What is Climate Change? | Start Here

The hard facts about global warming – a defining issue of our time.
Climate change is happening now, and even world leaders meeting for climate talks at this year’s Cop25 know we aren’t doing enough to stop it.
In fact, we’re going backwards. The UN says carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere are going up, and the earth is on track to warm by 3.2 degrees before the century is over. The consequences of that acceleration are already proving disastrous for communities around the world.
This week’s episode of Start Here cuts through the science and the politics, to get you what you need to know about what’s at stake for the planet.

because of dumb people we all going to suffer.

  • Edward Dongres says:

Why are alarmists unable to debate the issue? Where is the warming? We heat with renewable solar energy, stored in the firewood. But last few years we have to cut increasingly more. Now about 30% more than 20 years ago.  We used to have some three month of hot weather to go swimming. That shrunk to perhaps a week of really hot weather, not long enough to warm up the lakes. Ocean rising? Really, where? Why would government invested hundreds of millions to rebuild New Orleans, a city under sea level to begin with?  Why would smart money invest in places like Maldives hotels and resorts, a place not much more than flat sand bars in Indian Ocean?  Or Florida  ocean front properties.

  • Maqsood ayaz says:

We should have sanctions on every country which produces CO2 in higher amounts. The sanctions will remain until they start to take part in reducing emissions by at least 50%.

Everyone wants to have a piece of paper aka Money but one day the paper will be in hand but there will be no planet to buy.

    • Setzer K says:

Maqsood ayaz The issue is some countries make a ton of goods for everyone else like China. Put sanctions on’em & it won’t end well

  • PopJazzOnline.com - Piano Courses Online says:

Here is the solution, especially if you’re living in a rich country: Consume less!

I reduced my personal carbon footprint by 70% by changing my lifestyle. Can you do the same?
    1. For 3 years I’ve been a vegetarian.
    2. In 2019, I didn’t travel by airplane. I won’t in 2020 either. It’s an addiction, even I LOVE to travel by plane.
    3. I ditched my gasoline car for an electric car that I travel with instead of the Airplane-trips. A trip from Norway to the south of Spain for a family of 4 is 14000 times more polluted if you travel by airplane than if you’re going with your electric car. The best thing to do is to not go at all.
    4. In 2019 I didn’t buy any clothes. In 2020 I bought the clothes I need for all of this year.
    5. I moved my family from a big house to an apartment 1/3 the size.
    6. Voting for the politicians who are the most environmentally friendly.

I’m always amazed to speak to my friends who travel frequently around the world, they eat meat multiple times per week, never thinking of their impact.
It is as if the global warming issue is only up to politicians to fix, but the politicians are more concerned about their own survival in the political game. Why is it so cheap to do the most pollutive actions, such as flying? Money speaks, unfortunately.
Also, most climate influencers are hypocritical with their HUGE personal footprints.

As David Attenborough said: “We can’t go on saying ‘but there’s hope’ and leave it to next year”

Disclaimer: All of the above may seem like bragging. Normally, I would not speak out loud about things like this. I wrote it still, as we need to hurry up. I’d love to travel more by plane, eat meat, buy whatever I want etc. like I used to. Can’t justify it. Not anymore.

    • Ronald Lee says:

      You are amazing!

    • Ricky Demetro says:

I’d rather be dead than give up meat. I like my big house and I want to have lots of children.

    • K A says:

You sound like a good obedient slave. Keep obeying, paying taxes, and voting for the elite who lie to you about the environmental impacts while they themselves fly on private jets and spend their time in large luxury resorts.

    • Setzer K says:

K A Any solutions to fix that?

    • Nachannachle says:

      Here is my feed:
      1. Been a pescetarian for 10 years.
      2. Been a pure vegetarian for 5 years.
      3. Bought a house 10 mins walk from work.
      4. Removed all water-demanding plants from my house.
      5. Grows some of my vegetables using water-wise containers
      6. Use gas for cooking/water heating.
      7. Flies for a max of 6 hours return-trip once every 2 years.
      8. Does not buy food/arts/gifts that are not local/nationally made.
      9. Does not have kids.
      10. Does not invest in the S&P500 nor mining stocks.

Going minimal is easy to put into place, but I see most people like to do what everyone else around them does. I’m glad to be who I am and not giving a hoot about the Jones.

  • keith W says:

“The UN says that warming of 1.5 degrees would be all right” – No, it most certainly does not ” …and even 2 degrees would probably be all right” Again, that is such green -wash!
    So trite.
Just the small matter of the ruling elite voluntarily giving up wealth, ditching the crazy growth economic model for an ecological one and leave all the petro-carbons in the ground. No small feat.

  • Greg Lawson says:

  • Infinite Singh says:

Climate change concept is a biggest scam in order to control developing nations development. COUNTRIES like USA Sweden Canada all developed countries are producing alot of waste and in return want others to stop their development. Nothing is going to happen.

  • Lasha Chakhunashvili says:

If you want to combat climate change (or more precisely – its effects), start with getting rid of (meaning not giving them platforms for spewing nonsense) people like Greta Thunberg with their apocalyptic (thus unscientific) narratives.

  • Vadim Sharov says:

climate change is a big fake. humanity has saved the biosphere. Trillions of tons of carbon were seized from the atmosphere in the form of shells, coal and oil. It is necessary to return to the atmosphere as much carbon as possible in order to maintain life.

  • Mikki O says:

  • Charleston Tea says:

They just refuse to believe that water and ice migrated around the globe 🌏. You think they built cities under water? Nope! It once was above land and it will return to land. • Christopher Sharrock says:

I have a serious question, though it may not come across that way, I’d be interested if anyone can explain it. Forgive my ignorance.

  • Citizen G says:

Total control of every aspect of people’s lives has always been the dream of governments and the elites that run them. Technology finally is making that dream possible , and the fake climate crisis is the excuse they are using to enact it. People who willingly follow along with the demands of the climate change fear mongers are dutifully marching towards their own enslavement and impoverishment.

  • Shubham Ambekar says:

Have anyone heard about Ecosia the search engine that plants trees?

  • Roskellan says:

Man-made Global Warming is rubbish. Its pseudo science. Its a concept made up by people with an political agenda. That is to say when you predict a disaster, then people have to do stuff they would not normally consider to avoid it. When I was young I was told we were all moving towards another ice age (with conviction), even as a child I new that to be rubbish. Now we have Global Warming. There will always be the sooth sayers spreading doom and gloom, for their own ends – don’t believe them, their track record is appalling.

Your technical explanation is equally flawed. Naturally occuring Climate change has always been with us what you seek to describe is man-made climate change.

    Climate change is not a
problem – in the past it has been both much colder and much hotter than it is
now. This has been due among other things, but mainly related to the Sun, in
one way or another. This is still the case. What you are talking about is man
made climate change – virtually non-existent, don’t worry about it. All the
effects you describe in the past and for the future are the result of natural
climate change. CO2 – a very ineffective green house gas. If you want to talk
about an effective green house gas talk about water vapor (clouds). CO2 is a
trace gas in the atmosphere around 4%. It’s natural for it to be there, in fact
essential that it is there for life on this planet to survive. Most of the CO2
on the planet is in the oceans, when it gets warmer it’s released when it gets
colder its absorbed, not the other way around. CO2 produced by us represents
such a small part of the 4% you can discount it, the output from volcanoes
comes in a poor second place and that way out strips us.

  • Nachannachle says:

“It’s up to all of us”.
Said the reporter from a channel sponsored by one of the biggest oil exporters in the world.
As a 30-something Millennial who grew up under the recycling/Global warming hype, I will be happy to die tomorrow knowing that I have made all efforts and commitments since I was age 11 to live a life with as little a carbon footprint as possible.
But then, I’m African and not much rich, so I can’t really have much of a footprint in the first place. I can only suffer the consequences of what 1st World nation citizens do; but it’s alright, we are used to it.
Keep preaching to the deaf masses though.

WHAT IS JERUSALEMS MOST VALUABLE ASSET? WHERE ARE YOUR HEBREW PROPHETS WHO PROPHECY UNTO YOU? HAVE THERE SINCE 2020 YEARS BEEN ANY NEW REVELATION ABOUT THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN BEEN REVEALED UNTO THE HEBREW SO CALLED CHOSEN PEOPLE OF ISRAEL?

THE EARTH IS IN GREAT DISTRESS, AND I SAW DEATH RIDING A PALE HORSE, AS I STOOD ON THE MOUNTAIN OF DECISION, I SAW THE EARTH CRACK OPEN AND IT STOPED TURNING, AND THE BLUE SHIELD OF EARTH DISSAPEARED, AND THE FIRE FROM BENEATH SURFACED ABOVE THE EARTH.

I ALSO SAW THE SERPENT OF THE GREAT I AM, THE SERPENT OF MOSES, HIS TAIL IS ROOTED IN THE SUN AND HIS HEAD BIT INTO THE EARTH, AND I SAW THE HEAD AND THE TAIL BECAME ONE,

      Why the denial?

  • Alexandru Popescu says:

*TOP 10 FACTS CLIMATE CHANGE FANATICS DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW*

    1. The current global warming started about 12,000 years ago. That’s how the last ice age ended and the current geological period, the Holocene, began. This warm and cozy climate won’t last forever. Interglacial periods last between 20,000 and 60,000 years.

    2. The rate at which the sea level is rising now is much lower compared to how it rose between 12,000 and 7,000 years ago – a period in which the sea level rose by 197 ft (60 m). Look up the *Early Holocene Sea Level Rise* if you want to learn more.

    3. The climate is always changing. There is no such thing as a stable climate. If you want to learn more about the “stability” of the climate, you might want to look up:
    – *The 8.2 Kiloyear Event*
    – *The Little Ice Age*
    – *The Year Without a Summer (1816)*

    4. *Chaos Theory* tells us why the behavior of some systems is unpredictable (chaotic). Even simple systems can exhibit chaotic behavior, like *the double pendulum.* No one can predict the climate, because the climate is a stupidly complex chaotic system.

    5. Compared to water, CO₂ plays an insignificant role in the global greenhouse effect. Because – and I’m not making this up – *95% of all greenhouse gases is water vapor.*

    6. During the *Hirnantian* glaciation the atmospheric CO₂ levels were 10–16 times higher than today.

    7. CO₂ is _not_ a pollutant. CO₂ is plant food. Almost all the oxygen in the atmosphere is a byproduct of photosynthesis – a process by which plants use light energy to produce glucose from CO₂ and water. Without CO₂ plants die. Without plants, we die. CO₂ is used in the food industry, for example, in the production of carbonated beverages like: beer, soda, sparkling water etc. CO₂ is also used in hospitals, for example, in laparoscopic surgery. There are real pollutants out there we should be worried about and CO₂ is not one of them.

    8. Compared to astronomical factors like solar activity or the *Milankovitch Cycles* or terrestrial factors like volcanic activity, human activity has an insignificant effect in the long term evolution of the climate. We cannot start, end, or prevent ice ages or global warmings. We’re not a *type I civilization.*

    9. This may came as a shock to you, but we’re actually in the middle of a 2.58-million-year-old glaciation – the *Quaternary Glaciation* – look it up!

    10. There are many scientists who disagree with various aspects of anthropogenic climate change. One of them is Ivar Giaever, Nobel laureate in physics, who said that “Global Warming is pseudoscience”. Freeman Dyson said that “Climate Change predictions are absurd”. Wikipedia has a *List of scientists who disagree with the scientific consensus on global warming,* but it only contains the names of those scientists “who have their own Wikipedia article.” Keep in mind that science doesn’t work by consensus. Science isn’t a democracy. As Carl Sagan put it:

“Science is more than a body of knowledge. It is a way of thinking; a way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then, we are up for grabs for the next charlatan (political or religious) who comes rambling along.”

In general, when you’re convinced of *your truth,* make an effort to get out of the echo chamber and listen to a skeptic scientist who doesn’t share your beliefs on the subject.

  • Pat James Dan says:

  • Ronbans Gis says:

G8 countries must be take action to alleviate greenhouse effect 😞😞😞😞😞😞😞😞

  • Joe Wood says:

What is climate change, it is when you have a confined environment and you have a species living in it unable to understand where it lives which is of course will result in the destruction of that environment, the evidence that it doesn’t understand where it lives is that iis in the fact it has based it’s policies on endless growth in people living in this confined space.

It as put making money and creating jobs higher on the list than its environment the very thing it relies on for its existence.

you’ve only got a listened to the government of the United Kingdom. they are planning a massive growth programme building more homes creating more jobs.
That policy is not sustainable but your politicians don’t want to understand that. neither do about 98% of the country’s popullation.

if I say let’s have a programme on reducing the population and the benefit it would bring to us and all the other species we share this confined space nobody wants to go there.

until we go there this is just can get worse.

Start your co2 graph 500m yr ago. Its not even predicted to get as warm as 9k yr ago. Is one the coldest periods in 10k yr. This is all delibrate deception.

    • Franz Maier says:

      Not really.

    • SwiftlyTiltingPlanet says:

@Franz Maier 9000 years ago, the Milankovtch Cycles of axial tilt and precession exposed the northern hemisphere to increased solar insolation. Those cycles have long since degraded. There is no deception. All three Milankovitch Cycles today are in phases favoring cooling, not warming.

    • SwiftlyTiltingPlanet says:

500 million years ago there were no land plants to absorb out the excess C02. The super high C02 levels then were also produced by massive tectonic upheaval, which isn’t in play today, making it irrelevant to today’s anthropogenic warming.

  • John Smith says:

cows release 300x more co2 than every other source COMBINED

    • SwiftlyTiltingPlanet says:

      Methane.

  • James Gray says:

That has a lot of cherry picked information… eg: graph at the start, zoom out from 400,000 years to 600 million years, information that we know of. Another cherry picked piece of information is not mentioning what other green house gases there are; eg water (90% of green house gases) and Methane (1% of green house gases) and how much stronger they are at “trapping heat” which technically it doesn’t do, it absorbs it.
Cherry picked no.3, of course urban flooding is getting worse, it’s an urban area! The more you build up the harder it is for water to escape, and as for Venice, that place is a ticking time bomb, it’s been known since the 1950’s that it will sink into the ocean eventually
No.4, using climate activists who receive money for this, using the UN who only look at human caused climate change shutting down a whole range of sciences which may say its impossible, using celebrities who get good press, and using politicians (like Al Gore) who get votes for this, I mean it’s as bad as receiving oil money, really!

    • SwiftlyTiltingPlanet says:

According to the very latest bulletin from the World Meteorological Organization, sea level is now rising an average of 5mm per year, up from 4mm per year just six years ago and 3mm per year in the 1990s. It is accelerating. According to NOAA, high tide flooding all along the American northeast has risen 140% in just 20 years. It’s up 190% along the southeast. Subsidence in some areas (especially along the mid-Atlantic) only makes sea level rise worse.

    • SwiftlyTiltingPlanet says:

Super high C02 from ancient times was emitted from massive tectonic and volcanic upheaval and the breaking up of the super continent of Pangea. Those forces are obviously not at work today, so today’s C02 is coming from another source. Isotopic analysis clearly identifies one third of the C02 in the atmosphere today is from the burning of fossil fuels, not from natural sources.

C02 levels at 280ppm and above historically melt the icecaps. C02 never got above 300 ppm in the height of the Holocene, yet sea level rose 60 meters. That was due to a combination of C02, Milankovitch Cycles, and a few centuries of time. We really don’t want to repeat that, if we can help it.

In 2019, the average annual temperature reached a record high of 7.8 °C (46.0 °F). This is 2°C warming in Moscow in a very short period of time. Caused by burning fossil fuels – coal, petrol and gas. We must stop and turn to harmony with Nature. There are enough technologies which can replace the toxic fossil fuels.

    • Alex Dela Cruz says:

Actually humans do have a part in climate change. When the earth went to the ice age, it was all the carbon being released from volcanoes that helped bring back the earth to a suitable state. So now imagine all that carbon from volcanoes but doubled and spread around the entire world. That’s how we are now. Millions of factories around the world releasing carbon and trapping heat inside the earth. Also the earths tilt changes every couple thousand years which wouldn’t explain how temperatures have rose in only a century.

    • SwiftlyTiltingPlanet says:

All three Milankovitch Cycles (changes in earth’s orbit, axial tilt and precession) are in phases favoring cooling now, not warming. Since the peak warming of the Holocene 6000-8000 years ago, axial tilt has pulled back from 24 degrees to 23.5, and precession has continued to degrade, exposing the northern hemisphere to reduced solar insolation. Today’s warming has nothing to do with earth’s current tilt.

  • DRAGONAUT 88 says:

I just learned the climate change movement is based on a lie and political manipulation.

I do believe we need to do something more on waste and the garbage we produce

    • SwiftlyTiltingPlanet says:

So 97% of publishing climate scientists and the 170 scientific institutions and academies of science who support them are all lying? And your evidence for this is?

    • DRAGONAUT 88 says:

SwiftlyTiltingPlanet The research and evidence has been manipulated and misrepresented. It’s all a political propaganda.

  • MrPorkncheese says:

Only people you guys are fooling are the gullible milennials

    • SwiftlyTiltingPlanet says:

@MrPorkncheese Which means you have no data. Got it.

    • MrPorkncheese says:

@SwiftlyTiltingPlanet Not only is the 97% consensus a lie it’s a poor argument.
100% of scientists thought the world was flat… WRONG
100% of scientists thought the universe revolved around the earth… WRONG
100% of scientists believed in regeneration… WRONG
All through history this has occurred. So u see, the 97% doesn’t mean anything at all.

    • SwiftlyTiltingPlanet says:

@MrPorkncheese It’s a “poor argument” only because you’re unable to fight it and so beat up straw men in its place. There was no consensus of thousands of scientists and scientific institutions who thought the world was flat or that the universe revolved around the earth or that organisms could regenerate. A handful of self -educated autodidacts and religious people? Yes. A mass consensus of PhD-level scientists and institutions with the empirical evidence contained in what is now over 100,000 peer-reviewed studies, as we find in climate science? No.
Here are all the scientific institutions who disagree with you:

  • John says:

Climate change is not man made, the science is distorted for political gain and money and ultimately to control freedom. Look at the politicians handling COVID-19, the science does not support many of the actions but control of freedom.

    • John says:

Saying it does not make it true. Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543) an astronomer proposed that the Earth was not stationary and the center of the universe but orbited the sun. However, politicians and majority of the population persecuted him for his junk science. A scientific fact cannot be changed by political will or majority ruled but the truth can be suppressed – e.g. man made global warming. Now COVID-19 management varies from country to country and state to state. Some countries e.g. Sweden allowing their citizens to take personal responsibilities and go out while California is locking people up for going out. Some countries advise 6 feet apart others 5 feet and others 3 feet. Where is the science? Just like global warming it is politically driven not based on science. As a side note, COVID-19 and most flus do not like warm weather.

    • John says:

Since 2003, the statistical methods used by the IPCC to create the “hockey stick” has been exposed as fundamentally flawed and more devastatingly called into question the entire statistical basis on which the IPCC construct their case.

“Climategate” exposed the ruthless way in which the IPCC academics have silenced any expert questioning the IPCC findings arrived by non-scientific methods – not just by refusing to disclose their basic data but by discrediting and freezing out any scientific journal which dares to publish their critics’ work.

    • Kloko Loko says:

@John To much fake youtube videos, flat earth and moon landing hoax and titanic hoax ?

    • John says:

During the Jurassic Period (age of dinosaurs) world concentration of carbon dioxide was 5 times more than today. The Sun’s activity, indicated by sunspots, determines most of the temperature of the earth.

Saving the Earth Irony – The Earth creating the COVID-19 does not seem to be rewarding all those fighting to save the Earth. The Earth does not seem to care about humans (or dinosaurs).

    • John says:

The Sun is entering a period of “solar minimum”, displayed by sunspot activity, that could cause temperatures to plummet by up to 2C over 20 years, according to NASA. The last solar minimum period was known as the “Dalton Minimum,” between 1790 and 1830 that led to a severe global prolonged cold snap and mini ice age.
