Lebanon education: Teachers strike and economy threaten schools

Lebanon’s public schools have restarted but their classes have not. Teachers are still on strike demanding better pay. The education sector has been affected by the country’s three year economic crisis. The United Nations says 16 percent of children have dropped out of school and officials say without millions of dollars in aid, the academic year is at risk. More than 30 people killed in mass shooting in Thailand: Police

More than 30 people have been killed in a mass shooting at a children’s day-care centre in a northeastern province of Thailand, a police spokesperson said. Victims included both children and adults, police said in a statement on Thursday, adding that the gunman was an ex-police officer and a manhunt was underway. The prime minister has alerted all agencies to take action and apprehend the culprit, a government spokesperson said. Mass shootings are rare in Thailand but in 2020, a soldier angry over a property deal killed at least 29 people and wounded 57 in a rampage that spanned four locations. Ukraine war: EU divided on welcoming Russian military deserters

While some European countries like Finland have closed their borders for Russian tourists, others like Germany are offering those who refuse to fight in the Ukraine war, the chance to apply for asylum. Ukrainian forces advance southward, mirroring success in the east

Ukrainian forces achieved their biggest breakthrough in the country’s south since Russia invaded, pushing across Moscow’s defence lines on Monday and advancing along the Dnieper River, recapturing a number of villages along the way and threatening enemy supply lines. Ukraine’s advance targets supply lines for as many as 25,000 Russian troops on the west bank of the Dnieper. Ukraine has already destroyed the main bridges, forcing Russian forces to use makeshift crossings. A substantial advance downriver could cut them off entirely.
