The largest dam removal operation in US history is due to begin in California.
It is part of a wider trend with almost 60 dams torn down in the past two decades.
Now, after decades of negotiation and bureaucratic delay, the Iron Gate Dam is going to be torn down. The process will take several years and will be the largest dam removal in US history.
This latest operation is not just about the environment.

@Steve Rhodes Videos okay groomer
Reduce ocean fishing is the answer .
Too bad indians
They really need the water…and power…too bad….its too late for.salmon…their ocean life if what is.DESTROYED …not the river so much
They have way for fish to go up stream better build a different dam
over fishing is the main problem.
Instead of installing fish ways that have been shown to work?
The 4 dams were obsolete, needed extensive upgrades after 50 plus years, and didn’t produce enough hydroelectric power to justify the required work. Just cheaper to eliminate these dams rather then modify them.
@William Lloyd absolutely
Mankind is so cruel
Wow this is amazing news
muh Ancestors muh tribe, are you American or not?
I hope they get the Salmon back!
stop over fishing them and it wouldn’t be a problem, but instead these uneducated clowns are going to make California’s 3 biggest problems much worse.
They won’t because the river will dry up during normal dry seasons.. the river will either go underground dry up completely. Or there will not be enough water in order for it to flow and it will be too warm for salmon to use
Will the new generation of salmon even know to go further up river?
Dams are outdated, and the reservoirs will be empty soon with all this drought. We need to go solar!
@BWL Justus can all be recycled
@Vanilla macaron less than 40% of the materials in them can be recycled ans they release toxic gassesduring recycling, the rest is waste.
yes let’s use a inefficient power source that is much worse for the environment.
Solar doesn’t provide a consist supply of electricity, it’s costly and inefficient, doesn’t work well with the current grid, it’s not enviro friendly like people are falsely told AND solar doesn’t provide water…you big derp…
@TheGreatAynRand he’s clearly a libtard so…ya ..
that’s a dam big removal
Fighting 7.5% inflation (more like 15%) with a 1% Fed funds interest rate is like stopping a forest fire with a bucket of water. Folks prepare accordingly. Make investment in other not to depend on the government for funds
Through WhatsApp
Thank you guys. For the info, you need to make your investment versatile, I invest in stocks, forex, Gold etc. I’m gonna sell some stocks, so I can invest good capital in crypto with Mr IVAN PETERSON
He really helped I and my family during the first hit of the pandemic here in Australia 🇦🇺.
I’m a long term investor. I withdrew my profits of over $108,000 during the pandemic.
This is the kind of information that we don’t get from most Youtubers I will get in touch with him right now.
This great news and hopefully the beginning of a trend to remove more dams. (I understand more dam removals are planned in California.) Hydro is not as ‘green’ as it seems at first blush and we have an obligation (and really existential need) to correct the mistakes of the past based on our improved understanding of the unintended consequences.
Species restoration has shown unexpected benefits (think wolves in Yellowstone). Salmon in the West and Eels in the East will benefit from dam removal as will the water ways in their historic ranges. Both species spend a large part of their life cycle in salt water.
@Bringette Awnn get a 🧠 brain
@Jack Trout “I remember hearing”…so you base your facts on hearsay? Algal blooms are from fertilizer getting in water more than anything…now it’ll just be concentrated more in the delta…the river will dry up or be too warm for salmon during the summer/fall months, flooding will ensue during the winter….less water and electricity for CA…all at tax payer expense to tear down the dam and nothing good will come of it in the long run…
@Spirit Talk: Ghostly Encounters by Ryan Privee I’m on the river, you can see the algae it’s not good. The salmon are declining. That’s what I’ve witnessed guiding on it for 30 years.
@Quiddiey You haven’t got the slightest clue what you are talking about. The dam stops water flow, dramatically increasing temperature, algae blooms and sedimentation. Salmon needs free flowing rivers, not a mucky warm pond ya dummy
YOU are the typical ignorant bliss that lives in the minds of most liberals here CALI!Absolute stupidity!
Algazera needs to talk about Ecosia they are a search engine that plants tress
Dont let any river meet the ocean. Save fresh water from being saline. Build more dams.
A rare morsel of hope for environmentalists
But how will you ever recharge your electric car?
@Jeff Breshears fossil fuels like they already do
More like eco terrorists…
@The Truth a Right… what?
Which environmentalists? Replacing hydro-electric with fossil fuel burning will not help climate change.
Salmon are cold water fish and need river and ocean water temps below 68 degrees to survive. Bust up the dams! Bust them up!
so where will electricity come from?
@Rob Reynolds And destroying the energy production totally is better then installing a better generator?
@Hunterkirk A lot of power is coming from solar farms and household rooftop panels that weren’t there when the dam was built.
@Rob Reynolds it’s sad that you actually believe that propaganda.
@Vanilla macaron most comes from hydro electric and we shouldn’t be replacing it with a inefficient source of power that is worse for the environment.
@Vanilla macaron lol…right…*rolls eyes*
Y’all doing everything but accepting the fact that the Earth is turning on y’all lol
Exactly!!! Thank You🤗
@Noniboo u welcome 😁
lets put sardines in there instead!
No way… fishing guide Jack Trout?
Finally some good news in this sick world.
luckily there is no drought or electric generation shortages
Ikr…libtards, out of staters and foreigners won’t get your sarcasm…
E see w2
It’s great. Glad for countries, where people take care of a nature
So California is running out of both water and power….. hey salmon are harmed lets remove a dam the provides both! I must feel good to be both thirsty and in the dark roasting knowing that Salmon are doing well.
Large dams actually cause more drought because it slows down the flow of water allowing more water to evaporate as it bakes in the sun. Also the heavy weight of the water pushes water out of river and into the soil. 100 (1) foot dams store more water and provide significantly more water to the people of the land than 1 (100) foot dam. We have more large dams than ever but more drought than ever. Many small dams of 4 inches provide even more water than 1 foot dams and also allow fish to swim upriver which brings nutrients upstream from the ocean and back into our forests. Forests hold more water and slowly release it back into the rivers decreasing the drought —> flood cycle.
@Heather Lova SO there never was a reason for a dam in the first place. Got it.
Great great news 👍
Stupid stupid comment
Wow, I hope the Salmon species’s reappear! Knock that sucker down like yesterday!
A modern day environmentalist propaganda, it’s so phoney the people just eat it up. Multiple dams are on the Klamath, the ROI over the course of 120+ years has been incredibly lucrative $$$ for a small select few, the dams need to be overhauled and rebuilt due to old age, but now they’re the heros because now they care for the natives and salmon. 👏🍿
Runnin out of drinkin water , but who needs water in a drought
Crazy environmentalists are going to screw up something else in California. Like they haven’t done enough damage already.
God I can’t wait for the first catastrophic flood!!! good job California 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
Evil speaks.
No wonder we have drought
That’s not it. God, do you even know about water tables?
@Deborah Foster groundwater is replenished more WITH dams than without.., they also reduce mass flooding which used to happen in CA before dams…my God all your comments are beyond ignorant and scream libtard!!
California is in no need of water it’ll definitely help if they let more run out to sea so funny they are applying water restrictions while they simultaneously plan this
@Shawn Beaty yes it is stupid don’t vote Democrat if you care about farmers or water conservation
Well boy we better prepare for worse blackouts, wildfires and water shortages in the future.
@BRANDON HOLLAND you should tell LA and San Francisco to not to vote democrat. Democratic party here has a supermajority because of gerrymandering. They’ve drawn voting district lines in such a way that allow LA and San Francisco to dictate all of California’s policies. All you have to do is run enough political ads in LA and San Francisco and you will pretty much pass anything..
You know that pure democracy garbage that Democrats like to harp on and socialist leftists…
Great more water shortages and power. Klamath water storage also irrigates farm land. Hmmm let’s make it more difficult to grow food in CA.
Ikr…libtards SMH
Hmm. I feel like there are methods, such as water stairs, that could be used alongside the dam to allow the salmon to swim up-river while maintaining a source of green electricity.
I live near these Dams, the salmon has always ran up this river up to the Dam. A fish latter can be installed at a lower cost than removing these Dams. Also what there not telling you. Is that you remove these Dams. The Klamath does not flow enough water during droughts . This means the water will be to worm and shallow causing salmon to Die. So which is worse. Keeping Dams and adding fish latters. Or kill the fish because water is to low and worm.
@L Beck then you should have voted for more Republicans in the midterms probably
@Jack Trout thank you for adding some truth to this
@Allen Williams too bad the state of Jefferson didn’t work for you.
Allen i live off camp creek rd next to irongate resivoir,it will lower property values and endanger all of us when the next fire comes through.with the dought condition in climate change here it will be absolute stupidity to take these damns out when, they could do what you propose for a lot less.California governments (demcrates)are WACK!
@steven larson whatever bro, I’m listening to the scientists rather than opinions of the MAGA crowd.
This is typical California garbage… 39million people in a drought, not one new reservoir built in 20 years, not one new power plant… Let’s tear down a reservoir for some salmon and a handful of people. Let’s spend 120billion on a train from Fresno to Modesto. Are we all crazy?????
@Vanilla macaron its amazing that you think a inefficient technology that is worse for the environment is a better choice.
YES
Fresno to Merced, it doesn’t even go to Modesto lol
Liberals are (crazy)
@The Truth a dust bunnies fascinate Fiona
I just wanna know can I get a job I’m American I just wanna work
Live on a res, say you’re a 16th native and have diabetes because your fat @ss can’t fish salmon and you’ll get plenty of EBT cards for McDonald’s…
California people planning self extinction. That should help the planet and the salmon!
Great news! Destroy more California dams. Central Valley has been destroyed and beyond repair. To much agriculture, not sustainable.
Idiot…
Hey Rob… A group of otters is a “Raft”, not a “Bevy”…
No one from Southern California should be applauding this! Southern California rapes Northern California of its water and uses over twenty percent of the California’s power to push the water over the Mountains to get it there. Start Desalinating your water instead of bleeding the Surrounding areas and States dry. We could even refill the Lakes and Marshes that Southern California has already sucked dry if they would.
But how do we know the salmon will return in the numbers of yesteryear?
I thought California needs more dams? I thought there was a drought! Crazy tree huggers
Why didnt they build a fish ladder!
Humans have really messed up nature! This dam is proof. I wish men would have left it alone!
Great story, Aljazeera. Thank you for reporting this good news.
Maybe in your twisted mind. Kill off some humans instead? Be careful what you wish for. California can’t supply enough electric power from their solar and wind machines 24/7. Is it a reservoir too? Blood will be on all of you freaks hands.
Bad news….. for thirst in CA
Bad news for most Californians is more like it…drought, PG&E outages, flooding now that the dam is gone…I hope future fires and flooding doesn’t destroy the homes of these local advocates who think this is a good idea…or blackouts…lack of water for drinking and growing food…
looks like another self inflicted wound for california and newsome.
Yeah in a place where we need more water for California, we start removing a dam without thinking of making additional planning for dams/reservoirs in the lower areas where it doesnt affect the salmon.
You don’t know anything about this area. Norcal is water rich, the places that need the water are 800 miles away.
You act like youre the only species on earth, like everyone doesn’t need other species to exist. Or maybe it’s because it will help Native peoples.
Oh look, another Republican who doesn’t understand how many dams California already has.
@Tyson sorry just noticed your reply, the lower areas down south should have a chain of dams not north. But even then it will never get done. well aware of norcal water due to living in Clearlake for the last 12years.
@Deborah Foster lol that’s funny, ish happens might aswell push for desalination plants at this point. My apologies for not replying just noticed the replys
What a load of malarkey. These dams provide water to keep the river flowing when dry summers, and drought conditions leave them nearly dry.
Stupid to removal an asset that benefits the environment. The stored water has helped supply water to fight fires that could have destroyed entire towns and forest lands.
What was also incredibly abundant were the Redwood trees. The Native Americans had to murdered off along with the Salmon. The Salmon and wood for profit of course. The killing? Just something to do for the white man.
Thank the over population there her ancestors had it right until guess who showed up settlers from the east more n more till the land just can’t take no more
Calfornia is in constant shortage of fresh water , so it makes sense to let all that fresh water pour out into the ocean
@A’sCaGarden Do tell Me. Science? Where did that obvious, common sense suggestion go wrong.? Go ahead explain to us morons what the science says!.. please…. Something tells he won’t and can’t. Just another virtue signaler parroting someone so that’s what
To libtards and obese natives with diabetes on the res it does…
@A’sCaGarden Try common sense…you are a deluded liberal lemming…
@A’sCaGarden I guess you’ve
never heard of gravity.
@Raul Beck you can’t just stop the river buddy. It has other negative effects.
I’m sorry but the native people’s rely on this? In 2022? What about the 200 different tribes along the Colorado river, from the headwaters down to The gulf? When do they get to be “Restored” . California and the whole Southwestern U.S is turning into a dessert. We’ve used these resources up since the 1950’s.
Trout? Jack Trout? There’s no way….
California is worried more about the fish then people 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. California has no water it makes perfect sense to to waste billions of tax dollars to make sure there is less water in this state . Why didn’t I think of this
Liberals don’t think, they feel…and if you don’t agree, you’re racist…hence the “you don’t support mixed race 10% NA Indian obese natives with diabetes who can’t go to Walmart and get salmon with their EBT cards”…
So knock dam down..to have more salmon but loose electricity in a state with black outs! lol now you see how bad California is ran by liberals
Great news! The 4 best renewables are solar wind geothermal and tidal.
Nuclear n hydropower have too many downsides. Let’s honor the natives
Solar works daytimes. Wind works once in a while. Both are rarely sited conveniently and will require huge upgrades to transmission infrastructure. I’ll take the small downsides of nuclear.
@Rusty LugNut that’s why we’re investing in solar batteries and wind works enough especially with new off shore and the combo of geothermal and tidal it’s enough. Nuclear pollutes for thousands of yrs
That’s not true at all…solar and wind are costly and ineffective as solar only works during sun days/day time and wind when it actually is windy (it also kills birds)…then you have the toxic mining for making solar panels…where is tidal energy generation going on in CA?? That isn’t happening. None of these works well with the current electrical grid…it’s costly which is why the state/fed govt has to subsidize it… Are you seriously that ignorant you think nuclear pollutes but not solar/wind/electric cars??? All the toxic mineral mining for the batteries, they also have to be replaced after so many years and fossil fuels are still used to generate electricity to charge those Tesla’s…. Many wind turbines are being torn down in CA because they aren’t cost effective. It’s not “enough”—enough for whom?? We need hydroelectric power. We need the water. The salmon are not going to survive in the river during droughts with low, warm water levels. Liberals are deluded…
@Rusty LugNut also just look at chernobyl and 3 mile Island and Fukushima
That’s a lot of dam work
I don’t get it…the dam bypass ladders were not designed correctly to accommodate the salmon population? And / or too much water is being diverted for domestic use?
It would be interesting to see a comparison between a large number of the new highly efficient and much more unobtrusive small flow generators that don’t require a change in the dynamic of the river like a dam does!
Good point. And most of California is turning into the Arabian desert, so send that water south. Send that power south too. With lake Powell and Meade drying up the power and water is needed.
CA wisely replacing hydro and nuclear power with high priced foil fuels during an man made global oil and gas shortage.
1000 CFS is not going to run much. The problem is the water, it only generated 1000 kilowatts of power per hour, that why Warren Buffet and his cronies gave it up. (Pacific Power)
@Jack Trout not understanding your foray into pre nuclear boondoggles.
@Mr Baab except they’re not
Democrats are purposely making the drought worse and using excuses like this to make California unlivable
I guess everybody will be charging their Tesla’s with salmon once they remove the power of generating stations.
This is bullshit
Correcting this sammon spawn is the whole key to indigenous populations and homeless…..thanks GOD…..or government hiking Ng prices to increase TAX base because they can’t raise tax rates any higher..JOE SMO.
The salmon are fleeing cali along with decent people trying to escape the communist dictators. They probably went to florida or texas
India must also DISMANTLE Bhakhra, and Pong Dams as they were built to loot water from Punjab and give it freely to Rajasthan. We’d rather have the water to ourselves than have it looted to Hindu fascists states.
Have fun trucking in water to drink.
They should built the hydro power so it could work with the salmon still being able to swim upstream But cutting them off completely shouldn’t have ever been done. Thankfully they’re removing the dam.
It couldn’t happen fast enough.
Fish cant spawn so I’m forced to eat McDonald’s, boo hoo ingun.
This makes no sense to be tearing down dams during an on going drought….go buy salmon in the store if that makes a difference in your diet. I’m sure there are other reasons why they’re getting diabetes…genetics, inactivity, eating fast food, alcohol, laziness sitting on the res mooching off the govt and tax payers perhaps…?
So basically Dam is blocking salmon to breed ? instead removing dam, the harchery , or a pathway to upstream to breed would be easier solution which I am not understanding the idea of destroying dam and losing its benefit.
Silted in of no use now
@Frank Groznik salmon can’t swim the distance behind the dam, they need the stream, very complicated
@Alan Mydland That’s why the dam needs to be removed
Live on a res, say you’re a 16th native and have diabetes because your fat @ss can’t fish salmon and you’ll get plenty of EBT cards for McDonald’s…oh and let’s tear down dams in a drought so we can have more PG&E outages and make Squanto, Pocahontas, Mr. Trout hippy and other eco-terrorist libtards happy…all at tax payers’ expense…
This year mm well bring on the explosives. 💥Boom boom
Dam be gone hurry it up
Where will this began.
California is facing a crisis in electrical generation and water. We’re moving a dam that can regulate the flow of water and supply electricity instead of just building fish ladders does not make any sense unless you’re trying to destroy California.
This water could be used to irrigate central valley, solving the draught. This is a very short sighted policy.
California could of built a desalination plant years ago, like Israel or Saudi Arabia, to help greatly with the water shortage. The radicals rather we die of thirst than “harm” the ocean. (Which is very debatable how much harm it’ll actually cause)
Science is great for somethings, but sometimes it is best to just leave nature alone without human intervention……..
Save the salmon but let the people rot.
I get saving nature as we should very important indeed.
I think people are very important too has buddy seen what’s happening in the world with the young youth not sure but it looks pretty bad if what I’m seeing on TV is true.
So say if the youth was in the salmons place which they are what then is happening too them in the future boy it’s going to be a pretty sickening thing to see later in life.
”60 dams torn down in the past two decades”…and here we are crying about droughts, rolling blackouts, out of control bush fires..
It’s so nice that I can get my American news from Al-Jazeera.
And since Al jazeera is one of the few news corporations not owned by a zionist you can trust that it isn’t fake news bent on destroying the US
Yeah it’s a good source
Dams cause diabetes… got it.
I love trout fishing and outdoors, beautiful lakes too. However, seems logical to retain water for human use… let it run to the ocean, then spend Billions to desalinate the wate?? I’m in NC, but I keep hearing about drought out West? Forest Gump “stupid is as…..”
There should never have been dams on any river anywhere that would kill off any species of fish that needed that stretch of river to survive, whenever check dams on streams above the spawning fish could have been erected at a higher cost to keep the flow steady enough to not need a dam, dams are a public nusince to the environment already known by the engineers that created them, if we think that the billions made from the ag culture is ever going away, it’s not. And if you think
The only people who deserve reparations are first nations people
You are wrong again, every person living in america deserves every bit of the respect the paid government can give to wright their wrongs.
will find a new love for the Klamath after the dams are gone
Need to build more dams but government is doing the opposite
And keep hearing about sea level going up and with now all this water going to ocean what do you think will happen
Idaho and cal need to keep dams for power that fish Can diy off
Stupid liberals… I hope all salmon will die in this river !!!!
That’s why the GOP is dying
I wonder how many cities will be abandoned if hoover dam being demolished😂
next year dam removal begins! can’t wait
klath will be incredible once the dams are gone, can’t wait to see it flowing free
Good thing we’re not running out of fossil fuel.
This has been a long time in coming.
First fished the Klamath in the 1970’s and watched it steadily decline.
Ther should be a huge celebration when the water flows freely again.
This is a completely ridiculous idea!! The Entire State is in a severe drought. And annual wildfires are burning MILLIONS of acres every year.. So now, why is letting all our water flow to the ocean somehow a reasonable idea.. it’s NOT!! If fish hatcheries can’t bring the salmon population back up, perhaps it’s the tribes netting all the fish?? Leave the damns!! Maybe work on the buffalo that used to flourish across the country that are practically extinct.. the salmon travel to where they prawned from to breed.. if no salmon have spawned that hight up on the river in over a hundred years, what makes you think they will travel there to breed once the damns are gone.. they won’t. Stupidity
0:27 says it all.
Ansesters? Indigenous native americans? There are non of those people living here anymore. Everyone lives in a home , gets food from the store and are provided for. There are homeless people living on the street more than there are native americans living on the land and providing the way they used to. Nobody today has ever owned slaves and nobody today has killed any Indians. We should all remember our history yes? We cant live in the past or change it. We also shouldn’t try and act like we are sorry for taking lands from people we had nothing to do about. Its 2022.9 get over yourselves
