The Spy in Your Phone | Al Jazeera World

In mid-2020, a mobile phone belonging to an Al Jazeera Arabic investigative team was hacked. Over the next few months, reporter Tamer Almisshal and the Canadian research group Citizen Lab investigated Pegasus, the sophisticated spyware used. Pegasus is manufactured by an Israeli technology company called the NSO Group and is among the most advanced spyware in the world. It can access and infiltrate a smartphone without the owner clicking a link, opening an email or even answering their phone – meaning it can go undetected. This investigation exposes how Pegasus works, how governments like Saudi Arabia and the UAE have bought the hugely expensive spyware and how it has been […]

Saudi Arabia opens its borders with Qatar on eve of Gulf summit

0 Saudi Arabia is opening its land border to Qatar, a move that could lead to a resolution of the three-and-a-half-year diplomatic crisis that led to the blockade of the tiny Gulf state. The announcement on Monday came on the eve of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt imposed a diplomatic, trade and travel boycott on Qatar in June 2017, accusing Doha of supporting “terrorism” and having ties with Iran they said were too close. Qatar has repeatedly denied the allegations and said there was “no legitimate justification” for the severance of relations. Al Jazeera’s Jamal Elshayyal reports from Doha, Qatar. […]

Tigray conflict highlights border dispute between Ethiopia, Sudan

Sudan says it has played an important role in helping refugees from Ethiopia despite its own economic difficulties. But this crisis is not the only challenge posed by the conflict. The al-Fashaga triangle, where most of the refugees are being hosted, covers an area of about 250 square kilometres and it has around 600,000 acres of fertile land. Sudan says it is an integral part of its territory because it lies west of the line drawn by colonial Britain. But Ethiopia maintains an army presence there and Ethiopian farmers exploit large parts of the land. A joint committee has been trying for years, with little success, to demarcate a border. […]
