Thousands of complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau about American Home Shield, one of the country’s biggest home warranty companies. They include a Las Vegas couple who complained after the company denied their claim for an air conditioning repair. The company says it believes “the correct coverage decision was made” but says it will fix the unit at no cost. NBC News’ Vicky Nguyen reports.

#HomeWarranty #AmericanHomeShield #Complaint
Never buy anything like extended warranty on any purchase. Save your cash for future repairs.
I love how they so graciously said they would fix it at no cost yet. He’s been paying premiums to them so there is a cost and they’re only doing this so they can get some good PR in a bad news story on them
They paid about $10 a month for 3 years and expected a $5000 air conditioner.
I had this company in Lincoln Nebraska came with the house. We bought everything they worked on. I had to fix after they were done and they flooded our kitchen. It was such a nightmare to deal with these people stay away, just my opinion.
It’s a useless company. You’re better off saving what you would make to payments to them and use that to pay for repairs themselves. Replacing a central home A/C unit is something like $6,000. Of course they’re not going to replace it.
Insurance objectives is to take money in and not put it out.
AHS Sucks!, They used to call my Company when I worked as an Electrician, They would do everything they could to get out of doing any repairs!, Even paying our Service Calls!, The Boss quit taking any AHS calls!, Lots of companys won’t deal with them, They should be put out of business!!
Normal wear and tear should not be insured. It is known and predictable. Save the premium and buy a new one when old one tapped out. No one insures a car for wear and tear.
An emergency fund is a much better investment than these crooked home warranty companies.
@@raphaeldelaghetto85 100%
1,000% correct. Take that monthly payment you’re sending them and drop it in an account getting you 4% interest. When repairs are needed, you’ll have an account with at least $3K in it, which is way better than these scam insurance companies.
They don’t have any problems taking your money but when it’s time to pay up they find every reason not too. This is a criminal enterprise.
They kept going up on my rates. Once it got to $100 a month. The $1200 plus service calls cost. I can get a new one appliance myself.
Legal theft! Welcome to America!
*I remember in 1999 at Best Buy the cashier explaining an “extended warranty” (new concept at the time) … I laughed hysterically… surley the masses couldn’t be this gullible… well 25 years later this* 😅
Hysterically. Give it a rest. You just didn’t take the warranty and left.
I’ve had extended warranties on 2 used cars. Both paid out for repairs with no issues. Small 50$ deductible too. Long time ago though.
These type of companies have been notorious for shading business. Nothing new. I remember having appliance insurance paid for by the seller of my house. After the sale was complete, I quickly called the appliance insurance company, canceled, and got a refund for the remaining life of the policy. Never had any issues with the appliances or HVAC even though they were old.
Wow, can’t believe this is still going on. 20 years ago I had a warranty with AHS cause it came with the house I bought. AC broke and it was over 95 degrees in the house. They wouldnt fix it.
So thats where D list actors end up, selling their soul to the devil.
Reviews are often faked. Beware.
Never go with these “home warranty” companies they refuse to fix anything. When my ac broke they didn’t want to fix it at all . and you still have to pay fees for them to show up might as well just pay the cost yourself cuz you’re going to have to anyways just giving some friendly advice
Yeah you guys shouldn’t fall for that old-fashioned scam that still works today!
READ YOUR CONTRACT. Come on people, paying $75-150 mo for a home warranty? Do you really expect a full AC replacement? A fix maybe. I would rather save that money and fix/replace items as they break. Do you really need insurance for when the dishwasher, refrigerator, range, water heater stops working? That’s what an emergency fund is for.
Too much insurance for every little thing. Insurance for your phone, trip/flight insurance, home warranties, low deductible car insurance, auto warranties. Mostly a waste. Cover things where an incident can make you broke and homeless: Health ins, life ins, auto, fire, bus liability, disability ins.
Preach my brother
Shocker…
I can confirm the “not normal wear and tear” lie that they use to deny claims.
warranties and insurance is nothing but legalized ponzi schemes
From what was shown, that blower was dirty from lack of MAITAINENCE (what did the coils look like inside…probably plugged from excessive dirt). I think there is a lot of ignorance out there. A Warranty is NOT a replacement for a regular SERVICE contract (or user maintenance). Many items require periodic service to prevent damage. Air filters, oil and filter, brakes and tires. The warranty is for when normal maintenance would not prevent early failure.
If it sounds too good to be true
We have this impression that if something critical fails, like a refrigerator, or heat, domestic hot-water, or Air-Conditioning, that the warranty company will send someone to look at it, and fix things within an hour or two. This is definitely not the case. Getting them to acknowledge an issue takes at least a day, scheduling a repair provider (which is often the most poorly rated on yelp), takes another 2 days, and then the fight for upsell, parts coverage, etc. It’s just not worth it. At some point you’d sooner call a repair provider on your own, and get it solved quickly….but then you’re digging your heels in and saying “what am I paying the warranty company for?”
0:35 Solar panels on the roof! Why are those A/C units on the roof and not the ground? Those are supposed to be ground units in the shade. ✊️🤣👍
@Plutogalaxy Use your real name, boy. Also, use your brain, boy. That’s a residential district where A/C units are on the ground under some shade, but it has been redirected to a business district for the police to claim rights to patrol. 👍 Uranus
Yep, had experience with them in Fort Worth TX, AC went out and they would not replace it or fix it had to spend 10k on a new unit. That was 25 years ago and haven’t bought a warranty since. I stopped buying other warranties in 1988 and I’ve saved over $100,000 since then even if you include repairs and replacements I’ve had to pay for. It’s just a bad deal not matter how you look at it. Paying in advance for something that “might” happen is dumb.
For-profit insurance underwriting is the biggest scam in human history. Let me ask you what is the product/service that is being sold? A big fat “what if”…so it is fear. Can you put a price on making the fear go away? Apparently for-profit insurance can!!
Charitable insurance companies of old with generous coverage and close to 100% payout that can barely turn a profit have been ran out of the underwriting market by the national name brand scammers.
All warranties are scams. Insurance is the same. They are out to make money, not help people. If they approve every request, they don’t make money.
All of these insurances are scams. AFLAC is the worst. Why would anyone think a company would actually be there to help them? Best thing to do is take the money which you would pay them and put it in a savings account or open a Robinhood account and let your money work for you until you need it.
I’m shocked to hear the insurance company denied the claim
Home insurance policies are not worth it. Putting the money into an investment account get you greater returns.
This happened to me this summer. They’re liars.
Warranties are cash grabs. Just put that money in a rainy day fund and plan on annual maintenance expenses. All they do is lie, deny, and cheat.
Complaintshellter NYC staff are hateful and treacherous 😢😷👎🤢⚕️
Did they really use a comedian? who would want a company that looks like it’s being advertised by SNL
EVERY insurance company refuses claims.
What is the point of reading all the reviews of insurance companies. They are all the same. Only waste of time.
Put your $$$ in a savings every month for home repairs. Might not cover the whole cost but at least you don’t get ripped off by these insurance companies.
American Home Shield is a crock. Had it once and they took care of a bad appliance in the house we bought, then denied every claim afterward, till we finally cancelled since we were paying for nothing.
Insurance is a scam glad to take your monies but time to pay out hum😂😂😂😂
I must agree with AHS on the Sanchez case based on this NBC report. Homeowners must maintain their appliances and equipment. Failure to do so will void NY warranty coverage. An AC unit must be cleaned and inspected annually for a warrantyto remain valid. This NBC report did not reveal if the Sanchez family properly maintained the failed AC unit.
Think of it this way….. If you fail to change the oil in your new vehicle and it runs dry due to a slow leak several thousand miles past the required oil change interval, destroying the engine, the vehicle warranty will be voided.
Read the fine print. Manufacturer recommended maintenance is mandatory for extended warranty protection.
I worked for them as one of their technicians for plumbing. Whole thing is a massive money grab. They are also trying to buy there contractors so they make money when they don’t cover the things they say they will.
NEVER, EVER PAY FOR ANY KIND OF WARRANTY SCHEMES…!
YOU WILL LOSE EVERY TIME!
HomeWarranty is a scam just like any other. Get an inspection FIRST BEFORE YOU BUY…
As honest as Car Shield . Unfortunately , there is a sucker born every minute .
Cheaper to self insure
If you have to rewire your house every twenty years, you didn’t hire an electrician, you hired a QUACK!!!
AHS, total trash company. I had a policy through them which was a throw-in for a house a bought. Air conditioner had problems… they sent a guy out to give an estimate. He came, left, didn’t give us an estimate or fix anything. The contact information for the guy was wrong. He was never in business. He was uncontactable. We paid $100 for that “one-time service fee”. AHS said since *they* couldn’t contact *their contractor*, that we would have to pay again for them to send someone else out. Awful company.
Also amusing is that I got an AHS ad before this NBC News video on YouTube.
In my past experiences with #AmericanHomeShield… they consistently refused to honor the #HomeWarranty that was paid during house closing. They are absolutely worthless! Save your money.
Scam. Throw the official looking “final warning” notices in the trash.
Useless. I dropped them.
I stopped paying this company and started to save towards emergency funds… this company did not repair my dishwasher, I had to repair it myself.
Yup, they are scum. Vegas area residents as well. We told them exactly our problem was and they said they’d need to send someone out for the fee. Fine. Fee paid. Guy shows up and says the problem was not insured despite us mentioning it in the call. After that, I was done with them.
All 3rd party warranty companies are dumpster fires and should be avoided
Insurance is a scam
They are crooks will take your money then when you call they don’t service your area. Facts!! Do not use them!!!
They are all BS companies!! Only there for profit, I have a friend that has a home warranty that a;ways has to fight to get things fixed. Not worth the cost nor hassle
When are people going to wise up to these scams? All of those extended auto warranty companies have been exposed. That’s why you no longer see Car Shield ads. This is the same thing except it’s homes.
Think about it, every home has repairs. AHS is guaranteed to payout on every single subscriber if they accept every claim. In order to make a profit, they’ll have to charge you more every month than you repair. These warranty companies just don’t make sense.
My wife wanted me to sign up for something like this. I didn’t know if it was AHS or not. No matter, it just didn’t seem like it made sense. You’re going to cover all of my appliances and you don’t even know what the status of the appliance is? I just assumed it was a scam and never signed up. Glad to see my instincts were right.
Fools and their money are soon separated.
legalrightsguru AI fixes this (AI Consumer Rights Memos). Thousands of complaints about warranty company.
Pro Tip: Do not purchase any warranty programs. Take that monthly amount of money they would cost you and bank it, and then fix your stuff yourself from that account. IOW, be your own insurance.
service contracts, ect ect
No warranty or insurance company covers you 100%.
Basically a insurance company refusing to pay legitimate claims. Imagine that 😂
Scam scam all scams!!
I had the exact same issue years ago with this company….. they sent a plumber to fix a simple issue (I didn’t have the right tools to fix it) and he only made the problem worse. Turned a $300 issue into a $4000 issue. I canceled my warranty with a quickness.
Greed comes in many forms.
These companies are scams! As first time homeowners, my wife and I paid a home warranty company (that’s now out of business) full price to install a new HVAC system.
It was a complete nightmare for almost a year! Flooding, improper installation, overseas customer service, no permits, and that’s just the tip. It took contacting the city, AC manufacturer (Trane, which had great customer service), and the BBB for the home warranty company to properly install the AC they were paid thousands for.
After seeing the bang up job they did after being paid thousands, we had ZERO faith in their home warranty coverage being worth it.
Even pre existing, that’s bull I’ve been turned down twice for existing repairs.
Same thing happened with my parents. Same excuse they used with my folks AC.
The company suddenly decides to “honor the mans policy” when a major media outlet investigates = actions of a guilty corporation.
Realtors,Always want these warrantys ,for the buyer! Knowing they are trash !🙄🤷🏾♀️
They use unlicensed clowns who speak no English and carry no tools in vans. They use only the cheapest losers that show up to your house.
Car shield preys on foolish minorities and broke losers looking for someone else to pay their breakdowns.
Sears used to have a good plan for appliance repairs. This was in the early 2000s when I was a teen. My mom had the fridge fixed several times and the repairman did actually replace faulty parts lol
This home warranty company is the worst one you can get I had them for years and they never fix anything everything is you didn’t maintenance it or some other crap. I had a pool pump go out where there’s no maintenance and it broke and they said I didn’t maintenance it there was nothing to maintain so I quit them and now I have $4,000 and a separate savings account to fix anything I need that I saved from not using them
Much better in Mexico. Your not required to have home insurance
A fool and his money is soon parted. Shut these jokers down.
I had a co-worker use them 10 years ago they totally ruined her home air conditioner with a half azz fix and had to be sued to clear things up. If it sounds to good to be true it usually is.
Debri on an outdoor AC unit is not normal?
These types of legit scam businesses will continue to exists because people are gullible and will never take the time to research. That’s why the rest of us have to deal with their stupid marketing mail and phone calls. So many scams would just stop existing if Americans weren’t so dumb.
All these companies are a scam, just out what you would pay them into a savings account for and use that for repairs/replacements.
All Car, home, and health insurance companies are aware that 95% of Americans will never properly maintain or perform maintenance on their cars, homes, and health.
Me too!!
You guys need to do a story about how that accommodation is just to buy him out – the warranty co doesn’t want him to be a rallying cry for the other disgruntled homeowners and have a stronger public reaction against them.
Insurance companies have no issue taking your money but balk when they need to pay out.
Scammmmmms. Don’t use em.
I never ever buy these types of insurance do to the hidden fine print. Save what you would have paid to the insurance company to a rainy day fund.
Wow.
Looks like we need government to protect us with regulations and oversight.
I don’t think the recently elected admin is on board with that, quite the opposite actually.
Glad i install and fix my own
car shield also a scam
Interesting
AIG travel insurance is a rip off also.
Home warranty is a scam
I never heard of any positive things about American Home Shield, always a scam. They don’t allow people to read their lengthly contract until stupid people purchase their policies.
Oh no, you had to live on the first story of your two story home. How tragic.
People get greedy!!!
