In the last few hours, Israel has intensified its shelling on the eastern side of Gaza City. Reports have emerged this morning of Israeli tanks attempting to move deeper into Gaza City, indicating a significant Israeli determination to cross from the east to the west of Gaza City in an effort to gain control of the coastal line. Despite the slow pace of their advance, they faced strong resistance from Palestinian fighters. Hamas’s al-Qassam Brigades has released two captives from Gaza after Qatari and Egyptian mediation, spokesman Abu Obaida says. The two captives are Nurit Yitzhak and Yocheved Levschitz, al-Qassam Brigades said in a statement on Telegram. Hamas’s Qassam Brigades has released a video appearing to show the release of a female hostage and two children. The footage aired on Al Jazeera on Wednesday night was shot from a distance, showing the unidentified woman and the children from behind. The men, presumably Hamas fighters, are seen walking away after leaving them in an open area near a fence, which could be the frontier between Israel and Gaza. It is unclear when the video was shot. The Israeli authorities are yet to comment on the video. In Lebanon, fears are growing of war with Israel as hundreds of residents near the border are already sheltering or fleeing cross-border attacks. Lebanon’s population of 6 million may be “used to” war, as one Beirut resident told Al Jazeera, but the escalating conflict comes as the country is still recovering from recent economic turmoil. According to Hezbollah, three of the Lebanese Shia group’s members were killed by Israeli shelling on Monday.
