to invade foreign policy, then Putin will continue to interfere and agitate throughout Europe, as he is already doing, and cowardly assumptions that he can simply be ignored is a route to disaster. Putin has no problem with using violence to achieve his ambitions, which will remain his modus operandi, and talking about cosy ‘negotiations’ is the kind of weakness he uses against those that fail to understand the consequences.
Imagine it is now forced to peace talks and men lost lives for nothing…Absolutely pointless! Ukraine people were very weak to allow Zel to lead them in to this nonsense.
Zelensiky presidentancy campaign was for peace with Russia, when elected he did the opposite, the citizens had no say.
Ukraine is irrelevant. She served the West only to weaken Russia according to a pre-planned plan, and Merkel herself admitted it. Now some Englishman says that all Ukrainian land will return except for Crimea, which is Russian anyway. Nothing will be returned because there was an offer of no war in exchange for autonomy, but it was not accepted in Ukraine, in fact in Europe and America. The point of negotiation is that the liberated territories are Russia. Autonomy within a neutral Ukraine is given to regions with a Russian population that have not been liberated, Ukraine’s neutrality in joining NATO EU and Ukraine’s demilitarization. In order to successfully negotiate, you have to win the war, and Ukraine failed to do so, even though it was helped by NATO, Europe and America in manpower, satellite data, technology and all types of assistance that the West considered necessary. Whoever loses has the right to be angry.
So now, after almost 3 years of killings these men come to the conclusion that Ukraine must be independent and a great autonomy for the Russian speaking majority in the Donbass. That is exact what Putin asked from the beginning. But Washington wanted Ukraine into NATO, knowing that this demand would trigger war with Russia.

Should go back to the Minsk Agreement and use that as the basis to form the agreements. NATO must stay neutral, and NATO must not expand eastwards. Otherwise, it won’t work.
The ex ambassador truly summed up the problem. A neutral, complete independent and sovereign Ukraine but no NATO membership. The difficult question to solve would be as to how much would be the size of the Ukrainian armed forces and can the West arm and train this force.
