La Palma volcano destroys hundreds of homes, displaces thousands

More than 6,000 people have now been forced from their homes in La Palma, one of the Spanish Canary Islands. Parts of the area have been engulfed in lava from a volcano which erupted on Sunday. Many people lost their homes, and there is anger after a minister appeared to encourage so-called disaster tourists to visit. Thousands evacuated after volcano erupts on Spain’s Canary Island

Thousands of people have been told to leave their homes, after a volcanic eruption on the Spanish Canary Islands. The eruption followed a week of increasing seismic activity on the island of La Palma. With a population of 85,000, La Palma is one of the eight volcanic islands in Spain’s Canary Islands archipelago off Africa’s western coast. At their nearest point, the islands are 100km (60 miles) from Morocco. The lava’s slow advance has already consumed entire buildings and authorities are still unsure of the lava’s future path. Aid organisations are warning of an unfolding crisis on West Africa’s Atlantic coast, with a record number of migrants trying to make it to Europe.
