The UN Security Council has passed a resolution demanding an increase in aid deliveries to Palestinians in Gaza who the World Health Organization say are facing the risk of starvation. The resolution asks both Israel and Hamas to provide the safe and unhindered delivery of supplies but it did not call for a stop in the fighting. Al Jazeera’s Gabriel Elizondo reports from the UN. Israel is stepping up its military operations – air attacks striking deeper into Lebanon. Overnight, it targeted a site in the Iqlim al-Tuffah region approximately 20km (12 miles) from the border, an area where Hezbollah has military assets. That could have been in response to Hezbollah firing surface-to-air missiles that exploded close to Israeli helicopters flying in Israeli air space close to the border. Both sides are sending messages to each other – a form of deterrence, “If you hit us, we are able to hit you.” The frequency of the attacks has increased, but it is still largely confined to the border area. Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr has the […]

There is considerable pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, both internationally and domestically. Internationally, the US seeks a shift to less intense fighting, reiterated by multiple American officials. Domestically, pressure has increased from captive families and the “Bring Them Back Now” movement, escalating after three Israeli captives were killed in Gaza by the Israeli military. Egyptian officials suggest Israel is willing to pause fighting for a week in exchange for 40 captives, including women, children, and elderly men. Over 100 captives remain in Gaza. Talks in Cairo include representation from Palestinian Islamic Jihad. In Israeli society, there is cautious optimism for captive release, but no Israeli indication of willingness […]

Attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi militants on ships in the Red Sea are disrupting maritime trade and prompting U.S. efforts to build a coalition to deal with the threat, as freight firms reroute around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid the Suez Canal. The Houthi group said it launched a drone attack on two cargo vessels in the area on Mon-day, the latest in a series of missile and drone strikes on shipping which it says are a response to Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip. Myles B. Caggins, a retired US Army Colonel and a senior fellow at the New Lines Institute who served as a spokesman for […]
The Houthis began in the 1990’s as a moderate theological movement of the Zaydis, a Shia minority group. Fighting corruption was one of their main aims. The 2003 US invasion of Iraq was a turning point. Analysts believe the war transformed the Houthis into a resistance group with deep anti-American sentiments. In 2015, Houthi fighters seized Yemen’s capital Sanaa. It triggered more than nine years of war between the Saudi-led coalition, which backs the internationally recognised government, and the Houthis, supported by Iran. On October the 31st, the Houthis entered the war in Gaza, firing drones and missiles at Israel. And earlier this month, the Houthis said they would target […]
