New START Treaty suspension raising fears of a renewed arms race

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Tuesday that Russia would suspend participation in the New START Treaty, the last central pillar of post-Cold War nuclear arms control between Moscow and Washington, which limits their strategic nuclear arsenals. Signed in 2010, the New START Treaty caps the number of strategic nuclear warheads that the United States and Russia may deploy and the deployment of land- and submarine-based missiles and bombers to deliver them.
