South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv as part of an African peace mission. Ramaphosa and three other African leaders are expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. They’ll then travel to Russia for talks with President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on Saturday. It follows a visit to Poland on Thursday where he held talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda. Refugees and aid groups say the fighting in Darfur is less about the battle between the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces than it is an existential war between communities in the region. Masalit leaders report that militias are targeting their tribe, in particular, and some refugees are describing the persecution in el-Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, as a genocide.
