One-quarter of central African rainforest could be gone by 2050

Rainforests in central Africa are rapidly disappearing due to logging and mining. It is one of the issues on the agenda at the One Forest Summit, under way in Gabon. The timber from these rainforests, now used to make furniture for people in wealthier countries, was once part of what has been called the planet’s “other lung” and a precious natural barrier to climate change. Israeli police fire stun grenades on pro-judiciary protests

Israeli police have fired stun grenades in Tel Aviv as scuffles broke out across the country amid a “day of disruption” protest as lawmakers ploughed ahead with judicial changes that opponents see as a threat to democracy. “Israel is not a dictatorship, Israel is not Hungary,” protesters blocking the main highway from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem shouted on Wednesday, waving blue and white Israeli flags. Engineers count cost of rebuilding in quake-hit, war-weary Syria

Engineers have been painstakingly assessing the safety of buildings in northwestern Syria, which was devastated by earthquakes this month after years of conflict and bombardments that had already destroyed homes and hospitals. Since the first earthquake struck the Turkey-Syria border region on February 6, hundreds of families in Idlib have been sheltering on agricultural land. Their homes were either flattened or so damaged that they were rendered uninhabitable. The Syrian Engineers Association in Idlib is working with the local administration to check buildings that are still standing after the earthquakes and thousands of powerful aftershocks. Senior Russian diplomat to the UN accuses Western countries, without providing evidence, of “cowboy” methods and “arm twisting” after 141 countries backed a UN General Assembly resolution demanding Moscow withdraw its troops from Ukraine.
