Generation Z and millennials are visiting libraries at a higher rate than older generations, according to a new study by the American Library Association.

Anyone believing this?
Nope. Probably is a lie because if it is untrue what ramifications would there be for lying? None.
Absolutely, it makes intuitive sense. Even if you don’t think younger generations would have the desire to go to a library purely for enjoyment, it’s simply a fact of the matter that high school and college age students will have more need to use the facilities, particularly as a place to study.
I think so because of the space and resources it offers
@@Catscan894 I know the homeless here in Ca who use them, think so.
@@creativealias85 I’m in Los Angeles. We only see tweakers sleeping at/ in front of them.
I’m a millennial and I take my kids to the library twice a month and they absolutely love it. Also, it’s cheap!
we go as often as we can. There’s always an indoor play area for the kids when the weather is bad.plus ours has free events each month , and of course they love bringing home new books
I wish they would return the copy of “The Miracle of Male Birth”. I really want to read that while I dress as Mrs. Busty Santa No Pants.
I still have a book return from 1983.. I’m sure the fine is in the 6 figures by now.
@NHLblkgurl I have a copy of “A Wrinkle In Time” that I checked out of one of those mobile library vans from the 80s. I still remember it was an old FedEx or UPS vehicle converted into a roaming Library. They’d come once every other week and I never seemed to be around so I couldn’t return it. Then we loved. At the time, in 1987 I had racked up $1.00. It was was nickel every two weeks the book was late.
As a writer and avid reader i applaud this news, Youth reading more is a dream come true and not just because its good for business.
That’s only because they thrive on anything free!!
Yeah, because they’re younger and have the time to do so.
No wonder the GOP want to ban books🤔🤔
Yeah, I used to sleep and live in the library during college, but then when I came back this year parking now became fee and my days spending like 6-8 hours in the library are now over 🙁
Good place to make out
Now we know why the younger folks hang out in the library. Get that American Library Association.
With what schools teach now days I’m surprised gen z and millenials can even read. Maybe it’s just picture books, video games, and how to be selfish books they look at. It certainly doesn’t seem to be educational reading.

I love my small town library its awesome. You can check out books, CDs and DVDs. You can use internet and printer, which is great i dont have computer. Book and craft events. You find info on anything and they like loan between libraries. I ❤ books and I ❤ librarys. If your poor the possiblites for services is awesome.
I’m LATE Gen X and I go to either the library or my locally owned bookstore at least once a week. I’m even part of a book club. We’re called ‘The Readers For Life’! 📚 📕 📖
Toss-up between library and McDonalds.
I am curious to know what books Gen Z is reading.

What are they studying? Which gender they are?
The leadership of the American Library Association are unashamedly Marxist. They are the reason that there is pornographic materials seeping into the classroom.
Corporate showing good children’s how they are not team players. To justify useless corporations bottleneck scam they’ve made for self at top.
if true….this is fantastic!!
There is nothing like having a physical book in your hands ❤
Nothing like it!
I’m like this but with comic books
Still a lower turnout to libraries than ever before though….left that part out.
Just miserable for no reason
This comment makes no sense at all
@@CocoaSmith-bp6sg why are you miserable?
@chandelier6811 maybe you should goto the library more, your comprehensive skill will improve.
@@kingphilwill The problem with your comment isn’t the language, it’s the math. Millennials are the largest generation in the United States and genz is very large as well, and these generations are reading at higher levels the math doesn’t add up to there being a lower library turnout, and the statistics back me up a study found library visits are at higher levels than ever.
I don’t believe the American library associations numbers.
I’m a child-free millennial who visits the library at least twice a month. I love checking out cookbooks, coffee table books, magazines, and movies that are trending before buying them. There are so many kind and helpful people who work there. It’s so peaceful there so always enjoy going even just to pick things up. My grandmother and I YEARS ago used to volunteer at the library which was so fun as a kid.
Libs have perverted books in libraries
Good job to the parents pushing their children to read more!! 📚
I love the library and bookstores. Gen Z and millennials like all forms of media. Reading, TV, Video Games, and Social Media. We are not stupid like so many older generations think we are. Also, a possible reason for people perceiving Gen Z and millennials “reading less” might be school work is amped up higher than ever, and people want to socialize.
Older generations like old man on the porch Bill Maher. Young people are very knowledgeable!
The digital detox is a strong argument. I think it explains a lot.

What’s this please? Never heard this term. Thx.
deffo means definitely <3

- mico, a man part of gen z (: age 18 🙂
I buy all my books mostly only history interest me but a big stephen king fan also..I have at least 20 books from the library I haven’t returned though lol
libraries modernized and now seamlessly allow users to hold, track, renew, and return books and other media so easily. it’s like a shopping app. i have no doubt this is a major reason why the interest has gone up a lot. so keep investing in tech.
Fantastico!

Very funny. I (a millennial) don’t care for libraries and haven’t been to one since high school and my gen z kids don’t care either. They prefer Kindle and online resources. I also know zero gen z kids who partake in libraries. Too manystrbtng hmlss.
I go for peace and quiet. And to take a break from the world.
Yes
so *what* do they read?
😂😂😂😂. Yeah I think they missed that part of the story.
Glad they are. Boomers don’t go as much we buy our books
good info ..thx ..fits right in with my study 👍
Take that boomers!
I’m commenting from the public library right now. But I’m not young.
With all the GQP MAGA nonsense such as banning books, restricting curriculum, etc going on with many school boards in red states, it is encouraging to see that many students are taking matters in their own hands and seeking out reading material at public libraries. Expand your mind!

This is great 😊
How the turn tables…

NBC news since youve been ordered to suppress all border, inflation, crime, biden investigation etc etc , is there a news source you recomend the people watch to be updated on all the isssues you are trying to cover up? Not including your sleazey affilliate msnbc, of course. Youre not fooling anyone, we know who you report to.
As millennial , who volunteered at the library at school , hung out at the library after school. Our also had a park. The library is one of the best third places to go.
Thank god I’m not the only one
Um, the libraries are where junkies and homeless people live around here.
They need to be checking out George Orwell books like we all used to have to do in high school.
They should be mandatory reading in high school so young people are not brainwashed by smooth-talking Marxists and leftist propaganda.
Reading a actual book quietly no messages popping on a page is very relaxing and calms me down from being stressed all day.
Its the only thing our generations can afford to do..
Sounds strange to me. I rarely see younger people in my library only the Silent Gen and the Baby Boomers who check out books. Librarians and book owners complain that only the older generations are interested in books and the younger generations no longer.
As a millennial, I’m shook. I would have bet money that libraries would be an ancient folk tale by 2025.
I thought so too until I decided to go to one and was incredibly surprised to see it packed full of people. Most libraries also have free computers and wifi so thats probably another reason for the increased visitation.
@@fatboyRAY24There’s so much stuff that was never put on the Internet. I have to go to libraries to be able to find much of the information I am looking for, because the vast majority of books have not been made into eBooks and it would be too expensive for me to buy every book I want to look through to complete my research.
So why are they so biased and hateful reporting they are stupid using Tik Tok for info?
There are ONLY TWO Books you Need to Read. The “Bible” and “Racism”…..Then you will know everything you need to Know.
And the world is still flat😂😂
Are the youth going to the library to read or are special interest communities meeting at libraries which is were the youth meet up at?
That’s a distinction without a difference. It’s not a special interest to be involved in a community or association, that’s just pluralism.
Well how expensive everything is , libraries are one of the only free things to do
Yes da to get on there phone because it’s quiet.
Reading is an escape
South Park Satan episode
Not a surprise honestly. Older generations don’t believe in books or education and it shows
I’m a millennial. I use the library all the time, not necessarily for the materials, but just so I can have a quiet place to think.
I also think it’s important to have a “third place” — preferably, one that is not a business. With the huge amount of bedroom communities that were built in the past few decades, our society is losing our “third places.” I remember growing up in the 90s and having access to parks, playgrounds, the town square, the library, etc. In abundance. Now, we spend all of our time either at work/school, or at our suburban homes, going directly between the two and never interacting with the world outside of it. Access to libraries can help buck that trend, but honestly, I suspect this problem will get worse before it gets better.
The local libraries are my families “third place”.
It’s one of the few places left you can go without the expectation of spending money. 3rd places have disappeared for young people to go
This story makes absolutely no sense. They visit at higher rates because they have nothing else to do….DUH. I’m a GenX’er. WE GREW UP HAVING TO GO TO THE LIBRARY, because there was no other choices to find information. To Z’s and millennials it’s a new oddity, a new fad. I think we’re soon getting to the story where someone finds out there’s a liquid that you can drink if you take away all the flavorings and coloring that tastes pretty good and it’s healthy. Looks just like the stuff that comes out of the faucet. 🤦♂️
♟we control the shift 🌎
good place to study, relax, chill, and do nothing without feeling like you have to buy something.
I frequently spend my free time volunteering at my local library because things like video games or social media aren’t fun for me and, because I have a heavy schoolwork load, it’s nice to get out and be working somewhere quiet where my work is actually worth something.
Yeah. You can read and rent movies literally for free. My kids love playing puzzles and whatnot at the library.
It’s because we can’t afford to buy books.
Interesting.
I read banned books , thate the GOP try to ban.👍
Finally something good the old generation find it in us
What a happy day 🎉
In my native city, I really liked visiting the library, because it was situated next to an internet cafe, had books in Ukrainian and other languages and had a kids sections where there were so many free activities hehe ❤
oh that’s surprising!
talk about a waste of time. what other useless things are useless people “studying”
probably there to spark the owl
Now they just need to learn that they’re supposed to be quiet in the library.
I volunteer in a library and quite a few of the teenagers and even little kids are very well behaved. The adults are typically louder
@@dylanfield7098 I need to go to that library!
“Libraries and reading could provide a non digital alternative for millennials”
Checking out books at the library will work very well if you live near by all the time, do not migrate to another State for work/employment and have the time to wait for a book on reserve and read that book.
If not, then the library has e-books, downloadable audiobooks, music and videos online; and those are much more convenient to get.
I get e-books all the time. Physical books, not so much.
Maybe when I live in one location all the time, I will use the physical library more. But right now, I can’t.
Gen Z here who works at a library! It’s always amusing to see the confusion on the faces of “older” (but not elderly, mostly late 30s-early 50s) people when I tell them what I do for a living. Library? Didn’t those die out years ago? Yet here we are every day, offering better services than ever, while older generations continue to act puzzled as to young people’s behavior. I suppose we’ll never really understand one another 😅
Because it’s the only free thing left.
Lol exactly
probably cus there’s more people alive duh
Cool!
older people bye books at yard sales , for less money, we are just smarter than these bugget-less kids
What the crap? That’s a lot of info in a small number of words.
1:10 When you’re 17 the day before your birthday 😏
Our parents took us to the library!!!! Duhhh
Millennial here. I’m always at the library.
as genz I can confirm I enjoy going to libaries when I can because it’s a good change of scenery it’s quiet its a good way to unwind and disconnect from the outside world and its just comfroting to be some place that has so many differnt types fo books 🙂 sometmes I even see cute service dogs
Libraries now have great activities for teens, and provide safe space where they can socialize with people their age. I think the teens only zone is a great idea. I wish I had that when I was a teen.
I know we’re naturally prejudiced against a lot of terrible new books, but they all fit into our imperfect lives because they’re so bad. For people in my generation, it’s really shocking to see how hard it is for them to understand that an author (for example, a friend who writes) can be a cultural reformer (without asking everyone to imitate him), rather than merely a “mile marker” on the “road of reforms”. Maybe if we allowed there to be any such reforms made, things would get even more dangerous. Maybe that’s why we don’t consider any of our friends to be literary reformers: we simply consider them to be opinionated loudmouths who are a dime a dozen. The problem is that nobody takes his friends seriously about anything. The whole point of the federal backbone was for people to ask each other, “How can we prevent our right to a jury trial from being taken away?”. There are some very DEEP, potentially permanent problems here. People don’t know how to sense whether someone is hoping to be able to remember a moment forever or hoping that he will never remember it again. The whole point of books is lost. We read OUR books, specifically THESE ONES, because they come in tandem with comments such as the one which you have just read. Thank you, have a nice next read. You’re the future, and we all know how bright you are.
Here in Japan inside trains or buses usually it seems that I am the only reading a physical book.
Everybody else seems to have their faces buried in their smartphones.
And ever since the pandemic I have been borrowing books from the public libraries twice a month.
as a millennial, printed books make me concentrate more on reading. but e-books expands accessibility.
Digital books membership or price have gotten out hand so back to free library is good option. But with so many having to move back with parents or grandparents library is good way to get some relaxing and quiet place to get away from people but still be productive.
Libraries are a very important “Third Place” for people these days. There is no money barrier to entry. You don’t need to dress up. You just show up and you are instantly welcomed as a member of the community. I’m not surprised they are more popular than ever. It isn’t just the physical books, it’s the place you go to see other humans who have no expectations of you.
I’m a late millenial (born in the lovely 90s) and I have my own really big book collection at home. I’m very grateful that my grandparents and parents introduced me in the magnificient world of reading! I will never give it up
Thank god. Good news for once.
I just went today and make an effort to go every Wednesday. They have their old movies for sale in a bin for $1. Today was the start of their end of year sale. 1/2 off I got 10 movies for $5. I’ve found some gems in there.
