The United States is sending 2,000 additional soldiers to Europe and repositioning another 1,000 from Germany to Romania to ensure the “robust defence” of European NATO members, the Pentagon has said, amid the ongoing impasse between Russia and Ukraine. US Department of Defense spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Wednesday that the troop deployment would take place in the coming days. The United States is planning to designate Qatar as a major non-NATO ally, President Joe Biden has told Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, a move that would formally upgrade the partnership between Doha and Washington. During a meeting with Sheikh Tamim at the White House on Monday, Biden called Qatar a “good friend and reliable partner”. “I’m notifying Congress that I will designate Qatar as a major non-NATO ally to reflect the importance of our relationship; I think it’s long overdue,” Biden said from the Oval Office. A powerful winter storm packing heavy snow and high winds has pummeled the United States East Coast, forcing the cancellation of thousands of flights as severe weather alerts were sounded across the region of nearly 70 million people. A United States jury found Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes guilty of conspiring to defraud investors in the blood-testing startup. Holmes was convicted Monday on four of 11 counts. She was acquitted on four counts, and the jury could not reach a decision on three counts. Prosecutors said Holmes, 37, swindled private investors between 2010 and 2015 by convincing them that Theranos’s small machines could run a range of tests with a few drops of blood from a finger prick. Holmes was also charged with misleading patients about the tests’ accuracy. Holmes rose to Silicon Valley fame after founding Theranos in 2003. Hurricane Ida has made landfall as one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the United States. The Category-4 storm brought fierce winds, torrential downpours and knocked out power to New Orleans in Louisiana – but has since weakened. Palestine’s ambassador to the United Nations Riyad Mansour says the international community has an “immediate responsibility” to bring about a ceasefire with Israel. The United States, a close ally of Israel, has for the third time this week reportedly blocked the UN Security Council’s (UNSC) statements condemning Israel’s actions and calls for a ceasefire. The latest UNSC meeting ended without reaching any consensus.
