In South Africa, the army has been deployed to Cape Town, as what’s being described as a “taxi war” continues to escalate. Dozens of people have been killed over the past few months, with rival taxi associations battling it out for ownership of a hotly contested route. Authorities have now closed the route, in a bid to restore calm. But thousands of commuters are bearing the brunt of the closure. Two international airports in the Chinese city of Shanghai have cancelled all flights and authorities banned outdoor activities as Typhoon In-Fa lashed eastern China with high winds and heavy rains. In-Fa landed in the Putuo district of the city of Zhoushan, a major port in the eastern province of Zhejiang, at 12:30pm (04:30 GMT) on Sunday, state broadcaster CCTV said, citing the China Meteorological Administration. Tens of thousands of people in several European countries, including Greece, France and Italy, have protested against anti-COVID measures. At least 12 people have been killed in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou, as severe flooding sweeps China’s central province of Henan. Tens of thousands are also forced to evacuate their homes after three days of heavy rainfall, which was close to the annual average rainfall. The army has warned one of the region’s stricken dams may collapse at any time, risking the lives of about seven million people. Increased urbanisation and climate change have worsened the effect of floods in recent years. Rescue teams in Germany are continuing the search for more victims of last week’s devastating floods. Almost 200 people have been confirmed dead in Germany and neighbouring countries. An army of volunteers has been helping German residents who were badly hit by the disaster.
