Greek firefighters battle ‘raging’ forest fire near Athens

A blaze on the island of Evia is one of more than 100 burning across Greece. A wildfire that tore through a forest on the outskirts of the capital, Athens, has now receded – but has destroyed homes and businesses. The capital is now blanketed in a thick layer of smoke, and residents have been told to stay inside to protect themselves from pollution. The country is facing its most severe heatwave in 30 years – with a risk of more fires to come.
