China’s birth rate drops to record low

New figures from China show the population is in decline for the first time in more than sixty years. The national birth rate hit a record low – 6.77 births per 1,000 people. If these trends continue, a shrinking number of workers will have to support a growing number of retirees. Labour shortages and a smaller tax base could majorly impact the economy. Economists say strict Covid-19 rules are partly to blame. They expect a low birth rate and a rapidly ageing population to have far-reaching effects. The latest data comes as government implores people to have more children after decades of doing the opposite. Al Jazeera’s Katrina Yu reports […]

Why is the cocoa industry still using child workers in Ghana?

Hundreds of thousands of children in West Africa are working in hazardous conditions on cocoa farms, despite international campaigns against child labour. Many have little or no access to education. Farmers say attempts by Western cocoa buyers to force prices down are keeping hundreds of thousands of children out of school and condemning them to a life of poverty. And they argue that only higher prices and better education can improve the lives of children. Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris reports from Hiampeanika in western Ghana. Croatia adopts euro, enters borderless Europe club on New Year

Croatia has switched to the euro and entered Europe’s passport-free zone – two important milestones for the country after joining the European Union (EU) nearly a decade ago. At midnight on Sunday, the Balkan nation bid farewell to its kuna currency and became the 20th member of the eurozone. It is now the 27th nation in the Schengen zone, the world’s largest passport-free travel area, which enables more than 400 million people to move freely around its members. “It is the season of new beginnings. And there is no place in Europe where this is more true than here in Croatia,” tweeted EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, as she […]

UK nurses stage second strike for inflation-busting pay

United Kingdom nurses have staged a second unprecedented strike amid an increasingly acrimonious fight with the government for better wages. Up to 100,000 members of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are holding the latest one-day stoppage on Tuesday after walking out last Thursday for the first time in the trade union’s 106-year history. They are demanding an inflation-busting pay increase to make up for years of real-terms salary cuts, but the government insists recession-hit Britain cannot afford anything above a 4-5 percent rise.
